Our Missing Piece is in Utah?
After reading the season projections and thinking about how we really need a center, I can't help but think of Al Jefferson of the Utah Jazz. Jefferson has been dealt an unlucky hand time and time again playing for perennial losers and when he finally got a chance to play for a decent (albeit non-championship) team in Utah, the team fell apart, with no fault of Jefferson.
Jefferson would be a decent rim protector, but on offense, he is elite, as one of the only low post players in the league who commands a double team. Last season, without Deron Williams for half the season, Jefferson put up 19 and 10 with career highs in assists and blocks per game. He averaged something like 23 points a game in March and April. And I think we could get him for a reasonable price, since the Jazz have so many forwards and centers on their roster. I almost think we could get Jefferson for Thabeet, a pick and salary cap savings.
If Jefferson doesn't work out, it's no big deal. He only has two years left on his contract. And one of Jefferson's biggest supporters in the NBA is our new head coach, Kevin McHale. I think McHale could help Jefferson reach his potential here in Houston. A team with Kevin Martin and Al Jefferson? Yes, please. Thoughts? Am I crazy in thinking that we could get him? Do we want him?

Wolves fan.
He’s great on the low block, can defensive rebound and is okay as a man to man defender. On the flip side he’s over-priced for his impact on the game, horrible at PnR defense and not a good passer out of double teams. Liked him as player when he was here, but I’m sure your help defense would struggle with Scola and Jefferson as your starters.

I'd pass
He wouldn’t help our greatest need which is a strong defensive center. He’s probably a better rebounder than our favorite Argentinian, but he’d be redundant on a team with Scola. He’s a horrific team defender, is an injury risk (though he’s been better in recent years), and just isn’t good enough to merit the double-barreled cost of paying him his 8 figure salary and giving the Jazz what they’d want for him.

No Big Al unless you offered the farm to the Jazz
A player I would like to get is Greg Monroe. I would probably take Rip’s bad contract to get him. Monroe and Patterson Front Court would do nicely in 2-3 years. Who would Pistons want? I don’t know but I think they would like to take back less salary.

Why would you have to offer the farm to the Jazz for Al Jefferson?
I think they got him for Kosta Koufos and 2 2nd round picks because Minnesota needed to clear time for Kevin Love. Seems like a similar situation with Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter now.
I think you would have to give up the farm to get Greg Monroe, who is probably the Piston’s best and most coveted player at the moment.

I don't see a need for Monroe
He’s a decent big man prospect, but crappy on defense. He wouldn’t be worth the King’s ransom the Pistons would want.

Monroe 6th in league in FG% and 7th in the league in Off.reb last season
1.5 steals and a crappy 0.6blks per 27mins. You don’t think we will improve?

He's a good offensive prospect
But he’s an absolutely horrible defender. He gets pushed around like a shopping cart on that side. Given the extreme price they’d likely demand for him, it wouldn’t be worth it.

1st rounders not 2nd rounders (Jazz used up 14M$ trade exception)
Do you think Al might slow the offense too much with a guy like Lowry at the point? Don’t get me wrong I like big Al’s numbers.

I'll pass.
Would cost too much to get.

I agree
If it were up to me, I would try to trade Scola and or Martin in order to get good picks in the draft or good young talent for the future.

As much as I wanted us to trade both Martin and Scola for picks in this year's draft,
I’m glad we didn’t. This year’s draft was pathetic.
Only problem is the both of them may not have another excellent season like they did last one.
Hopefully their production doesn’t drop off, esepcially for Scola. His age is already unattractive as it is.

We don't need him we have Thabeet...
Hasheem will soon be performing like a poor man’s Mutumbo and our C problem will finally be answered. (Not my words)
Wanted: Cornerback, Closer, and Center
No one mentions Thabeet anywhere on this page
But yet you just seem to have to find any way possible to bring him up. You better hope he does bad or else you will look very, very stupid.
Me against the world is a mismatch in my favor.
I'm sure we could work something out.
We’ve got to shed some bigs somehow. Jefferson’s an absolute stud on offense in the low post, but in help defense he’s a liability. For the right compensation, I’d be willing to deal.
Go Buffalo Bills, Utah Jazz, and Arkansas Razorbacks
You're definitely not crazy for thinking this
It’s something that I have thought about and I think he would be a great fit in Houston. I couldn’t agree with you more about Mchale, I think big Al would elevate his game to an elite level with his guidance. I would love to see this deal get done, and with the familiarity, it’s not far fetched.
One thing I dislike about Jefferson is his effort defensively. He gets lazy during certain times of the game. I think he’s a below average to average rim protector, but it’s something he can improve at. I’m not familiar with his ability passing the ball, and obviously if McHale wants to run a similar system to Rick’s that’s an important facet to the offense. But this is how I see it. I can compare big Al’s career somewhat to Zach Randolph’s. I know they aren’t the exact same player at the same position. But Zach was a part of some organizations where management and coaching held him back. He found new life in Memphis, and his play elevated to another level. When and if this stoppage ends and free agency/trades begins, I would expect Al to be rumored, and Houston to be one of the teams.
Wanted: Cornerback, Closer, and Center
Take Your Pick
If you want an immediate fix i say go with Emeka Okafor. With CP3’s pending departure i think he will come pretty cheap and he is a shot blocking specialist and someone who can lock down the paint if you just are wanting to get into the playoffsthis year.
On the other hand, looking towards the future i suggest 4 options, either:
1-stick with what we have and hope Mchale sparks something inside them
2-load up on this years draft picks which is looking to be very promising compared to the last few years, looking at Andre Drummond or Anthony Davis (if he shaves his monobrow)
3-Greg Oden, offer him enough to get him out of Portland cause i still believe he has what it takes to become a dominant centre in this league if he gets on the court.
4- And finally a little fantasy of mine. Trade everything except either K-Mart or Patterson for Cp3 or Dwight Howard, then hope that we can lure the other in Free Agency. There was an article a while back saying it was possible financially, and i can see it actually working.
These are thoughts i have had for a while, please give me your opinions……
All these guys are going to be a year older and Jefferson has never done anything this team has needed.
Case closed.
My beingadick-butnotbeinganannoyingdick skills, they're impressive.
