FanPost

It's December 9th, what would you do?

Yes, that's right.  It's time for the proposterous ideas to come forth and everyone pretend they are Daryl Morey.  If you look around the NBA, you will not find more confused fans, than you will here in Houston.  It seems like half of the die hards are ready to develop the '09 "busts," while the other half are ready to drop these "assets" without remorse.

Whether you see Morey as an innovator or an idiot, this is a fanpost that will give you the opportunity to be GM for a day.  Whether it was waiting on Gortat's doorstep the minute free agency opened, or sending fans across the country trying to lure a top free agent, our general manager is not Carroll Dawson.  Right or wrong, I don't think the owner wants to lose to win.  What we do know?  Finishing as the 9th seed and drafting 14th the last two seasons cannot happen again.

So what will it be???  Re-sign the Chuckwagon?  Overpay Nene?  Add another power forward?  Amnesty Thabeet?  See if Yao can pass a physical?  Anyway you want to look at it, the Rockets are in a good position to be big players in next summer's draft and free agency.  This is what I would do....

Re-sign Chuck.  Look, he is and has been one of the most valuable Rockets for a while now.  Yes, we know he is vertically challenged, but he brings it everynight and you know what you're going to get.  Not to mention, he has great versatility.  He can play 2 positions, defend anyone in the post, and has improved offensive skills, especially passing.  This is the kind of guy who should be a Rocket for life.

Move Luis Scola.  I would try and trade him for expirings, future picks, young talent... Just about anything.  If you are unable to do so, use the amnesty clause.  (You would have to imagine that another organization would pick up a hefty amount of his contract.)  Yes, he's a big part of the offense but his value has peaked.  Not to mention Patterson, in brief playing time last season, showed that he's the future at power forward.  I would only imagine that he will continue to develop and become a better defender as well as an elite David West type pick n' roll forward.  He is the best rebounder on the team already.

Trade with Philiadelphia.  I would send Hasheem Thabeet, Chase Buddinger, Terrence Williams and Shane Battier trade exception in return for Andre Igoudala and Maurese Speights.  Would this even work?  I don't know didn't try, but something to this measure.  Philly needs to re-sign Hawes and T. Young.  They would also rather not amnesty Igoudala, but Elton Brand instead.  Both AI and Speights are kind of in the dog house in Philly.  Why for Houston?  You now have an athletic guy on the perimiter who can guard mostly all the SFs in the NBA.  AI is also going to give you more rebounds, blocks, and steals than you were getting at that position.  Speights is a young player who needs a change of scenery.  He's played well in the limited time he's had, and a guy like McHale could develop him into a great defensive big man, all the while becoming a better post player.  Like Chuck, he has a big NBA body and is tough to move down low.  If he doesn't work out, he is paid right under 3 million and is a free agent next summer.  I would much rather develop him than over pay any of the centers in this year's free agency.

Keep an eye out for Amnesty casualties, such as Andres Beidrins and Brendan Haywood.

There you have it...  This is what I would do.  Mind you, there is still a ton of flexibilty next summer with the draft and salary cap.  I know I am probably in the minority here, but I am a realist.  If the Rockets swing and miss for CP3 and D. Howard, this franchise will be set back even more.
