Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

I like limiting the big fella's minutes, but to go out and say he can't play more than 24 minutes period? Not too thrilled about that.

No wonder we're offering Erick Dampier a two-year, $4 million contract.

Kudos to Dream94 for catching this way before me.

Erick Dampier……………………………..Just gonna say, I’m not a fan.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Not a fan of Damp either... BUT it lets us trade Yao as an expiring contract easily

Any player limited to 24 minutes a game = not a franchise star anymore

Let him go this season and rebuild…

I don't believe it, but I like the statement

I like that Keith Jones came out and said it. It takes a lot of pressure off of Yao and puts it on Jones, which is a good thing. That being said, I think its impossible Sleepy won’t play him more than that. Wasn’t Owen Daniels only supposed to play 20 snaps on Sunday?

And on Dampier: He may be ugly. He may have been grossly overpaid. But the guy is a very good defensive center, and that was our greatest weakness last year. And lets not forget, he is the second best center int he NBA.

In all seriousness, the guy does what he does very well and I’d love to have him on the roster.

I feel you man

But still, Its Erick Dampier………………………..Theirs a certain mental block there.

Dampier isn't great

but as a third-string center, he’s certainly serviceable. And $2 million a year isn’t overpaying him, either. The article says the Heat are offering a minimum contract and the Grizzlies have an offer, too. It’s Feigen so you can trust it.

It’s tough to accept a former Mav as a Rocket, but at least he never played for Utah…

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

by ak2themax on Sep 16, 2010 1:42 AM CDT up reply actions

unfortunately, my memories of Dampier remains of him getting abused by Yao

where’s DJ Mbenga when you need him?

and we interested in the Fesenko kid as well? What the heck is going on?

by NVP on Sep 16, 2010 2:16 AM CDT up reply actions

And, uh, that will increase to 32-35 by midseason right?

RIGHT?!?!

Coming into the season

I felt the magic number should be 30 minutes. I think putting a cap on the number is ridiculous, but now that we know we can play (and win) without Yao, so we can tailor games around his minutes. I think 28-32 minutes is where he should be in March and April, with an increase during the playoffs.

by ak2themax on Sep 16, 2010 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks ak2themax

I think the key statement in the above article is this part:

"Twenty-four is his number all year," Jones said. "Playoffs come, things could change. We’re trying to get him through April."

So maybe if he’s healthy come playoff time, Yao will get more minutes.

by Dream94 on Sep 16, 2010 12:57 AM CDT reply actions

Absolutely

the numbers better go up during the playoffs. When the tempo slows and physicality takes over, I want Yao in our corner for at least 35 minutes a night. But we’ll see.

by ak2themax on Sep 16, 2010 1:45 AM CDT up reply actions

well

He is a beast if healthy, granted. Let’s just hope he makes it healthy through the year. I’m a Rockets fan for the last three years, and I only remember him getting injured.

by galicae on Sep 16, 2010 3:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Tough situation.

I hope we get an easy-ish first round matchup, because even though Yao will be a training room beast, there’s a huge difference in conditioning between 24 and 35 minutes. If he can spend the first round working his way into the game a little more (maybe 30 minutes?) then hopefully he won’t be dead by the (hopefully) conference finals.

by Moondebah on Sep 16, 2010 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

100% agree

I think if he plays 30 minutes + in the playoffs then we will be good to go.

by Dream94 on Sep 16, 2010 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Excluding any injuries of course

by Dream94 on Sep 16, 2010 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

24 min a game? It's good RA already had practice with 7 min per game of TMac last year.

How to allocate those 24 min?

I think players want to be warmed up when they play, right? So does that mean 1st quarter and 3rd quarters? Or will we need him more in the closing minutes?

Boy, I don’t envy RA’s task.

by RoxBeliever on Sep 16, 2010 4:11 AM CDT reply actions

My guess?

Yao’s the first sub out in the first, about halfway through (6 min). Comes back in for another 6 in the 2nd quarter (12 min). Enters midway through the 3rd and either stays on the court (if it’s not a close game) or sits at the quarter so he can come back for the closing minutes.

That way he gets 6 minutes per quarter, and could play as much as 12 in a row (midway in the 3rd through midway in the 4th) which will better simulate the conditioning needed in the playoffs. His longest break would be halftime through the middle of the third, which wouldn’t cool him off too much. And going into the 4th he would only have 18 under his belt, so you can choose when to play him based on the game situation.

by Moondebah on Sep 16, 2010 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions

That sounds pretty good

or we can go with 8 minutes in the first quarter, 4 at the end of the half, 4 at the beginning of the next half, and then the last 8. But yeah, Adelman’s got his work cut out for him.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

by ak2themax on Sep 16, 2010 7:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I love it. Absolutely love it.

Yao will definitely get more minutes in the playoffs if we start making a serious run. Making the statement now (and explicit) will tell free agents like Dampier “You won’t really be our 3rd string center.”

Maybe it gives us an extra couple of losses in the regular season, but that shouldn’t mean too much in the playoffs. The past few years of tightly bunched Western Conference teams are the exception, not the rule. At least you can’t make big long-term decisions like protecting the health of your player with things like seeding in mind when you are still 7 months from the playoffs.

I was about to say “plus, we’ll end up getting a better draft pick than we deserve” but unless the Knicks beat us (or win the lottery), our position doesn’t matter.

by Moondebah on Sep 16, 2010 7:48 AM CDT reply actions

Like I said on Twitter

For those concerned about Dampier, I see no reason to believe at this point in his career why he wouldn’t choose to go ring chasing with the trio of idiots in South Beach. And if for some reason he does choose the Rockets, well I guess you can never have enough size on your team. Look at the Celtics.

I still believe Utah matches any offer that Fesenko gets.

by Mike Kerns on Sep 16, 2010 8:12 AM CDT reply actions

I always thought he should play about that many minutes

Just makes sense to me. Don’t take any unnecessary chances. It’s just the regular season, and we’d be a playoff team even with no Yao.

Better Centers

Yao Ming, Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Marcus Camby (PF/C), Al Jefferson (When he plays C), Timmy D (When he plays C), And arguably Tyson Chandler, off the top of my head.

Meat? They're made out of Meat? Meat.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

all jokes aside

i think he’ll go to Heat, if he’s smart as the talent he claimed to be. And I don’t get why Rocket wants him. we are really REALLY LOADED with guys play at the middle right now.

Is the geek seeing something I don’t (NO! don’t answer that!) is he going to be stock up for a trade?
