I think

We have 1 missed shot, and three turnovers in the first four possessions.

But they rely on him to give them quality production

Which isn’t right. He’s like a way less effective Chuck Hayes in that respect.

You can be less effective than Hayes

and still be very effective. Dude shoots >40% from three and is a decent-to-good defender on the perimeter. Think of him as Battier without the elite defense but a much etter shooter.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 1, 2012 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

That's why I said "way" less effective

When I don’t know what I’m talking about, I like to speak in broad yet vague lingo. Makes me seem smarter than I truly am.

yeah, I get that

I just really disagree that he’s “way less effective.” He’s a good player. He’s only way less effective, I think, if you buy WoW’s stuff that Chuck is a total superstar.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 1, 2012 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

I think you're underrating the importance of defense for a bench forward like Bonner

He’s not going to put up a lot of points (except very occasionally) and he’s a defensive liability when he’s on the court.

My heart has been poisoned

The last two years of this team has taught me a terrible lesson: If houston loses a lead at any point, that’s game.

When the spurs went up for the first time in the game, I turned to my friend and said “That’s game.” I played it off as though I was kidding, but I wasn’t. This team has no margin for error. If they don’t keep a cushion throughout, they’re doomed.

Basically, I fully expect every game from now on to be a Rockets blowout that turns into a Rockets loss. If you have a 5 minute scoring drought every game, you’re gonna have to perform pretty effing well the other 43 minutes.

by DUNOTS on Feb 1, 2012 10:01 PM CST reply actions

by BuckeyeBob on Feb 1, 2012 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

well,

all research I’ve seen has shown that the “hot hand” theory is total bullshit when it comes to individual players — there’s no correlation between making a shot (or a series of shots) and making the next shot.

So it seems unlikely that it would be true on the team level. Shit just happens.

The Rockets faced one of the best offenses in the NBA at their home and got jobbed by the refs. That explains tonight’s “collapse.”

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 1, 2012 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

oh and the Mavs' win wasn't a huge fluke or anything

they were almost +5 points/possession last year. They were a good team. Good teams can win in the playoffs, and if they can win in the playoffs, they can win a championship.

That a few comeback wins were involved isn’t something surprising. That shit happens all the time. A comeback from a huge deficit is likely from a good team.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 1, 2012 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

That's true

But there really is a propensity to collapse in the 3rd / 4th quarters and lose their offense for minutes at a time. The D on this team isn’t good, but their offense gets more and more spotty as well. I guess it’s to be expected from a team that likes threes.

McHale is still figuring out rotations and lineups, I guess. If he figures it out, versatility and depth will be an amazing asset in this season. If he doesn’t, this will keep happening. Good teams with good coaches are gonna keep coming out of the half with changes that stymie Houston.

I'm shocked really, I just can believe the reffing in that game

We did play poor d in the 3rd, which happens when you’re afraid to breathe on Duncan lest a foul is called, and scola showed some serious issues when we should’ve been able to count on him. The person I’m most angered with is McHale. We could’ve really used Bud tonight to help put some points on the board, but he severely limited his time, and he showed no emotion at those foul calls. If you don’t challenge a ref on a call or 2 they wont have any qualms on continuing their calls. A little emotion might’ve stifled the free foul give away in the 4th

I just got finished watching it on dvr

what the heck…I can’t even explain it. The refs were awful but the Rockets just can’t get consistent play. Once Dalembert left the floor, Spurs were scoring at will.

by twinkilling0303 on Feb 1, 2012 10:59 PM CST reply actions

Probably so

but this team also lacks the ability to step on throats, never really been able to do it.

by twinkilling0303 on Feb 1, 2012 11:13 PM CST up reply actions

So, to be 100% accurate on what I can garner from this game thread:

The Rockets can blow a large lead and it’s entirely due to the refs.
The refs force the Rockets to take and miss bad shots.
The refs arbitrarily lopped points off of Houston’s massive lead.
The Rockets are in no way responsible or accountable for their play.
The Rockets are not required by basketball law to make any form of adjustments during the game.
Due to this lack of culpability every Rockets win is a mandate from the referees.

So I guess the inherently logical thing to ask is, are all Rockets wins due to poor officiating as well since all of our losses seem to reflect nothing upon the basketball team we choose to hail as ours?

Maireann croí éadrom i bhfad.

by BD34 on Feb 2, 2012 6:15 AM CST reply actions

No, but in this one, the refs directly contributed to the Spurs gaining momentum.

I’m not sure how you are supposed to win when you literally are not allowed to touch Duncan. Go ahead, watch it. Duncan is allowed to clear out with his elbow every time, yet we get fouls called on us for touching him.
Also, I believe the spurs took 3 charges in the fourth quarter. On two of them, you could sit there and watch the defenders’ feet move. Horrible calls.
In the second half, Dragic gets slapped on the face. What happens? Turnover, Houston with the added fun of hearing the announcers talk about how they found that quite funny!
We lost this game. You can’t say the refs forced us to lose. On the offensive end, most of our problems were our own. But defensively, yes, I would say the refs made quite an impact there.

My stance on it all is that you still play the game.

Reffing can be bad but if you execute your offense and the refs aren’t taking the ball away from you and tallying your points for the opposing team you have to adjust. Refs have been in the game for quite some time and just because you don’t like their work doesn’t mean it’s a new concept to adjust to the whistles. We’ve had this discussion about Martin’s game and its evaporation upon the disappearance of cheap calls. You STILL play the f*cking game and don’t give up a 20 point padding, even if it’s trading two Spurs buckets for one Rockets bucket you wind up retaining SOME semblance of a lead in an NBA game and we couldn’t even do that. The blame rests on the Rockets, the refs are a nice scapegoat since they cock up but you know for all 12 of those wins we have opposing teams are saying the Rockets got beneficial calls.

So if you play a game where you are fouled for touching a player (and in one instance, you can't even touch him)

what’s your strategy? BD, I have never once blamed the refs for a loss since I became a Rockets fan. But what transpired last night was god-awful

You over-exaggerate how it really was.

Some bad calls happen, you need to learn how to adjust. Rockets fans are just buttmad because no one remembers that we’ve been choking away big leads for YEARS now and every time it happens it’s like moving your hands in front of your face to a baby, they assume it’s new every time.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I've been saying, so holier than thou won't work.

We ignore the beneficial calls that go our way in wins and we yell injustice when we lose. by BD34 on Feb 2, 2012 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

While I do think it is generally hard to place blame on refs for changing the outcome of a game

And I do think the Rockets executed very poorly down the stretch, I think this game is a situation where you can actually look at the officiating and see that it changed the outcome of the game. Whether or not Duncan got a lot of calls, the erroneous charge calls were enough to sway the outcome of the game.

by ehburrus on Feb 2, 2012 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

And I think you exonerate the Rockets too much by pinning the blame on the refs.

The refs didn’t force the Rockets to execute poorly. The refs didn’t force the Rockets not to change up their approach. There comes a time where we need to not manufacture excuses because we don’t like the refs because when the shoe is on the other foot, we tell those fans to shut up.

Maireann croí éadrom i bhfad.

by BD34 on Feb 2, 2012 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not exonerating the Rockets.

They did a terrible job down the stretch. Martin was nowhere to be found, the rest of team shot rather questionably, and the “defense” that Jordan Hill played on Tim Duncan was, well, absolutely terrible. Then Parker came alive at the end, but that shouldn’t have even been enough to propel the Spurs to victory, since we should’ve still had a big lead.

Still, Hill shouldn’t have even been on the floor trying to defend Duncan. It should have been Dalembert, but the referees forced him off the court.

I dont think money has anything to do with it

It was very poor officiating that changed the momentum of the game drastically after we had taken over. Normally, I have no problem with your opinions, but it feels like you’re just trying to be argumentative at this point. We played some poor D and missed some key shots, but when the refs are calling the game one way and ignoring fouls on the other end, it can lose a game for a team. Shocking as it may sound that the refs can change the outcome of a game. It happens

I just have to ask, why does my point get dismissed?

I fully admit the refs can have some influence but blowing a 20 point lead is inexcusable, especially for highly paid men who have made a life out of playing this game. You write the point off (Unwarranted to do so in my opinion) but it speaks to the fact that these men are professionals. Crying about officiating and letting it get to you to the point that you squander a massive lead is inexcusable.
