I understand the fans angst, I sincerely do. I am just as mad as anyone about what has transpired with David Stern killing the Rockets chances at landing Pau Gasol. I know I will be damned for saying this but.....David Stern was right. The Hornets got a much better deal from the Clippers, at least one that is better for the Hornets franchise. I will explain my reasoning after the jump.
First off the main cog in the original proposed trade was Lamar Odom. I sincerely thought he was being way overvalued by the Hornets front office. If you want proof just look and see what the Lakers got in return for Odom from the Mavericks. The truth of the matter is the Lakers were making out like Bandits in that deal. Shedding Lamar's horrible contract and basically giving up Pau Gasol to bring in Chris Paul.
From the Rockets perspective we were making out quite well too. I know we all love Scola and Martin here but the truth of the matter is they are one talent players. Albiet very talented offensively. Martin is injury-prone and Scola cannot play above the basket and has several years left on his contract.
The Hornets would have received a injury-prone SG who plays no defense, an undersized PF who plays under the rim and has a relatively big contract, and a tweener player who's value to anyone but the Hornets was a 2nd round pick. The 1st round pick in the deal was not very attractive either. There is a good chance the Knicks will not be in the lottery next season and even so the pick is top five proteced. Compare that with small contracts of Gordon and Aminu, (both young players with upside - Gordon has a ton of upside) Kamans expiring contract, remember nexts year there will actually be some good Free Agents on the market. Then the coup de grâce of the deal is the Timberwolves UNPROTECTED first round pick. (Yes I said the T-Wolves and yes I said unprotected)
If Morey cant find another superstar, I honestly think the best Rockets fans can hope for is that Morey can swing a deal for Martin and Scola and hope they can bring back 1 if not 2 lottery picks for next season. I trust in Moreys ability to draft well. I think Morris is a solid pick and has a shot at being special, we already know Patterson can be special. If we flip Scola and Martin for two first round picks next season that should give us 5 total. (Assuming New Jersey's pick is not top 14 and New Yorks pick is not top 5)
Hopefully that should be enough Ammo to get into the top of next years very deep draft class and truly have a shot to truly rebuild. I hope Lowry, Patterson, and Morris make big strides and we can go into next season FINALLY having the assets to actually do something.
