Better options besides Biedrins?

Better options besides Biedrins?

Star-divide

I know everybody wants A Center on our beloved Houston Rockets. The fact is I think everybody putting too much onto this off-season. Right now we have Hasheem Thabeet, Jorden Hill, Chuck Hayes, Donatas Motiejunas, All who can play the 5 spot. Now just like you here on TheDreamShake I would love A Center, But Andris Biedrins is not the answer you all is looking for. He lacks too much (Skills Vs Money) don't match up. I know you reading this and saying please get to the point and I will. I rather we give it time until A better center is available instead of rushing into it with one you will soon regret. When we signed Brad Miller everybody here was excited, But why? Miller never played Defence and was clearly at the end of his carrer (Yeah Yeah I Know Because Rick Right)Just saying there's Better options besides Biedrins And Way Better Than Thabeet.

With the exception of Nene (I’m not as high on him as some on this blog are, but he’s still a legit player), DJ, Dalembert, Marc Gasol, Biedrins and maybe Oden, the rest are just generic backups. Speights and Mohammed have both been solid offensive weapons for a while, but each is atrocious defensively. Hollins and Ajinca are just athletes and not basketball players, Gray and Fesenko are just big bodies but completely useless otherwise, I always think Elson is 80 years old, and Hawes just fucking sucks.

The only centers I think would be worth acquiring are Kaman (not great, but short contract and solid low-post scorer), DJ (young option but would be tough to get), Chandler (if we could put Cuban under a spell), Bogut (would take a lot to get him though), Gortat (take a lot to get him as well), Biedrins (maybe), Darko (kidding), and maybe a guy like Dalembert though he’ll want to go to a contender.

by Patrick Harrel on Jun 26, 2011 10:33 PM CDT reply actions

I actually disagree on Fesenko being just a big body

He’s no starter in the NBA, dont get me wrong, but he was pretty impressive in the playoff couple years ago. He was lost in the shuffle with Utah having a bunch of big guys, but I thought he could have been a solid backup given a chance

by NVP on Jun 27, 2011 4:05 AM CDT up reply actions

We have plenty of solid backups

Oden for sure.

He is injury laden. But that only means less teams will be interested which means a better deal for us. Why not take a chance on his talent and potential game changing abilities if it comes cheap? I mean, it’s not like he’s un-developed like Thabeet…just a thought

ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Roxbybirth on Jun 26, 2011 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

Because Yao has had multiple injuries

and injuries are basically why we are in this rebuilding state. We are already investing 5 mill on Thabeet who may never leave the d league, and you want to add 8 mill more for a player who can’t even play a season wihout getting hurt. Thats 13 mill can be used to get one way better center then both of those unproven guys. Hill is also a project and if Yao is able to get healthy please believe the Rockets wuld like to give him one last chance.

by since86rocketsfan on Jun 27, 2011 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

He never mentioned a price tag for Oden, so the 8 million figure is yours, not his.

The reason he goes with Oden is at Oden’s age his reco… nevermind, we’ve discussed this and I’m not sprinting into this wall again…

Oh yea u love Oden

and Przy, i think we can also get J Oneal, bring back Tmac so we can have the most injury prone team in history. Regardless how much he would get, the idea of adding another project at center who can’t stay off the IR list, just shows your great thinking. Its time to get a true center, not a pf/c player but a true one like Dalembert, maybe even Biedrins a starter not a project.

by since86rocketsfan on Jun 27, 2011 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Andris Biedrins hasnt been doing good for a

couple if seasons, with injury and has a bad contract, but at this point i might just settle for a 7 footer with some paint presence on both off and def side. If I could have it my way id set the wish list at
1.Marc Gasol
2.Deandre Jordan
3.Tyson Chandler
4.Nene
5.Samuel Dalembert
6.Andris Biedrins
7.Greg Oden
8.Maurice Speights
I know the top 4 have little chance of becoming houston rockets, but i can dream.
Maybe we get lucky and are able to snag one of them but right now our options are limited.

by FLASH94 on Jun 26, 2011 11:29 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I like this list.

Though I’d put Dalembert over Nene (we need central D more than anything else) and I’d put Speights over Oden, unless Oden came very cheaply. He’s great when healthy. That when is practically never.

In regards to your Miller reference in the post.

Miller was a good pick up if Yao stayed healthy. A guy to spell Yao some basic minutes and stretch the floor, once Yao went down the context of the signing completely changed, so please, let’s not imply that the move would have gotten approval if it happened last season.

As far as all the available centers, Biedrins has come off some injury and some other issues but he’s still young, can be had “on the cheap” from Golden State, and he presents a far more viable and realistic grab than the board going nuts over Gasol and Jordan.

In a way, I would like us to offer Jordan stupid money

assuming we had the cap space. I think the clips would match, but it would be fun to watch them pony up. I am thinking they think that the posturing about matching might make folks stay out of the bidding. Also, it might help our image on the FA front as a whole. And then again, they might not match. You never know…

by makinmajik on Jun 27, 2011 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

It's the Jazz/Blazers game for Milsap a couple years ago.

They offered a dumb amount of money to Milsap and Utah matched it. It’s restricted them and they wound up dumping big salary players for it. The downside is if the other team doesn’t play your game you wind up on the hook for an extended deal at big bucks and kill your flexibility. If the other team matches they screw themselves over. It’s kind of like poison pill contracts in the NFL.

Exactly, it's a fine line

but I have an idea the kid has pretty serious upside. It would also make us a bit more credible in the free agent market in general. Trick is to structure the offer right. I don’t think 9 mil to him would be any worse than giving up players to GS and then paying 9 mil to Biedrins.

by makinmajik on Jun 27, 2011 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Addition by subtraction plays a huge role in Biedrins though.

We unclutter the roster rather than tacking more on to it, which often times yields better results than straight acquisition.

What about Jason Thompson?

he’s on a team who will probably be looking to start DeMarcus at C, and might not mind a veteran scoring PF, or even PPat to reunite them since they played well together there. i just think he is athletic and we could get him with a reasonable trade, am i wrong?

by BuckeyeBob on Jun 28, 2011 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Jason Thompson is not a a center

It’s why Sac keeps pair him up with a center or trying to acquire center. he’s more of a power forward, and not really a inside banger either as a power forward

by NVP on Jun 28, 2011 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

ESPN has him listed at C

i feel like he could step it up and play under the rim, i don’t think he’s really had the chance in SAC.

by BuckeyeBob on Jun 28, 2011 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he actually got pretty good minutes past couple years

listed as C arent always indicative of the way he plays

I even seen him getting slotted to SF in a good amount of sets, though he did bulk up last year to get more paint oriented

He’s a decent rebounder with his height and actually an above average offensive player, but not the best decision maker or defender.

Al Jefferson is available, Noah and Varajao, Derek Anderson, Fresenko, Aaron Gray, Channing Frye, Reggie Evans, Zaza…its plenty of backups that wouldnt hurt us once Chuck goes out the game…i think its moreso the coaching or WAS that kept us down. And Thabeet needs to be outta here…

by focuslja on Jul 4, 2011 12:41 PM CDT reply actions

So Thabeet does not deserve to have a chance?

That way of thinking makes NO SENSE for a REBUILDING TEAM. I am going to just leave it here because I will get banned for the things I will say to you.

Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.

by batman713 on Jul 4, 2011 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

well those who have the power to ban...DONT...

dont be so hostile…us rebuilding isnt the same as say the Pistons or NETs. We have a squad. We won 40+ games last season. We dont need to totally revamp the whole team. We may want to add a major piece which is cool but we already have the resources for that to take place. Our team is young. We have a new coach who although doesnt have the pedigee of Aldeman, isnt as stubborn as Aldeman either. Send Thabeet to the bench or to a team who wants his services. For his production, his contract is terrible. Get a pick or two. Use him in a trade package for the big man or SF we want so bad.

by focuslja on Jul 4, 2011 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

We've had "the pieces to make a major trade" for three years now, how's that worked out?

Anyone considering this team a team that will rebuild quickly needs to wake up and smell the coffee that when we hit shit or get off the pot time, we’re working on taking our dump. I hate to ruin your parade but you can’t simultaneously knock Thabeet then assume he’ll net anything in a trade. If he’s valueless to you, don’t act as though he’s valuable to others.

And I Quote

Send Thabeet to the bench or to a team who wants his services. For his production, his contract is terrible. Get a pick or two. Use him in a trade package for the big man or SF we want so bad.

On rebuilding teams, no one is untouchable. We have a few pieces that I would keep but Thabeet can be sacraficed. Someone will be sacraficed. Its no way around it. Unlike most rebuilding teams, we have a pretty solid young core and a great group of talent. But in order to make it to the next level, someone has to go. Scola? Martin? Dragic? We arent at a level where we have to totally start from scratch but its time to make a decision. Instead of stockpiling Fs and PGs and make a move. Of course for at least a B+ center (our biggest need) we would have to give up one of our high potential players or a center in return for compensation. I say with Thabeets contract, it would be a dump and its not like we drafted him or we will miss what he brought to the table…

essentially a 5 million dollar expiring contract if you don’t pick up his contract . WIth the amount of high profile free agents in 2012 as compared to 2011, his value is in his contract, instead of his ability. Jared Jeffries 2.0, just like I said after the trade.

-TCWIR paraphrased

by BD34 on Jul 5, 2011 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Assuming there is gonna be a season

Thabeet has one chance, one season to show truly remarkable progress to get his option picked up. just form a purely cost stand point, anything short of 15-20 minutes of solid play night in and night out makes it really tough to justify a 8 million contract(I’d argue for 8million the guy should be a solid starter), and letting the option expire and renegotiate a reasonable contract rarely happens. We didnt give him the initial contract, but now it’s pretty much becomes an ultimatum of sorts

one could argue that Trailblazer took a similar risk on Oden, but Oden was regarded as a fairly advance player coming into the league, and Portland has been with him since he was drafted, used him fairly confidently as a rotational player even starter before his injuries, they have a better idea of what Greg Oden is and how he is than anyone else. We now have a new coaching staff to hire and and new regime, in many way is another do over for Thabeet, but also a shorter leash. Finch worked with him in NBDL, but Finch also dont get to coach big mans often.

This lockout is not doing Thabeet any favors either

by NVP on Jul 4, 2011 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

The Rockets need to pick up any options BEFORE the season

This applies to all the 09ers: Thabeet, Hill, Flynn, TWill. So they’re not going to pick up Thabeet’s option. Nor Flynn’s. Not sure about Hill/TWill.

If Thabeet performs, the Rockets will simply resign him. The Rockets will have capspace and Dwight Howard’s probably not begging to come here. But if DH does for some reason, then I’m sure Morey will eagerly help Thabeet pack his bags out of here.

by baubo on Jul 6, 2011 1:58 AM CDT reply actions

good call

That simplify the matter a bit, though the Hill and T-will option combine is only 8, 9 million, that’s a lot easier to swallow

Okafor

put some of those ‘assets’ to use. If the hornets recognise that CP3’s on the way out they might be looking to offload okafor. His contracts pretty big but, i suppose youd have to chuck in thabeet even though i dont think we should give up on him yet. hes a big body blocks shots, rebounds, finishes around the ring. We could also use someone to knock down some buzzer beaters haha.
