EVERYONE: Please Read

I need to make something clear: everyone has different opinions. Everyone is at different levels as a writer. Everyone sees different games differently. This is a fact, whether you like it or not.

For those of you who have chosen to insult those who are simply attempting to pose an idea to the FanPosts, attempting to write for the first time or just felt like getting something off their chest, you need to stop or else you will be banned. I won't name names: you know who you are. In fact, I'm working to improve my demeanor myself.

Here are a few ideas regarding how to approach the FanPosts:

1. If you do not agree with the subject of a FanPost, reply with facts or opinions that do not attack the writer personally or insult him for creating the post in the first place.

2. If you're sick and tired of reading the same topics over and over in the FanPosts, LEAVE THAT POST ALONE. There is no need to be a dick to somebody just to be a dick to somebody. Have some respect. This is not your club.

Look, I like the opinions that are shared around here. I'm a fan of a heated discussion. I'm also one to recognize which posts can remain on the page and which posts absolutely need to be removed. But DO NOT cross the line between presenting a disagreement or argument and doing so in an insulting fashion. We're all better than that.

Thanks,

Tom

Since I'm the subject of this post (A partial subject) could I ask a few clarification questions?

1.) When does a critique become insult. There are obvious infractions like certain words but what constitutes belittling and such varies from person to person. Are there warnings? Are there going to be public examples? Is it subjective or objective? I feel like there’s a lot of gray area if we don’t know whose opinion this is looked at or even if someone is in the wrong direction without ever knowing it.

2.) What is the qualitative effect, as a writer for this site, or rehashing nothing but the same topics and is there any way to encourage people to discuss certain issues within specific threads that address the issue? I’m asking this purely in the interest in limiting turnover of potentially great discussions in the fanposts for favor of just posting whatever, whenever.

3.) What is to be done about baiting members. This is a subjective issue in and of itself but you cannot deny that there are some individuals who seem to make an awfully concerted effort into triggering other members. I’ve seen several instances where people have yanked on Bat’s chain just to set him off and when he does, he gets the flack. I’d hate to think that because someone was provoked that they should bear the brunt of a ban.

4.) Can we add to this list for ways to discuss things in fan posts. This is general and I feel like proposing a little basic schematic in discussions like:

State an opinion.
Back an opinion.
Exchange back and forth in a thoughtful manner.
Any disagreements specifically cite why and ask for clarification if needed.

Again, I’m just looking for clarification because at the end of the day, I like being here, I like discussing topics, but we’re naive if we think certain posts aren’t provocative. I’d love to have more qualitative discussion but 9/10 times when I’m truly discussing an issue and someone feels overwhelmed I’m written off as being mean and then insulted.

Honestly

I think to some people, you can be overwhelming, and from that they take it as you’re being mean. I mean you take arguments as if they were an annoying fly which you then catch and proceed to rip off each leg and wing until all you have is the body. At that point you slam it into the ground, stomp on it repetitively until you get bored.

I like your arguments because it’s like a light in a very dark and long tunnel. Sometimes though, I do see it as somewhat mean. It still is very entertaining to me. Also, you tend to argue sometimes, just for the sake of arguing. I sometimes do it, but that’s because I always have a nagging urge to disprove someone’s stubborn beliefs because of Debate club.

by lucnguye92 on Apr 12, 2011 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I agree entirely. My signature is certainly the way it is because I acknowledge it.

A major part of that is it’s entirely my personality to be a straight shooter. If I think something is straight up ignorant or poor I try to be constructive in my approach but most people take it as destructive. When I feel something is in poor taste or just inflammatory I will get excessive and I need to reel that in, which I do generally. Unfortunately some things are thrown out there to cause that reaction, and when they get it, it escalates.

Part of the posts I do is purely Devil’s Advocate just to let people challenge their beliefs or form a solid ground for having them. I usually do this in the contraction discussions because I think fanhood is great but so isn’t some rationality or impartiality. I’m a fan of teams that have had hard times and lost it all when it mattered most, I feel a fan should be humble and sometimes, I think, the tone comes out the way it does because being humble helps you appreciate what you have that much more.

I think you are fine over here, you just need to ignore some posts

I actually enjoy discussing stuff with you BD34. You can come off as having a very strong opinion sometimes but I think its actually good to have different opinions on different things with a little humor sprinkled in. Im like you, if I see an opinion that is really way off, it annoys me a lot but instead of responding I guess the best thing to do is just ignore it and save your discussions for more meaningful conversations.

i thought u were mean

well not mean but aggressivly kinda forceful if you get me but we talked and established just a difference of opinion. Some people just see it once or twice and write u off as someone whos mean but in ur defence alot of people make comments without facts.

An idea to solve this could be make different types of fanposts like trade discussions/ideas, reviews and previews, fantasy, playoffs and thoughts/factless opinions. Just an idea but that way at least we can kinda put the facts on one side, crazy stories on the other and opinions or ideas on the other.

my first season watchin most games in a season and bein on this and i enjoyed the vast range of thoughts found on this which i mostly dont like but are true. thanks i understand basketball much better….. to bad about my poor grammer haha

A lot of us here frequent TDS. A lot also don’t. We should be encouraging for the purists to sign up an account and joining in the discussion. When everyone is just mindlessly demeaning to other posters, you’re doing the very opposite.

Things would just be a lot better if we all got along, to some extent cause I know that’s impossible. Disagreeing with someone is one thing, completely tearing apart someone is another.

Question

Is it wrong to call our people? Is that considered an insult? I am the type of person who calls people out for being wishy washy, hypocritical, unreasonable, or just straight up wrong. Just because some people are sensitive to the truth because they can’t handle it does not make it an insult. Those are the people that start shit with me for keeping it real and throw the first punch. They know who they are. Just like BD34 said above, when I retaliate I get all the blame I guess because I come off as blunt and some people just can’t take what’s real. I admit I have started the fire in the past but I realized it was wrong and I don’t do it anymore. What pisses me off is that I am the most insulted person on this board but when people start slinging shit at me no one bothers to say anything about it. And it looks like some posters get away with saying more shit than others. Where is the impartiality? It starts from the top. I believe some mods show favoritism to certain posters because they tend to agree on most issues. This must be corrected and evened out if we want to improve the quality of this blog. I’m sure I’m gonna get ridiculed for this but I’m used to it so bring it on.

Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.

It is wrong to call out people, yes.

You can disagree. If you think someone is being wishy-washy, then present an argument that questions their wishy-washiness. Just don’t call someone names. Five year olds do that.

I don't say anyone's name unless they acknowledge that I am talking about them

But you want to ignore that, right? Show me where it says not to call people out since you say it’s wrong. I do present my case when someone is being wishy washy. They will then get personal and I defend myself. You obviously “favor” anyone against me which is why you ignore my side of things. It’s all good man because I’m not here to make friends either. Calling People Out

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with calling people out. You can call people out without insulting them, like I did Monday or whenever. I wasn’t trying to be a douche to BD or Batman, just wanted to talk about it and say “I told you!”

There’s ways of talking about things and reminding people of things without being a jerk about it. Hell, BD and I are going to drink beer in DC if I ever make it that way.

Something to keep in mind

Most of the issues that I see resulting in the most hostility here are when people refuse to acknowledge that there are legitimate arguments on both sides of an issue. For example, sure its kinda weird that we traded for Thabeet and haven’t even played him. Its been pretty clear for a while that we have nothing to lose, so you would think that he’d get some playing time. But at the same time, he is still really raw, and why take the risk of having him cement bad habits by thrusting him into the fire too fast. There is no 100% clear answer, but some people refuse to acknowledge that.

On the other hand, people posting Scola and Bud for Howard trade suggestions need to be ripped.

It's easy and sometimes fun

to hide behind the cloak of anonymity. But we have to remember that there are people on the other side of the computer.

And a difference of opinion isn’t disliked; it’s encouraged, actually. That’s truly the reason I started coming to TDS instead of just reading other people’s posts on other sites. Someone would say something that I disagreed with but all the comments were either “you’re wrong” or “+1” with no explanations or follow up questions.

One of things I love here is that when I write something, I expect people to disagree. And so long as they deliver good points to counter my own, I’m willing to accept their argument even if my opinion doesn’t change.

As for raising a glass, I’m with you buddy. But there won’t be any trades if the CBA doesn’t get done. From everything I’ve read they’re expecting it to be worse than the NFL’s lockout.

by fanoflosingteams on Apr 13, 2011 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

No, it's not

but it does go a long way in a different sense. The Rockets are young. Other teams are old. Say we take a season off or if it’s protracted. Suddenly in 2012-2013 when there’s a full season the Spurs will seem even more ancient. Kobe and Steve Nash will be almost out the door, and the Mavs are suddenly Spurs old.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

by ak2themax on Apr 13, 2011 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

That's an interesting point.

I also have this theory about older players that says they can keep it going as long as they’re going.

That is, as long as Nash is healthy enough, on his workout and eating plan and actually playing in the NBA, he’ll be just fine until he hits “the cliff”. But if he takes a year off, its over, even if he might have had three years left under his present circumstances.

Or more succinctly – staying at a professional level at an advanced playing age is almost infinitely easier than returning to that level after significant time off.

Closer to home, I think it’s next season or never for Yao, whereas Greg Oden probably has 2-3 more shots.

Anyway, I understand, I can be a pretty charming guy too, but sometimes the little something that tells people that, really, deep down, you’re just kidding, doesn’t translate to the internets.

I have a small group of friends

that I generally watch basketball games with. Well, when I lived in Houston at least. After a few pitchers, the argument begins, and they are pretty heated. But all in all, it’s pretty entertaining.

For example, my friend thinks Nene is a better CENTER than Pau Gasol. And we argue about this constantly. Somehow, it always comes up. Another one is he would rather have Derek Fisher over Deron Williams in the finals, doesn’t really matter who the other players are.

Anyway, I tend to get into pretty heated arguments with random people at bars when it comes to the NBA and basketball in general. In the 08-09 season, when we played the Lakers in the 2nd round, some dude had the audacity to come to my bar wearing a Kobe jersey. Big mistake. He got booed all the way out the door, it was great.

Well, talking crap with friends is one thing,

and I’d hope some of here have talked about the Rockets and hung out virtually long enough that a certain amount of that is fine, and often a good idea.

But it’s also difficult online. I work pretty hard to let people know I’m saying stuff with what amounts to a friendly smile, (except when I’m not) since it often just doesn’t translate.

Had to look that one up, since I'd never heard it before

when I saw who it was, I realized why.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

That's an excellent quote. I'll have to store it with some of my other favorites.

This one is attributed variously, but I like the story that has it with the 71st Highlanders at Waterloo about to charged by Napoleons heavy cavalry and a prayer is suggested. -

“Lord, for what we are about to receive, make us truly grateful.”

I don't think it would ever be an issue,

if people wouldn’t take things personal on here. Yes, that is impossible.. But please if I insult, offend, or put you down, I am greatly sorry.
Fact of the matter is we are all a bunch of losers who should probably find more productive hobbies or constructive things to do with spare time. But like guy said before, everyone here wants to see a winner in Houston (I try to think). However, make no doubt about it, disagreements make this blog great. I mean a city where the sports teams are mediocre at best, what do you expect, all of us to sing kumbaya?
I think the moderators do a great job, and I enjoy reading all of the write-ups.

Funny how Memphis' ****-up has become Houston's obsession

my worthless two cents...

I have really started cutting back on reading and posting when all these fights and insults fly back and forth.
I am sure that I am guilty of stating strong opinions at lots of times (particularly about Pierce, Dallas, communists/vegetarians, etc)
But honestly, scrolling through post arguments where people are constantly bickering about people not responding to the earlier complaints, not using logic, being an idiot, etc… is just a waste of my time and I don’t want to read it.

Respectfully disagree and also ignore posts or comments you don’t agree with or even hate. There is no need to make this a site to fight over. Principled disagreement is fine, citing facts or impressions is fine. Saying someone is personally stupid, irrational, etc…does no one any good. I dont care how someone really doesn’t mean to be insulting etc…but I just don’t need that in my life.

Well said.

Life really is too short for internet bickering.
