Commissioner for a day thread! What changes would you make in the NBA if you were commish?
Commissioner for a day. That is you. You are asked to come up with ways to better the NBA as it is. Here are some questions to help you get an idea of how you may want to go about improving the overall NBA as we know it now:
What rules and regulations would you change/remove/add?
How would you handle player conduct both on and off the court?
What would you do about the offiating to help reduce critisism?
How would you change free agent policies?
What would you do to improve the NBA draft overall?
I know there are more questions to be asked/answered so go ahead and do both in a comment.

Technicals for Flopping
1 shot plus the ball.
by Texas08 on Sep 1, 2010 1:35 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
That would be good if
there was a sure way to tell if a player really flopped or not. Maybe review the call in question and administer a fine to the player.
GO ROCKETS, GO TEXANS, GO ASTROS (EVEN THOUGH THEY SUCK)!!!
it would take too much time
Games used to be finished within 2 hours, now its 2.5+. I wish we could replay every play, the Rockets would have a much better record last year IMO.

i meant the league office
should review the plays after the game or the end of the week

Rec'ed
The refs should be good enough to be able to tell when a player flops.
He thought the wind generated by his bat would carry the ball out of the park. --Braves fan comments on Ryan Howard's 0-7, 5K night vs HOU

I would make sure
the referees have their own stats. For example the league should show how many fouls and techs are called by each ref. That way if there are any biases or favoritisms they would be exposed. Also refs should be fined if they make past a certain amount of errors each game.

make them a completely separate legal entity and have them audited by PWC or something
for what you said before (trends etc…) I want to see data on fouls called on “stars” vs other players etc…
On discipline:
Any “serious” crime, like being caught with guns, violence, drug charges etc…you are out for the 12 months, first offense. I just think that one of the biggest cancers on the NBA is that people who would otherwise watch the NBA just see many of the players as adolecence spoiled thugs (ie Denver) and don’t want to watch them. Clean up the BS crap in the league and more people may watch. Did this crap happen in the 80’s in Magic/Bird years? I don’t remember it happening them.
I am actually for a hard cap, no luxury tax possilbilty, make teams build a team with limited resources. If players want to take a salary cut to play with their friends fine, but they will pay for it. I think all of us want to watch COMPTETITIVE games, not blow outs, so allowing any team to double or triple the payroll to win it all I think is stupid. Yes lots of people will want to see Miami play this coming season (unless they come out and suck of course) but I still think the whole league is more competitive if everyone is capped at the same salary. You can make it a high cap to pay the Kobe’s of the world their 20+MM a year.
I don’t get the fact that there is a lottery. The worst team should have the top pick…why they could potentially fall to 3 or something due to the lottery balls seems silly. There may be a reason for this that I am not aware of but it seems if you really want ot try to keep teams as easy as possible you just let the worst get the top picks etc…
of course you will always have your Kahn/TWolves that continue to suck no matter how many good picks they get, but at least it makes it the most competitive.
Lottery is to keep games competitive
Otherwise teams would just tank to win the lottery and you have a race to see who can lose the most games.
I think the lottery is one of the better ideas around.
Yeah, I wanna see ref stats as well.
Not sure you could fine them based on the stats alone though, would be kinda hard to theorize. I think there has to be blatantly bad or biased officiating to warrant a fine. Regardless, there definitely needs to be some new rules to regulate the officiating. It gets worse every season it seems.
That, sir
is a brilliant idea if I’ve ever heard one.
"If I had to pick a center [for an all-time best team], I would take Olajuwon. That leaves out Shaq, Patrick Ewing. It leaves out Wilt Chamberlain. It leaves out a lot of people. And the reason I would take Olajuwon is very simple: he is so versatile because of what he can give you from that position. It's not just his scoring, not just his rebounding or not just his blocked shots. People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court. For all facets of the game, I have to give it to him." -Michael Jordan

I would...
1. fire all the refs and only rehire those who have been audited and checked out to be completely un-biased
2. push for a Hard-Cap without Lux Tax (make the cap higher)
3. fine LeBron for making a spectacle of his former team on national television
4. fine Chris Bosh for His comments on how he toyed with fans and doesn’t care about the sport
5. fine the Miami trio for conspiracy with a possibility of suspension
6. fine Chris Paul for his comments at Melo’s wedding
7. 10% of year’s salary fine for any player who publicly demands a trade
8. Suspension for disorderly conduct….for instance, Melo should be suspended for half the season for his twitter antics
1st offense is half a year or a full year based on the circumstances
2nd offense is two year suspension, 3rd is 3, etc…
9. fine officials if they are audited and found to have committed more than 5 errors in 2 games
10. fire any officials caught making errors consistently
ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!
i can’t agree with the stuff about reducing the freedom of speech of the players.

I just made a separate post inspired by this one. I reccomend getting rid of the Salary Cap and NBA Draft. I didn’t want to hijack this thread with my super long analysis.

First order of business...
More Pyrotechnics, more entertainment, more kick ass bands to play at half time.
We’re gonna make every game like it was the all-star game.
Players will have more freedom with how they choose to personalize their on-court appearance to enhance their “image”, ex. custom painted face masks will be allowed, where players can personalize it however they want with sponsor names or just something crazy like a wolf or chupacabra face.
Better Nachos, no industrial cheese shall enter concessions at any arena, just real gourmet food. Organic fruit and vegatables will be pushed as well.
Low output Vu Vu Zelas will be allowed into play off series and any Miami Heat game.
Major shake up and crack-down on NBA officiating.
Entire league is wiped clean of previous officials.
Totally re-staffed and retrained for the new officiating system…
High tech officiating based on 3D imaging camera systems and sophisticated foul detection technology, manned by a team of 7 officials ( 3 on the floor, and 4 in the skybox accompanied by a technician) all working together to ensure the right call is made EVERYTIME. There will be a new system of accountability for bad referees and rewards/bonuses for good ones.
When a referee commits to a call, particularly when overriding a call, they have to be mic’d and converse openly in front of the spectators, then openly explain to the spectators what they decided aloud at center court.
After that…
I would require 24/7 security at an undisclosed location in order to ensure that all the game fixers that just lost their nut will have a difficult time trying to assassinate me.

Thats going to cost waay to much.
And wont make the game more exciting.
Your comment inspires little faith...
so, you will not be allowed into any games while I’m commissioner.

There are a lot of things I would do differently
but since I’ve been running around half the day and sitting in class the other half I’ll keep this brief and hopefully post something a bit more detailed tomorrow.
One thing I would do is make the first round of the playoffs 5 games again instead of 7. That would leave more room for an upset and the series would either be more entertaining or end more quickly and we could move on the the important rounds.
Also, move the camera men off the baseline. I mean really? They have to sit 2 feet from the action? I think we invented a little thing called the “zoom” for a reason. Why not use it instead of endangering the players?
Ban Dick Bavetta and Joey Crawford from officiating any and all basketball games.
Just a couple of the more practical things I would implement. If I feel like it I’ll try this again tomorrow.
Oh, and right before my “Commissioner for a Day” is over. I would appoint Shane Battier as the new Commissioner, effective in 5-7 years or whenever he retires, whichever comes first. (Wouldn’t want to see him out of that Rockets Red prematurely.)

+1 on Battier being in charge
I have faith in the guys smarts and ability to run things..but only after he helps us win two more rings
I think to be a good commissioner you have to fulfill a few requirements most people are not.
1) Increase profits.
2) Increase brand/viewership
3) increase profits.
4) Keep games interesting leading to increased brand and profits.
A good chunk of the owners last year lost money on their NBA team.
Increasing profit margins would allow us to get better owners who can perhaps spend a little extra.
My changes:
1) Hard Cap- increases parity. Allows a team like OKC or Portland with a smart Gm to have a bigger impact.
2) Create a Side Cap to allow owners to do little things like buy draft picks.
3) Create incentives for owners to spend on their teams. Teams like the clips with a terrible owner dont go anywhere and dont provide as much value.
4) Create a review booth that is constantly watching the camera and is watching out for fouls and auto reviews every foul and shot.
5) increase number of things that can be reviewed.
Overall I am perhaps one of the few people who is fairly satisfied by officiating. I think stars should be given star fouls. These guys are counted on to lead their team and should be given a little extra leway. There are some bad fouls called but for the most part these guys are pretty good. Would def have an ethics committee who Monitors officials’ monetary records to keep track of unusual spending.
6) Advertise more outside of just game times.
7) Create more basketball events. Tailgating is a huge part of why football is so popular. If you want to increase the popularity of basketball start some sort of equivalent
9) Increase the number of foreign basketball players. Whether this is through more outreach programs in other nations or otherwise. Yao has done more for the popularity of the sport than 99% of the guys out there. Imagine if we had a Dominant Indian/Middle Eastern/Vietnamese/ something asian on a team. There are several south americans on teams. Several Europeans. Many Africans. How many asians? 2 if that.
10) Provide incentives for players to come to events. LeBron at the slam dunk contest. Several guys to the olympics.
11) Make the all star weekend much much bigger. As was said above get bigger bands to play.
12) I Didnt have an 8 but you didnt notice did you?
13) You just went back and confirmed it.
14)
It seems like officiating is the #1 problem we have
I think if all refs were miced up each game we could better understand how to help them do their jobs. If we could here the conversations they have with players and the complaints we would have a template to go by.
GO ROCKETS, GO TEXANS, GO ASTROS (EVEN THOUGH THEY SUCK)!!!
Aside from the officiating
Which I have no hope for anymore
I’d like to see an arbitrtion process for players with long contract, during which it can be adjusted due to performance.
I kind of hate the franchise tag in football, but I think it’s totally applicable to LBJ last year.

My Commish Days...
1.) NBA Refs, as Batman said (Great idea), start tracking their calls and keeping stats on them.
2.) More chesty women, because I can.
3.) As said before, fine Lebron for his shenanigans with the whole “The Decision” garbage.
4.) Investigate the Miami Threetards for tampering, they deserve as much.
5.) Look at contracting the league, there’s no need for 30 teams per conference with some teams perennially bad and poor.
5.a.) Relocate one of the teams that would otherwise be contracted over to the NW Conference, back to Seattle. Oklahoma changes to the SW Division due to proximity and distributing the teams back around. Most likely New Orleans to Seattle, remove Memphis, Oklahoma to the SW Division. Contraction should be one team per division just for balance.
6.) Hard cap.
7.) Hardball with the NBA Player’s Association, they want high contracts with high years, they can go right ahead and get it but at the elimination of profit share and an obligation to divvy up their endorsement deals to help cover the cost to owners to give them those salaries.
8.) Clear Donaghy’s name, he provided info and actually was the only one who came out smelling legit on the whole thing.
9.) Harsher punishments for drug violations.
10.) Let teams play. None of this touch foul BS anymore. I want Artest out there able to muscle someone around, I don’t want touch fouls netting a team 20 free throws per game, it’s arbitrary and it’s BS.
I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.
Definitely #10
I want the ol’ school style of physical play back, especially for the Playoffs. The NBA is turning into the WNBA.
i dont know if this has already been stated, im too lazy to read all your comments
Give the stadium back to the fans! Its sad that all the bottom levels are so fucking expensive. What kinda shit is that? I sa)n first come first serve, except bottom middle. Ill understand if that’s SLIGHTY more expensive. But seriously, its sad that, for some teams, the bottom level is empty and the top level is full. I’m sick and tired of that’s BS. Stadiums are built so that fans can come and watch their favorite teams.
