Don't look now, but we are in the 8th seed position

I know this is very early in the season and we have been here before only to flame out late in the season. I for one fully expected to have a miserable early season and round into shape after the All Star Break. It is early and we will get a much better feel for this in the next few games, but the team might be way ahead of that schedule.

For the sake of argument, lets say we do manage to slip into the post season. It means no draft picks, (unless we trade for one or buy one), but it also means we are getting some serious mileage out of the players we have. If that's the case, what do we do from there.

If you look at our starters, it is hard to see where we can go for a serious upgrade that is both possible and realistic. Not that there aren't better players, but from a value standpoint it is hard to imagine much improvident. The 5 is set. I think that is likely the best move the team has made so far as bang for the buck goes. Asik has exceeded all my expectations and it is still early. Patterson seems hellbent on keeping his job and Parsons would be tough to improve on right now. If Lin continues to improve and can get his left hand to work I think we can reasonably expect to be set at the guards for a while.

So what happens if our starters continue to improve and we get a reasonable amount of production from the kids at the end of the bench. By reasonable I mean DMo gets into the rotation at the 4 and Morris or Jones fills the 3 spot off the bench. If we do end up without a pick, we will still have enough cap space to sign 1 or 2 players to add punch to the second unit and there are guys out there that could be had.

For the sake of argument again, let's say that we pick up Randy Foye to spell The Beard so that his minutes don't grind him into the floor. The kid lit us up pretty well last night and is a good option on offense. I think we could get him and have enough space left to sign a point to back up Lin if that is an issue that does not work itself out.

All in all, I think it is very reasonable to think that with minimal tinkering next summer, we will be in position to start challenging the current powers that be, especially considering they will be getting older and we should be getting better. Considering where we were not too long ago, I am quite pleased with the job DM and the rest of the office has done.

Please feel free to explain just how delusional you think my opinions are in the comments. After all, time will tell.
