Be Daryl Morey, Help me with an article!
I'm writing an article on my blog about a hypothetical NBA expansion team, and what it might look like. I've had a bit of trouble getting into contact with Rockets bloggers, so I've decided to ask you guys here.
If you were Daryl Morey, and an expansion draft was to happen at the conclusion of the upcoming season, which 8 players would you protect? You can only pick 8, and not of any of the Unrestricted Free Agents.
So the Players Eligible to be protected (and picked if they aren't protected) are as follows:
Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry, Brad Miller, Jordan Hill, Aaron Brooks, Patrick Patterson, Courtney Lee, Chase Budinger, and Jermaine Taylor.
Looking at that list as a fan who thinks he knows a bit about the NBA, my guess would be that the 8 protected would be Martin, Scola, Lowry, Hill, Brooks, Patterson, Lee and Budinger. That would leave Brad Miller and Jermaine Taylor available to be picked by the expansion team.
Does this sound right to you guys? Does anyone have a differing opinion?
Thanks again everyone, I can't wait for the real NBA season to start.

That sounds about right
Although Miller is important as Yaos backup, so its a toss up for me between him, Hill, or Patterson. I really like Jermaine but he would have to go.
W/out knowing how season turns out,kinda tough,but...
The Bobcats’ expansion draft included Charlotte being allowed only 66% of Salary Cap. Assuming you have something like that,I wouldn’t protect Kevin Martin or Brad Miller.
Three reasons for Martin:
1)He would take up over over 30% of your team’s cap. Seriously doubt any expansion team would do that. Leaves less than $27mil for rest of roster before you start paying Lux Tax. In fantasy world no big whup, but if you’ve just payed a fortune to rest of NBA,also paying Lux Tax and forgoing money teams under Lux get is really going to hurt.
2)Rockets have potential replacements on roster if Martin(or Miller) is taken.
3)Humongous salary flexibility. Drafting Martin gains Houston a $10.7mil TPE. If there is a team w/a high draft pick and there’s player the Rockets really want there, offering their First(possib Knicks pick),the lower of the 2012 First and two TPEs to accept a bad contract w/ is one heckuva package.
Yeah but remember
as an expansion team, you’re looking for a star to sell tickets. Martin does that to some extent. Also, you’re picking deep bench guys, so those won’t take too much of your salary cap.
I wouldn’t take Miller (too old, too much $), but you have to look at Martin.
How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!
More likely sell Draft pick to fans
Chances are the team will sell fans on newness, young players and hype the heck out of their first draft pick.
As for other posted point about him being a trade chip, fair enough, but if you are trading him for players, again you are tying up a huge portion of your cap in just a couple of players.
The Rockets could also leave him exposed and reach a deal w/the expansion team where the Rox give a Second,or the lower of 2012 Firsts in order he not be picked and Miller is…
But really it depends on this season. If Martin is a big part of season and helps Rockets in deep Playoff run, obviously you don’t expose him. But if it’a a 50 win season w/a First Rd exit,I think the Rockets take the chance.
Same applies to Hill and Taylor. If they don’t make much of a contribution, they’re gonna be exposed.
Its an enticing gamble.
Do you leave him out there hoping that the other team will be scared away by his cost( thereby saving one of your other players) or do you protect him and potentially lose one of your other guys.
I would go with protect. I wouldnt protect Miller. He is a good guy but I dont think that an expansion team is going to be looking at miller to come in and play serious min for them. He is a good serviceable backup and not a guy to start for an expansion team/.
I can tell you right now that if Martin was left unprotected
I’d pick him. Regardless of a salary, he’s a huge trade chip.

i agree with you on your 8 picks...Miller and Taylor are replaceable
but we can’t afford to lose K-Mart…i mean, that’s “star” (take it as you like) level play right there….Miller is a good backup but he is pretty old so idk if i would keep him or Hill…maybe if we could redraft one of our other players we keep him?
ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!
hill is young with talent who is also very cheep
if i were an expansion team he would def be one of the guys im looking at.
