The All-Star reserves were named today and thankfully they put Blake Griffin on the Western squad. I know he is a rookie and all that, and on a subpar team (although their play lately has been pretty decent) but the dude can flat out play, leading all Rookies in FG % with .518 scoring 23 points per game also leading all rookies, his 12.7 rebounds also leads all rookies, easy to say he's rookie of the year, and hopefully he can bring back ANY excitement to the dunk contest. If the Clippers can hold on to him, they'll be contenders down the road no doubt. Thats my little bit of thanking the coaches for getting it right this time.
One guy who i'm a little bit surprised got snubbed was Kevin Love. I mean has anybody shown improvement like he has this season. He had the first 30/30 game in 20 years. Yes he is on a horrible team but I mean is he not more deserving than Pau Gasol? Gasol has been less than spectacular this season, does he get to be on the team just because its in L.A? If you compare both, Love beats him in every stat, scoring, rebounding, and he does it in less playing time than Pau does, without any help. He would have gotten my vote.
Two Spurs players made the team, and well deserving. If you have the best record you have to have somebody on the team, I mean the Pistons put 4 of their starters in the All-Star game in 2005-2006 when they had the best record, the Celtics put 3 of their starters in 2007-2008 season. Little bit surprised they put Tim Duncan instead of Tony Parker but Duncan has been steady this season regardless and guided them to a 40-8 record. Boston still put 4 players on the reserves this season, showing that Boston is definitely the big 4 with Rondo. And why didn't Brooke Lopez make the Eastern reserves but Chris Bosh did, he has better numbers than him and is the major building block on the New Jersey Nets. But I guess star power wins the day.
Back to the Starters, I do like the starters on both squads, (even though Yao made the team which just shows they need to take the voting out of the fans hands because it just proves who has more fans) I think this game will be fun to watch with some young and upcoming stars like Kevin Durant. Last years game was fun to watch with it coming down to the wire I will admit, because it still had some great plays but also something to watch towards the end.
Of course I have to mention the Houston Rockets, no all stars this year again. I think Scola is deserving of an All-Star spot but i'm biased, its so hard for him to make a forward spot with all the great forwards in the Western Conference. But he is putting up career numbers and is the Rockets MVP for sure. Kevin Martin, don't really feel all star worthy but is putting up great numbers this year as well. Hopefully next year we will get someone in the game, but until then we just have to sit back and watch the rest of the players play this year and get our players some time to rest up (i'm looking at you Brad Miller).
Until Next Time
