The problem with the NBA giving the fans the power to decide who starts in the all-star game is that it gives the small market stars little to no chance to make it.

You know, he doesn’t play in Corpus Christi…

Seriously though this guy knows his shit.

4th largest city in the USA.

Only top 10 city to grow every year of the great recession.

Small market.

It's pathetic.

Houston is one of the great cities this country has to offer but is is considered a small market by ignorant people. Just sad.

Houston is a big market team that plays like a small market team.

It really doesn't.

Ima let you finish because you’re a youngster, but the history of the Rockets is not one of irrelevance. Only two other teams (maybe 3) teams have more winning seasons in the last 20 years. This is a proud and generally successful franchise that’s had the misfortune of of a longish run of stars who couldn’t quite get it done, mainly because of injury.

Just as importantly, I think,

the ownership doesn’t treat it like a small-market team, either. Alexander spends money. You can take issue with whether or not that money has been wisely spent (Patrick brought up Matt Maloney last night), but from bringing in Pippen in ’99 to paying the luxury tax basically every year for the last decade, the team spends money.

Contrast that with the Astros, who sold off half their players in the early ‘90s because Drayton didn’t want to spend any more money than he had to, and he just signed Bagwell and Biggio to big deals (I imagine that with Kenny Lofton and Caminiti on the team in ’95 and ’96, the Astros would have gotten back to the playoffs a little quicker than they did), and who generally refused to spend any more money than he absolutely needed to up until roughly 2004 (conveniently after Billy Wagner called him out for it in the press and was then promptly traded).

Why, oh why, did you have to bring up the Astros

The pain! Oh, the wretched pain!

I agree with both you Xiane. The Rockets are anything but a small market team in any sense besides national media coverage. We’re being treated as the forgotten middle child in Texas right now because of Dallas’ and San Antonio’s success over the past seven years. We’ve been covered a fair amount before those teams rise; we just happen to be in a lull because we don’t have the stars we used to have.

Fan votes have been a problem for a while now

When I see Westbrook, Lowry, and Ellis out of the top three I just gotta shake my head and say to myself, either the NBA drones are messing with the results or fans are stupid fucking idiots. I think it’s a little of both.

Anybody remember when T-Mac and Yao were still being selected as top vote recipients when still recovering from their injuries. Both Kobe and Dwight could have also been hurt this season and it wouldn’t have mattered, they’d have gotten their votes from the league authorized drones.

Fan votes should still be tallied, but should only count as a small percentage towards a larger total of votes coming from coaches and pro basketball analysts. I can’t believe it’s even still being discussed. I’m tired of even thinking about how messed up the all-star voting is – regardless of if Rockets get in or not, there are a lot of deserving players throughout the league who get passed up and it really sucks.

addendum to my post above

I believe that Kobe and CP3 are certainly deserving of their votes as the top two Western guards, but behind them, in a fair and just world (which we do live in, but have flawed systems preventing it from functioning fairly) I’d expect Westbrook, Lowry, and Ellis to follow. Rubio’s a great talent, but needs to improve a lot before making it as all-star, and Nash is nearing the end of that high plateau he’s been on for the last 8 to 10 years.
The league likes the market Rubio appeals to, his flashy assists illicit oohhs and awwes, as does Nash, a familiar name with everybody around basketball, he’s a “safe” pick.
Ellis recently had his name dragged through some dirt, as did Lowry so their image is a little tarnished going in to voting – I suppose that plays a factor with the league not wanting them in the top three. Westbrook fights with team-mate Durant from time to time, so that puts him in a negative light too. Still, it doesn’t seem to prevent the adulterous Kobe Bryant from getting in, so….??? So, among Westbrook, Lowry, and Ellis is the true third and fourth guard, even if the idiots who are voting and handling the votes don’t realize it.
