The most important game of the season line has been worn out this season so I won't bother with that angle. There are a few things about the game with the Spurs that will make it a very telling game in relation to the rest of this season. It is one of the remaining games I have tickets for so here is what I will be watching.
If we somehow make it into the playoffs, the Spurs are what we can look forward to. Do we really want to go best of seven with these guys? I am optimistic that we can make a good effort Saturday but if we get our tails kicked I can't say that a series of more of the same does much for anyone. The Spurs have all the proverbial ducks in a row right now, who ever draws that straw will have a tough go of it.
We will have had time to practice going into this game. No, it's not like having pre-season and training camp, but way more time than has been available since the trades. How much if any playing time our new guys get will be telling. Not just for this game but for the remaining games. At some point, the wear and tear on out veterans has to play into the equation. Luis could have done himself real damage trying to play while injured. We have had enough injury issues without creating more by playing guys too many minutes in the last few games of the season.
Finally, loosing this game will not eliminate us mathematically, but even I would not put any money on us if we don't win. That will be a damn steep hill to climb and hoping for help from the teams in front of us is a pipe dream right now. If the playoffs are not a reasonable goal, what do we want to accomplish in the remaining games. I will be interested in seeing how our staff works through the remaining games. If Rick is looking to retire, does he give Turner more responsibility in the remaining games to showcase him for this or other head coaching jobs.
I know talking about life without the playoffs will set of a lot of you off, but sooner or later we do have to accept what we cannot change. We should know if this season falls into that category by late Saturday night. What will you be focused on Saturday night? More importantly, do you think this game is as pivotal as I do and if not, why not?
