Possible FA Target?

Well, as much as I loved seeing the Grizzles and Shane Battier beat the Spurs yesterday, the news seems to be getting better. ESPN is reporting that Zach Randolph has agreed to a new deal worth $71 million with $66 million guaranteed. This deal along with Rudy Gay's monster contract last summer ($80 million over 5 years) and Conley's large contract extension just before the season started ($45 million over 5 years) make it less likely that Marc Gasol sticks around in Memphis.

Gasol will be a restricted free agent, but I imagine there will be teams willing to pay more for his services than Memphis will be able to offer. His availability also probably depends on how the new CBA looks. Memphis will probably do what they can to keep Gasol since they have such a thin front court, but with so much money locked up in other places, I would bet that he has become much more available than before Randolph's contract.

Last year Gasol averaged 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds along with 1.6 blocks in 35+ minutes a night. His production has dropped a tad this year, but Gasol continues to be a solid contributor for the Grizzles and his presence down low has a lot to do with the Grizzles recent success (not to downplay other Grizzles elevated performances, but Gasol's play has also been crucial). He also has been fairly reliable, which has to be a top priority when looking at FA prospects for the Rockets given their awful recent history with injuries. He has played three season and has played in 82, 69, and 81 games respectively. I would love to snatch up Gasol and solidify our frontline. I haven't seen him play enough to know how great he is defensively or how he would fit in Adelman's offense handling the ball in the high post, but if his skills are anything close to his older brother's, I think he could fit that role nicely.

What do you guys think? Would Gasol be worth it or would he be considered settling and more of a short term answer that won't make us that much better? Let me know what you think in the poll and explain your answers below. Go Rockets

he fits perfectly

before you posted, i’m the one who have a wishful thinking about acquiring marc gasol.
he’s tall, tough, reliable downlow, and most importantly.. can replace my friend.. brad miller.

as for the coaching change, i would be glad to pull the trigger. please try to develop hasheem thabeet. common! he’s better than dikembe mutombo at the end of his career (before he was injured) hasheem got an offensive game. all he needs is toughness and basketball IQ and it can develop through playing him.

get a defensive coach please! they are 23 in worst in defending but 3rd in offense.
play the young guns! look at the way coach popovich rotates his players.
he gives the rookies to shine. look at gary neal. matt bonner is also doing his job, to shoot threes. we don’t need another time when houston players are gassed by playing 40 minutes!!! that’s too much! that’s minutes for superstars like lebron james and dwayne wade. this team needs fresh legs to be effective! they are run and gun type so fresher legs to pressure the ball.

i believe in this team. there were times when the team experiences lack strategy. look at the way the coach in new orleans are doing. a good defensive coach but their team i think won’t pass second round because they are playing the lakers (regardless their win in first game)

who’s with me?

gasol would be great

He’s young-ish, solid 7-1 quality starting c who can bang around and lives in the low post.
While certainly no dwight, he’d go a long way to shoring up our biggest concern.
With the pieces we have now, to include a guy like marc would mean a top 5 seed and solid hopes for legitamate contention given cohesion and continued development of roster depth.
A signing like that would realy put us one move away from elite.

Randolphs new Contract opens up a whole new possibility with Gasol

With close to $56 Mil already guranteed next year…how much can the Grizzlies match for Gasol. They dont have any centers locked in for next year. They also need a back up SF. They can keep the option on Ish Smith for about 800K and that takes care of their back up PG.

If you are the Rockets, much do you offer Gasol and for how long?

Memphis' Situation

I don’t really know how they will proceed. With such a thin front court and so much money locked up in three players, I don’t really know ho they will fill in the holes. Starting center and a backup. Battier will be a FA. How great would it be to see the Rockets get Gasol and then beat the Grizz for a playoff spot next year?

The Rockets will have a busy off-season as well

Our alomst locked in positions:
PG: Lowry, Dragic
SG: Martin, Lee
PF: Scola, Patterson

Everyone else I think can be on the block to improve our roster in the C and SF position. This means Chase, Miller, Hill and T-Will. Thabeet will be a project on the roster and Chuck will get resigned, and im sure Yao will get resigned as well.

by Texas08 on Apr 18, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, Under Contract Rockets as follows

PG: Lowry, Dragic (TO)
SG: Martin, Lee
SF: Bud (TO), TWill
PF: Scola, Patterson
C: Miller, Thabeet, Hill

That makes 9 players under contract with 2 additional players with team options that will most likely be picked up. If no trades are made the Rockets have 4 roster spots available and 3 draft picks currently.

Morey has expressed interest in bringing back Hayes and Yao. We still will need a backup SF or SG if Lee slides up and plays SF.

Just a quick picture of the Rockets going forward.

hayes dissappeared from your list

He lis a lock to be resigned. He’s a perfect back-up c/pf on a championship team wit his d and passing. Now that is offense has emerged he is no longer a liability in any sense.

Getting a center

and hopefully a healthy Yao back gets Hayes moved to power forward, where he will even do better. Scola will most likely be moved with the emergence of Patterson, but we should be able to get a proven starting defensive small forward that we need.

Yeah there was no way Randolph and Gasol

were going to be back next year. And it’s not like they are going to try and trade Gay, his health this season killed his value. I think Marc would be a great piece to the puzzle here in Houston. I think Marc could get a multi-year deal worth 8-12 million per.

Funny how Memphis' ****-up has become Houston's obsession

Gasol is a good fit, but

i rather get a more defensive center like Dalembert. Or maybe a Jordan from the Clips.Gasol has a nice inside game, but we already score 105 a game, we score with ease, plus i don’t see him scoring that much more then dalembert. He only averaged 12 points a game but is a better passer. It’s just how much will dalembert want?

Safest fanpost in the history of TDS.

This board has had a raging hard on for Gasol all year. What’s Memphis’s financial situation like? If we’re entering a new CBA that might screw up this little love-fest as well. If a Franchise Tag comes up it’ll be difficult, if contracts can get negotiated entering the new CBA it could be difficult.

There’s no way of knowing if anyone’s a possible target until we know what our financial structure will be. I’d enjoy Gasol but I’d still rather us not focus so much on free agency but more so building loyalty, drafting, and young talent.

It'd be interesting to see what kind of franchise tag NBA would come up with

especially salary wise, the salary disparity is pretty high at a position like the centers.

by NVP on Apr 18, 2011 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

My big thing is just that there's too many questions about salary structure

for any of us to actually know. I mean, clearly Memphis is setting themselves up for some difficult financial times but I truly feel like anything is in play but Memphis isn’t disqualified. A lot is made of throwing money at guys but not much is made of individual integrity like if they decide to stay with the team that made them what they are.

I think the Gasol situation is a little different

because unlike all the recent stars that have been jumping ship or forcing trades, Gasol might want to stay in Memphis, but still get forced out due to the financial irresponsibility of the Grizzles front office unless he’s willing to make much less than what the market would determine for his services. The Grizzles may have made the trade to acquire his rights and have definitely made him who he is, but they’ve created a situation that potentially makes him much more available.

I don’t know how I feel about a franchise tag, but I would like to see something done to protect smaller market teams from everyone just leaving and keep stars in the city that drafted them.

by jroberts5 on Apr 18, 2011 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

The CBA situation indeed presents much uncertainty

and I didn’t fail to ignore that, that’s why Gasol is still a ‘potential’ target. You’re right, there’s the possibility that Gasol will be retained through some new medium setforth in the new CBA, which we won’t know until much later unfortunately.

With the Rockets stuck in the late lottery, mid 1st round, I feel like it’s much more likely that the Rockets find what they’re looking for in FA. especially this year when the prospects are so thin.

What do you mean by building loyalty?

by jroberts5 on Apr 18, 2011 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

It's certainly possible for us to pursuit a guy like Gasol or Jordan

If not and short to mid-term contract to Dalembert or Chandler is also likely

by NVP on Apr 18, 2011 1:25 PM CDT reply actions

I would love to have Gasol

If we get him we would be top 5 in the west for sure.

by Rockets4LIFE on Apr 18, 2011 2:24 PM CDT reply actions

I doubt the Grizzlies can afford Gasol,

so we have a shot at him.

Houston has invested into this year's draft

Day by day freshman phenoms are coming back for their sophomore year. There’s a couple overseas guys but that’s always a crapshoot. If there’s an opportunity to get a guy like Gasol, you have to go for it.

Funny how Memphis' ****-up has become Houston's obsession

I'd take a foreigner

They are as much of a crap shoot as American born players. Besides, foreigners seem to have more skill and basketball IQ. Athletic guys are always fun to watch but most of them seem to rely on that throughout their careers. When it deteriorates they fall off the map.

Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.

by batman713 on Apr 18, 2011 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, some of them seem to have more skill and IQ

But they’re usually finesse players who play facing the basket. I’ve always preferred a strong, post-up player who’s going to maul people in the paint.

All right, later dudes. S you in your A’s, don’t wear a C, and J all over your B’s.

i strongly agree in getting deandre jordan

he is a defensively tall center. he plays a lot of energy and that’s the reason why the rockets should get him. majority of this team plays a dazzling amount of energy in each game. plus, there was a post before that deandre jordan would love to go to this team.

a great upgrade at C who can defend well, an inside presence, shows a ton of potential, and he’s young for his age. he haven’t reached his ceiling yet. i believe he should be the starting center despite the return of the ever unhealthy, fragile yao ming. yao doesn’t deserve to start because another starting job would mean-another injury. better trade him now for his potential of getting more or getting good picks.

i agree, change for the better eventhough it takes away one of good players in this team. this team needs DEFENSE!!!!! that should be the prioirity.

scola should stay but he should not be playing in end games because i’m tired of seeing bigmen to abuse him everytime they attack him. these big men score lots of points inside coz they know there’s no inside presence. if rockets would trade him, they must get a better player and also i believe in that move as long as morey is here.

Strangely, Memphis just handed Z-Bo a big contract

4 year 71 million, I guess the owner is giving away money like he’s Marc Cuban

Strangely?

I always thought they would attempt to extend Gasol first

Since He is younger, plays a more scarce position and only been with Memphis.
