NBA Trade Rumors Discussion Thread
With the rumors racing all around about a potential deal to get Pau Gasol in a Rockets jersey just minutes after the talks seemed dead, things have truly come to a head tonight. Now, as Adrian Wojnarowski, Marc Stein, Sam Amick, and others reporting that a deal is close, the Rockets appear likely to have found a star and a successor for Yao in the front court.
As has been widely reported, this is the likely deal:
New Orleans receives: Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and Goran Dragic. UPDATE: Also to receive undetermined draft considerations
Houston receives: Pau Gasol
Los Angeles receives: Chris Paul, opportunity to still get Dwight Howard, many championships
Discuss the Gasol rumors, the potential for Nene in Houston, or even the chance of the dirtiest front court ever (Gasol/Gasol) in the comments. Updates to come as details become available.
UPDATE at 5:47 PM: Adrian Wojnarowski is now reporting that New Orleans will likely receive more than just the rumored Odom/Martin/Scola/Dragic package.
It is likely that the Hornets will receive draft picks as part of a package for Paul, but source says: "Those are still being determined."

Are we giving up too much for Pau?
Losing Scola, Martin and Dragic? I like Lee, but damn that’s a lot to give up.
pretty much they are just taking scolas contract at this point
Freeing up cap space for another player to sign. Wait til the final product to reserve judgement

This deal paves way for Nene signing
Rockets are a near 8 or 7 seed playoff team with Gasol and potentially 5 or 4 with Nene. Signing Nene would give us the best frontcourt in the NBA.
That's a stretch
I’d rather have Gasol/Randolph but we still look very good with P. Gasol/Nene.

I don't know about that.

Still behind Richard Jefferson signing if we want to be legit contenders.
Holy shit the lockdown defense to do that with Dalembert at center? Plenty of scoring from our old leftovers plus Gasol? I’m excited.

He got paid after playing like Moses Malone

I am somewhat worried about where some of the offense would come from...
I know Gasol is a skilled offensively, a great offensive rebounder and a solid passer.. Which is why I may be leaning a little towards adding Nene instead of Dalambert. He may give you a little more on the offensive side, but of course will probably cost close to twice as much.
If you can feel them, they are real.
Fuck everything. I hate all of this.
I really do. Pau Gasol? Are we really OK with getting a guy, who, at one point, will be 33 years old and getting paid 19 million? Things must really not be going well in FA

Im ok with this.
Gasol is that all star that Morey has been trying to get. Sure he’s not a melo or cp3 but he has enough talent to attract other quality players. A front court with nene or dalembert and gasol could be deadly. And I think Lees ready to start again. Hell bring the energy and d that martin could not.

I understanted.
That he wanted to play for Houston cause they were giving the most money, so probably no discount.

Does Morey need to snag Nene or Dalembert to make this trade a win for us?
I think Dalembert would be adequate for us, Nene would be killer though

I love Martin’s offense, but honestly, he is so bad at defense that he’s probably neutral. Lee and Lowry is a nasty defensive backcourt that doesn’t give anything up on offense. I think that lets us rest a little easier with Budinger at the wing draining threes.

Sentimental?
Look, I’m not doubting Gasol as a player. I’m past that. But sentiment has nothing to do with the fact that what we gave up would be nowhere near would any other team would give up for a player of Gasol’s caliber. I’ll miss Martin and Scola, that’s for sure. I knew they were on their way out. Dragic? He was a young stud, and I think I might miss him the most. From Dragic to Flynn at backup is a larger step than most expect. To top it off, a 1st round draft pick? I just don’t know man. I may seem like the uneducated prick for siding the with the “casual fans” side of the argument but I just don’t get it. Especially since Gasol isn’t exactly a young player himself.

I’m not mad we used the pick. I’m mad that we used a pick after gutting our roster like that. If you think that you can win a championship with Gasol being your best player, then I just don’t know. That's true.

Yeah, that's why he started last year
Don’t really like the guy but you can’t deny the fact that he’s overshadowed by Kobe, he should definitelly have been NBA Finale MVP in 2010.
This FIXES ths depth problem
If anything, we’ve had too much depth, so we can’t give some players the time they should get.
Consolidate players for a star. And Gasol’s a top 15 player. Scola’s barely a top 10 PF.
Minnesotan Rockets fan
I totally disagree.

Scola will give you just as much production as Pau will,
and is cheaper. Martin is an all-star quality SG in the right system. Dragic is a decent player off the bench. Pau is a 31 year old softy. But hey, it’s all imo.
I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

Martin isn't All-Star quality hate to break it.
Gasol has a much better offensive game and defensive game than Scola.
If you would rate them all on a 100 point scale,
for me, it’s like this…………
Gasol 88
Scola 82
Martin 84
Dragic 72
It’s just not an even trade to me. Not that I think your players are/were great or anything, but Gasol isn’t either.

You also have to take into consideration
That either Nene or Dalembert is going to be a Rocket as well.
They could've made other moves and still had a shot at those guys.

When you have an opportunity
To trade for an All Star you do it. It’s as simple as that.
I really think Martin and Scola could be close to that,
but you guys know more about them than I do.

2k12 numbers. You stealing them
and Martin and Scola are 80 at best. Dragic is mid to high 60’s like a 67.
I didn't look at any 2K12 numbers for that.
That’s the talent level I view them as.

Overrestimating Scola and Martin
Martin 81
Scola 79
BUT they’re replace in the starting 5 by :
Lee 75
Patterson 73
And what do you feel about Pau?

I think that's the other thing
I’m reasonably confident that Lee and Patterson can do a decent job replacing the two. If you don’t post here regularly, you won’t know that we’re EXTREMELY high on Patterson after his rookie season.
Minnesotan Rockets fan
I'm a Bobcats fan,
as you can tell, and I’m high on Patterson as well. However, I still think you guys could’ve turned the Scola and Martin into 1st round picks. I think that would have more of a chance of carrying you to a title than Pau would.

That’s why I want to hold on to D.J. for at least half of the season before we entertain any trade offers for him.

Our owner has made it very clear that tanking isn't an option.
Given that, I’d say our best route is formulating a competitive team that can attract a superstar with cap room. This does it.
Minnesotan Rockets fan
I don't think there are any more superstars available
right now, but Houston should be a top destination in the coming years. It’s a wonderful city. They usually make great deals. This is the first bad one, imo, to come through in a while. But it won’t look so bad if Nene or Dalembert are added.

i like your logic for sure and on paper it looks not so great. but u have to take into consideration that Houston needed a legit big name to make Hou more attractive to FA. Gasol gives Hou this and a championship mentality again.
There’s a reason why Kobe luv’d playing with Gasol.
Pau was the best player on all those Memphis squads and it
lead to a bunch of first round sweeps. I just don’t trust him to be my number 1. But best of luck to you guys.

yes for sure
i luv scola and martin but PF’s like Pau with his skill set don’t come around that often.
i will REALLY love this trade if the rockets can swing Nene or Dalember to pair with Gasol.
Rockets were deep in SF and PF so losing Scola doesn’t hurt too much. We lose offense with Martin but gain defense and more all around play with Lee starting.
I understand.
I just think you guys got hosed and would have come out a lot better looking into other deals.

How'd Scola and Martin do last year?
Maybe we need to try fresh tactics, and gasp a supremely talented big man may help out with that.
Our team is now better
Look at the numbers from last season. We had the 3rd best offense in the league last year and one of the worst defenses. We desperately needed size and Mchale kept talking about wanting us to play defense and rebound better. We freed up some cap room to make a solid run at Nene and possibly keep Chuck Hayes
Man, I was excited for preseason games before.
Now its insane
Without a doubt.
I’m not holding back my distaste for this trade, but man am I anxious to see what this team will be like.

It’s a great day to be a Rockets fan…. Rockets get their star who’s also a big man. Rockets actually get more flexibility and didn’t sell out all the draft picks (yet).
Meanwhile… Dallas is not in any form of conversations with Chandler anymore and the Spurs struck out with Caron Butler, **** the spurs with a capital F!! and D-Mo set a Euro-league record with 18 defensive rebounds in his last game!!!
I understand there’s some personal attatchment to these players, but Martin and Scola were going to lead us on a fast strack to nowhere.
If you can feel them, they are real.

A lot are calling Pau soft
I get that, but its not like Martin and Scola were warriors out there. We traded soft for soft but the Rockets also got someone who has been there. Pau has a ring and knows what it takes to get one. I dont think our roster has too many of those guys. Im not jumping for joy about this trade, but I also dont hate it.

Gasol/Pat-Pat?
Thabeet? Chuck? Hill?
I don’t really know about this trade…we got a star, yes. But we didn’t really address much….I sure hope if this goes down we have some center we can pick up.

I am with you on this one.
Getting a big doesn’t matter if there is no team around him. Look at all the great bigs in the league right now, who is winning by themselves? I think all of us understand that if nothing else happens, that this season is already a wash. The only way we bring in another big to complement Pau Gasol is if we trade for one, because nobody significant ever signs with the rockets in free agency. This team does not get any better from this trade, and we are requiring our role players to replace the leftover numbers that Gasol doesn’t pick up from martin and scola. I want this to work as bad as the rest of you, but if nothing else happens, I don’t see how we can be positive at this point.
That's how I would feel.
I mean, I don’t mean to sound like a troll or anything, but would you guys ever make a straight up deal of Martin, Scola, Dragic, and a 1st round pick for Pau? That’s what it really comes down to. I can’t see anyone making such an offer for someone like Pau.

How can I be thrilled with this? We are going on the assumption that Morey pulls something else off that will help us contend deep in the playoffs. How many big names has Morey pulled in? Martin and Scola are the only quality players he has pulled in via trade, and he has signed ZERO big name free agents.
Yeah.
From the outside looking it, it appears as though most Rocket fans are happy with this trade contingent upon other deals being made. Hopefully for you guys’ sake, those deals can be made. I really think the package you guys gave up for Gasol could have been used to pull in a better single star (maybe even Howard), or a combination of other players and/or draft picks.
I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

It's simple dude....
Lee and Gasol > Martin and Scola… Martin, Bud, and Scola are all liabilities defensively. Now with Bud on the floor with Lee, they can interchange and Lee can guard the more athletic sg or sf making Bud not as much of a liability.
If you can feel them, they are real.
