We won't have Shaq's fat @$$ to kick around anymore
Oh, Happy Day!
Shaquille O'Neal has announced his retirement.
Alas, I'm sure there will be another lazy, oversized 30 year old going on 13 to take his place...
/Team Kobe
All joking aside, Shaq was the last active member of the 1992 draft class. The same group that brought us Alonzo Mourning, Baby Jordan, Latrell Sprewell, Christian Laettner and some guy by the name of Robert Horry.

Good riddance
He should’ve retired a while ago.
Just because it's ridiculous to say he was better than Hakeem
1000 less blocks, 650 less rebounds and 1423 less steals than Hakeem. Only 2 to Hakeem’s 8 all defensive teams
Hakeem played 31 more games even though he played 18 seasons vs Shaq’s 21, retiring at similar ages
Shaq scored more points but also attempted 3631 more free throw than The Dream

and we are going to hear
How he was one of the best big men of all time all day today on espn.. then they make these stupid lists where in some fake universe shaq belongs on but Hakeem does not.

Dream>>>>>>Shaq
"Hakeem couldn't kick your ass cuz you were too
close kissin his!"- Sir Charles to Kenny Smith.
Hakeem is the best,
he did not have Dwayne Wade,Penny Hardaway, or Kobe Bryant. Shaq is just trying to take some attention from the finals.

Come on. I love Hakeem and all.
But Shaq was amazing. So much power. So agile when he was young. The most dominant player since Wilt. I would say he and Hakeem were on a similar level.
It’s a sad day that he’s retired.
Anyone who says Hardaway or Kobe carried Shaq is an idiot (not saying that anyone here is saying that).
To sum it up look at Hakeem's
competition in his day. Parish,Kareem,David Robinson,Ric Smits,Patrick Ewing, and Alonzo Mourning. During Shaq’s run with Kobe most if not all those centers were retired. In the playoffs he is going up against Dale Davis,Eric Dampier or an old Vlade Divac,or Scott Pollard it was just not the same amount of talent during alot of his era.

Genuis, read first before you
reply, but i guess all you can do is try to change around my statement, because you know it is true. Yes we remember how dominant Shaq was, and how he never could hit a free throw at the end of games. We know he is a hall of famer, but like i said hakeem carried the team for years without Kobe, or Wade type. And Penny before he got hurt was one of the best guards in the nba.And hakeem is only 6’10 and game was far more better then Shaqs. He had a shot, he was a pretty good free throw shooter, and had way more moves around the rim then Shaq.

definitely one of the most dominant centers
Of all time and colorful at that. I mean movies, rap albums, wrestling, wasn’t he at some point a cop? As far as the Hakeem comparison goes…. gotta go with olajuwon for the reasons you guys have mentioned. And let’s not forget about hack a shaq. I remember down the stretch of games he had to sit on the bench in crunch time before they created the intentional foul. Its unfortunate, but todays young nba fan will more remember him as an old guy who couldn’t hack it in the playoffs and an ex wife on vh1
Welcome to Houston Kevin McHale. Just remember "It was Minnesota" is no longer an excuse.

Shaq's prime is just below Hakeem's. He's one of the most dominant to play... and then he got fat.

I honestly think that...
Bynum or Cousins will take that “lazy, oversized 30 year old going on 13” position , in due time.
Hopefully he sticks around
Hopefully the Celtics keep him around. I think he’d do a great deal helping some of the younger players.
I always liked Shaq
He is always funny and I use to get a kick out of his interviews. Hakeem is better in my opinion, but Shaq is a first ballot hall of famer no doubt and I wish him well.

My Mount Rushmore of centers
is Dream, Wilt, Kareem and Shaq. This list isn’t in terms of most accomplished, or “greatest,” since Russell has to be on there, but just the four centers who were the best at basketball and whose games would translate across all eras. I think Dream was the most complete of all time, and the other three are clearly the next best options. Russell was great in his time, but I think a lot of that was his era. And don’t throw the championships at me, you don’t win 11 titles because of one player.
Bleeding red since 2004, when we changed our team colors. But only since then. It was an amalgamation of blue and pinstripes before that.
Honestly? Bill Russell doesn't hold a candle to
Kareem, Wilt, Hakeem, Shaq or hell even David Robinson. Dude was 6’8. I don’t care how much training you do and correct eating, that isn’t changing.
I can argue against Russell all day long that he’s not in the top 5 if you really, really compare players. And yes, he won 800 titles, in a league that they had caps on African Americans, only 8 teams and he played with like 9 other hall of famers. Oh, and the dude never scored.

When i try to separate the great players among great players....my criteria is
on which players excelled on BOTH SIDES of the ball. Shaq was one sided while Hakeem was two sided. Enough said.
Love how the argument always comes down to how many rings a player had
Because winning championships, IMO, is a team accomplishment.
That’s why Hakeem will always be a top C in my book. Although maybe because he did play a little PF they can’t really consider in a list of top C in history?

I agree with you for once
Because the O’Brian trophy stays with the team and not the player. Hakeem is the greatest individual center ever and that is the bottom line.
Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.
When did Hakeem play PF?
Even with Ralph he was the Center
