Dwight Howard won yet another Defensive Player of the Year award today. Congrats to him. Watching the press conference, I heard him thank former Rocket Dikembe Mutumbo for starting him off on the path of improving his defensive tenacity and presence.
Here is what I wanted to know from fellow Dreamshakers. Dwight Howard has just made history winning three straight defensive awards in a row. He will make the all-defensive 1st team and maybe win this award the next three years as well. I personally don't think he is doing anything special besides be the biggest player on the court. His athleticism allows him to challenge the shots as aggressively as he does and his length changes the opponent's flight of the ball. No, he is not keeping the ball in play nor is he as effective when a man his size is running post moves on him. I have always considered elite defenders as ones who could shut you down one on one as well as with help defense. Alot of us would probably say if Chuck Hayes were 6 inches taller, he would be even more dominant on the defensive end. Do any of you guys truly believe that Dwight Howard is that much a stud on the defensive end of the floor? Please prove it to me. I feel like in any other era, he would be lucky to even make the first team yet he may go down historically as the greatest defender of all time. My other question is how does he compare defensively to Dikembe and Hakeem Olajuwon when they played? Could he even hold their jock straps if he had permission?
