NBA Trade Rumors Discussion Thread

With the rumors racing all around about a potential deal to get Pau Gasol in a Rockets jersey just minutes after the talks seemed dead, things have truly come to a head tonight. Now, as Adrian Wojnarowski, Marc Stein, Sam Amick, and others reporting that a deal is close, the Rockets appear likely to have found a star and a successor for Yao in the front court.

As has been widely reported, this is the likely deal:

New Orleans receives: Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and Goran Dragic. UPDATE: Also to receive undetermined draft considerations

Houston receives: Pau Gasol

Los Angeles receives: Chris Paul, opportunity to still get Dwight Howard, many championships

Discuss the Gasol rumors, the potential for Nene in Houston, or even the chance of the dirtiest front court ever (Gasol/Gasol) in the comments. Updates to come as details become available.

UPDATE at 5:47 PM: Adrian Wojnarowski is now reporting that New Orleans will likely receive more than just the rumored Odom/Martin/Scola/Dragic package.

It is likely that the Hornets will receive draft picks as part of a package for Paul, but source says: "Those are still being determined."

No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Do not cut/paste entire sections of content from other websites. Thanks.

Are we giving up too much for Pau?

Losing Scola, Martin and Dragic? I like Lee, but damn that’s a lot to give up.

This deal paves way for Nene signing

Rockets are a near 8 or 7 seed playoff team with Gasol and potentially 5 or 4 with Nene. Signing Nene would give us the best frontcourt in the NBA.

by James Schmidt on Dec 8, 2011 5:41 PM CST reply actions

That's a stretch

I’d rather have Gasol/Randolph but we still look very good with P. Gasol/Nene.

Check out The Dream Shake.

by Patrick Harrel on Dec 8, 2011 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know about that.

Pau Gasol > Randolph marc is barely better than nene, Nene is an offensive threat and Marc isn’t quite

by James Schmidt on Dec 8, 2011 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

I think Gasol > Randolph and Nene > Gasol

Gasol has more upside, but Nene is better right now

by James Schmidt on Dec 8, 2011 5:47 PM CST up reply actions

Still behind Richard Jefferson signing if we want to be legit contenders.

Holy shit the lockdown defense to do that with Dalembert at center? Plenty of scoring from our old leftovers plus Gasol? I’m excited.

I am somewhat worried about where some of the offense would come from...

I know Gasol is a skilled offensively, a great offensive rebounder and a solid passer.. Which is why I may be leaning a little towards adding Nene instead of Dalambert. He may give you a little more on the offensive side, but of course will probably cost close to twice as much.

Im ok with this.

Gasol is that all star that Morey has been trying to get. Sure he’s not a melo or cp3 but he has enough talent to attract other quality players. A front court with nene or dalembert and gasol could be deadly. And I think Lees ready to start again. Hell bring the energy and d that martin could not.

I love Martin’s offense, but honestly, he is so bad at defense that he’s probably neutral. Lee and Lowry is a nasty defensive backcourt that doesn’t give anything up on offense. I think that lets us rest a little easier with Budinger at the wing draining threes.

I'm just saying

He certainly did not carry the Lakers, and he got the Grizzlies in the playoffs as the 8th seed once or twice. I really don’t hate Pau Gasol, I just feel that we are getting fleeced in this deal. Yes, he is a gifted offensive player, but I think we are the only team to place so much value on him.

Sentimental?

Look, I’m not doubting Gasol as a player. I’m past that. But sentiment has nothing to do with the fact that what we gave up would be nowhere near would any other team would give up for a player of Gasol’s caliber. I’ll miss Martin and Scola, that’s for sure. I knew they were on their way out. Dragic? He was a young stud, and I think I might miss him the most. From Dragic to Flynn at backup is a larger step than most expect. To top it off, a 1st round draft pick? I just don’t know man. I may seem like the uneducated prick for siding the with the “casual fans” side of the argument but I just don’t get it. Especially since Gasol isn’t exactly a young player himself.

dont forget he’s coming from a team that was run by Coach Rambis. Our offense will be much more suited to his style.

Dragic a young stud?

A backup who people overhype. Good backup, not a future titan.

The pick? We had two first rounders and everyone wanted to trade them to move up. It was to be used, why cry now?

Maybe "stud" was used in the wrong context. Fine.

I’m not mad we used the pick. I’m mad that we used a pick after gutting our roster like that. If you think that you can win a championship with Gasol being your best player, then I just don’t know. I’m just the immediate reaction is to call the “we’re going to sign Nene!” card, but does a lineup of Lowry-Lee-Budinger-Gasol-Nene look championship caliber to you? (although I agree we should look for a SF right now).

No it's just that people overhype them way too much.

Martin is a one dimmensional scorer who plays zero defense. Now Lee gets to start who has a solid offensive game and way better defense. You act like Dragic is going to be a top 5 PG in the league when he’s just a backup.

This FIXES ths depth problem

If anything, we’ve had too much depth, so we can’t give some players the time they should get.

Consolidate players for a star. And Gasol’s a top 15 player. Scola’s barely a top 10 PF.

I am with you on this one.

Getting a big doesn’t matter if there is no team around him. Look at all the great bigs in the league right now, who is winning by themselves? I think all of us understand that if nothing else happens, that this season is already a wash. The only way we bring in another big to complement Pau Gasol is if we trade for one, because nobody significant ever signs with the rockets in free agency. This team does not get any better from this trade, and we are requiring our role players to replace the leftover numbers that Gasol doesn’t pick up from martin and scola. I want this to work as bad as the rest of you, but if nothing else happens, I don’t see how we can be positive at this point.

That's how I would feel.

I mean, I don’t mean to sound like a troll or anything, but would you guys ever make a straight up deal of Martin, Scola, Dragic, and a 1st round pick for Pau? That’s what it really comes down to. I can’t see anyone making such an offer for someone like Pau.

Lol. I knew it had to be a Rocket fan on here that wasn't that thrilled with the trade.

Every Rocket fan I seen on ESPN was highly upset.

How can I be thrilled with this? We are going on the assumption that Morey pulls something else off that will help us contend deep in the playoffs. How many big names has Morey pulled in? Martin and Scola are the only quality players he has pulled in via trade, and he has signed ZERO big name free agents.

Yeah.

From the outside looking it, it appears as though most Rocket fans are happy with this trade contingent upon other deals being made. Hopefully for you guys’ sake, those deals can be made. I really think the package you guys gave up for Gasol could have been used to pull in a better single star (maybe even Howard), or a combination of other players and/or draft picks.

It's simple dude....

Lee and Gasol > Martin and Scola… Martin, Bud, and Scola are all liabilities defensively. Now with Bud on the floor with Lee, they can interchange and Lee can guard the more athletic sg or sf making Bud not as much of a liability.

If you can feel them, they are real.
