Top 25 Rockets of All-Time

I'm working on a post for a contribution I'm making to what basically amounts to someone's blog and I was looking for some input from the Dream Shakers. The list is the Top 25 Rockets of All-Time and will have 25 profiles (1 for each player). These are the ones I have so far, and would love feedback/suggestions for people worth removing or adding.

Star-divide

1. Hakeem Olajuwon

2. Moses Malone

3. Elvin Hayes

4. Calvin Murphy

5. Clyde Drexler

6. Ralph Sampson

7. Rudy Tomjanovich

8. Charles Barkley

9. Otis Thorpe

10. Tracy McGrady

11. Rick Barry (might drop him because he played for so little time as a Rocket)

12. Yao Ming

13. Joe Barry Carroll

After that I kinda just have 12 names that I haven't ordered yet:

Shane Battier

Kenny Smith

Vernon Maxwell

Steve Francis

Mike Newlin

Robert Reid

Allen Leavell

Sleepy Floyd

Robert Horry

Chuck Hayes

Dikembe Mutombo

Luis Scola

Rafer (I know) Alston

Your thoughts?

No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Do not cut/paste entire sections of content from other websites. Thanks.

I'd have to put Yao higher.

I don't think

they are supposed to be in order, are they? For sure Yao and McGrady would be much higher.

by Gulder_Roy on Feb 1, 2011 5:33 AM CST up reply actions

Rafer?

I’d rather have Moochie Norris on this list.

No Cuttino Mobley?

Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.

That's a good one

He should be on here for sure. Thanks!

I like the Rockets. The Rockets do not like me.

Moochie Norris over Rafer Alston

i put Francis

and vernon Maxwell in the top 10, and take out Barkley and McGrady.

by since86rocketsfan on Jan 31, 2011 4:35 PM CST reply actions

where is the love for

Kenny Smith?

He played 6 years for the Rockets and started almost every game until his last year.

He put up almost 13ppg while shooting .485 from the field, 40% from 3 pt. land, dished out 5 assists a game and ripped the young fellahs of their lunch money almost once a game.

AND HE LED TOOK HELPED US WIN 2 TITLES IN H-TOWN

Where is the love man?!?!?!

by 4theluvofthegame on Jan 31, 2011 5:15 PM CST reply actions

Ya!

That means he sucks!

I like the Rockets. The Rockets do not like me.

by Patrick Harrel on Feb 1, 2011 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

in fact, it does!

He had one job. He failed to do his job. Simple as that.

by grungedave on Feb 2, 2011 8:51 AM CST up reply actions

well...

First, get barkley off that list entirely. Not the he wasn’t an all-time great, he just wasn’t all-that-great when we got him.
Move yao up to that spot and switch rudy with tmac.
If battier and hayes are on there, where is scola’s spot? Imagining what he could have done coupled inside with hakeem makes me warm in my man-parts.
Other than that, ur damn near spot on

ooops!

Thought u rated tmac over rudy….nevermind that part

And if I'm being serious

no Kevin Martin or Aaron Brooks (You have Rafer Alston listed, man!)?

We all like to talk without much to say...

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 6:22 PM CST up reply actions

Martin's been here less than a year

Brooks contributed for two years. Alston was the one guy that I think I’ll leave off, but I put him up there for poops and giggles.

I like the Rockets. The Rockets do not like me.

by Patrick Harrel on Jan 31, 2011 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

What are the boundaries

you have to abide by?

We all like to talk without much to say...

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Has to have played at least 1 full season with the team

Otherwise, I have free rein. Brooks is a good choice, I might add him to the list.

I like the Rockets. The Rockets do not like me.

When's the deadline for the article?

After we hit the trade deadline Kevin Martin qualifies.

The onlt thing Dream has on Cook is rings

Brian Cook is the greatest player to never win a ring. I can guarantee you he will carry the Clipper to the promise lad this season. He is the face of the basketball world as we know it.

Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.

Agreed

Why are the Clips starting that scrub rookie ahead of him?

I like the Rockets. The Rockets do not like me.

?

Didnt Mario drag us out the shit a couple of times.

Mario Elie for sure

Thank you

by Patrick Harrel on Jan 31, 2011 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

I would move T-Mac, Yao and Battier up higher...

whether we like it or not, T-Mac was the best player who I believe should be placed behind Hakeem at No. 2…him or Yao…Also, I think Battier is top 25 Rockets caliber, he is our Leader and spirit. Also, Kenny Smith should be much Higher…maybe get rid of Barkley. And if we have Barkley on there, might as well put Pippen too…

ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Depends on how we're talking best

attitude? Ability? Contributions? Personal attachment?

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

T Mac should definitely be very high on here

Quit hatin’

I'm a household name... at my house.

Is it hating

or being realistic?

We all like to talk without much to say...

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 8:47 PM CST up reply actions

lol nah.

that’s hatin’..he was great, among top 3 players in the league in his tenure here
bitterness about the end and emotions aside he should be at least top 5 up here.

I'm a household name... at my house.

by taylorrohrman on Jan 31, 2011 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

Entirely a matter of perspective.

He was supremely gifted but there are other factors to take in other than talent in evaluating a guy.

We all like to talk without much to say...

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

True.

in that case Sam Cassell should be listed, that one shot should get that Alienhead in here.lol.

I'm a household name... at my house.

by taylorrohrman on Jan 31, 2011 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

I'm really glad

I’m not the only one who sees Cassell and immediately thinks he’s an alien.

We all like to talk without much to say...

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

lol you two aren't alien-ated in thinking that...lol fail pun..

anywho…T-Mac was a great player and I hate that he quit but years and years of pain will do that to a man…why, even Beowulf got weak…but I digress, Cassell is most definitely not from this planet.

ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Roxbybirth on Jan 31, 2011 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

Ya know what

Bump off Bryan Cook’s 25th place finish, put in Beowulf. List solved.

Also, Beowulf didn’t get weak, blaze of glory killing a dragon =/= Weak. Also, laughed hard with Grendel being very close to the word Grundel. If you haven’t read Seamus Heaney’s translation you haven’t fully lived.

We all like to talk without much to say...

by BD34 on Jan 31, 2011 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

If this is in order

Based on how well he played as a Rocket, then Tmac moves up ahead of everyone except Hakeem, Malone and maybe Elvin Hayes. Tmac was the most skilled and simply the best player EVER on the Rockets. Those big guys was just bigger and, therefore, more valuable.

What this list really shows is that maybe there were not 25 great players in the entire history of the Rockets.

by Gulder_Roy on Feb 1, 2011 5:38 AM CST up reply actions

i must side with bd on this

Brian cook all the way. In all those catagories- achievment, attachment etc. He reigns supreme

Or Hilton Armstrong

Where is my banhammer when I need it?

How dare you disrespect the greatest offensive force known to the Rockets!

Bosjan Nochbar

He should be on here for the simple fact that he pissed off Karl Malone in that playoff series against the Lakers a while back.

Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.

I think you have opened a can of worms.
Hakeem then Moses I would agree.
Elvin Hayes was at the end of his measure when he came to Houston (like Barkley and Pippen). Calvin Murphy gave better service to the Rockets over a longer period (and better stats). Get onto basketball-reference.com

hmm… Sam Cassell thats what a rookie should play like in the Finals. He didnt get years to develop!

by craigj007 on Feb 1, 2011 2:07 AM CST reply actions

Ummmm

What the F is Joe Barry Carroll doing on this list?

also needs Sam and Mario Elie.

Horry better be top 10.

Barkley was shit as a Rocket

also needs a token white guy shooter: Bullard or Pete Chilcutt

by grungedave on Feb 1, 2011 2:13 PM CST reply actions

I don't know why I had JBC on there

I had this idea in my head that he was really good for us at one point and then realized he played for us for one year and was kinda crappy… Barkley still brought a consistent double-double and no matter how much he tries to poop on us after his career, he still was very valuable. I’m putting in Cassell and Elie, and I don’t know where Horry would be. He’s in the 10-15 range for me.

I like the Rockets. The Rockets do not like me.

by Patrick Harrel on Feb 1, 2011 4:10 PM CST up reply actions

tough call

Barkley only played a few years for the Rockets…. he’s mostly an afterthought.

Drexler had a short Rockets career, but he did a lot in those 4 years. Unlike Barkley.

Good post, man.

I enjoyed that read. I know each is debatable, but you had a good choice. Rafer will always be an anomoly to me. And of course, the fact that you put the Chuckwagon in there thereby makes you awesome.
