3 Team trade scenario with the Lakers and Bobcats

Here's what each team convey:

Rockets - Top Tier Big Man

Lakers - Point Guard

Bobcats - Any kind of offense

Star-divide

Rockets Trade: Kevin Martin, Johnny Flynn, Luis Scola, and Hasheem Thabeet

Rockets Receive: Pau Gasol, Boris Diaw ($9 mil expiring conract), and Matt Barnes ($2 mil expiring contract)

Lakers Trade: Pau Gasol and Matt Barnes

Lakers Receive: Luis Scola, Hasheem Thabeet, and DJ Augustin

Bobcats Trade: DJ Augustin and Boris Diaw

Bobcats Receive: Kevin Martin and Johnny Flynn

Why would each team would do this trade?

Rockets: It is no surprise that the Rockets have been looking for a star caliber big man to build around since Yao Ming retired with his foot injuries. Pau Gasol is one of the top centers in the NBA and with 3 years left in his contract and at 31 years of age, he will be off the books right if his age catches up to him. Moving Kevin Martin could also unleash some of the talent that are backed up in the Rockets bench, as well as ridding themselves of a defensive liability. Getting Boris Diaw will give them yet another option at the pf position, but more importantly he is in his contract year and it will free up some cap space as he will be off the books and take all $9 mil off the cap. Matt Barnes is a complementary piece that will give the team some fire of the bench.

Lakers: They are in big need of a point guard right now, so much of a need that they are even looking at Gilbert Arenas and Rafer Alston. While there will be a drop off by losing Pau Gasol, they will get a much better PG in DJ Augustin. The Lakers will also receive Luis Scola and Hasheem Thabeet from the Rockets whom will help shore up the front lines after losing Gasol. Scola can almost match Gasol's scoring ability at the PF position and move Bynum to the Center position.

Bobcats: This team is the most offensively challenged team in the league. Some of this is attributed to injuries, but much of this is simply due to the lack of offensive talent. Although Kevin Martin is one of the worst defensive players in the league not named Carmelo Anthony, Martin is absolutely a lethal weapon on the offensive end. Unlike most high scoring players who holds on to the ball, Martin is one of the best in the league at moving around the floor without the ball which could help Kemba Walker out a lot. By adding Johnny Flynn they will fill the void at the backup pg position left by DJ Augustin. Boris Diaw at this point is probably seen by the league as just an expiring contract, the guy plays with no sense of urgency and is very laissez-faire on the court. Bobcats fans would be excited just to see him gone.

I tried this trade on ESPN NBA Trade Machine and all the numbers check out fine. Let me know your thoughts.

We’d have to take back Diop’s expiring but other than that, that’s a solid trade on all fronts. Some Rockets fans will disagree, but, much like the trade in pre-season, Daryl Morey would jump on this.

I'm a household name... at my house.

Im hoping the Morey love was based on added Nene as well

That combo was something to drool over. Although this deal is not as big in the short term, the cap space provided by the added expiring contracts does make this a solid deal. My ONLY problem with the whole situation: I REALLY hate Gasol’s face.

Rectum!? Damn near killed 'em!!!

You know I could actually live with this. I am not a huge Gasol fan but

We will still have a decent pick in a deep draft and cap space to bring in some talent. We still have Morris with DMo and Lull overseas. This could be sweet.
However the devil is always in the details.

I really hope

Morey is over his Gasol fascination. The cliff he’s going to fall off in the next 2 seasons, makes me not want to take him. Switch Gasol with Bynum though and I’d be listening.

This is precisely why his contract is good for his age.

He will have 2 more seasons after this, if the Rockets see a big fall off then they can choose to not resign him or use his expiring contract as trade bait.

Barnes contract is finishing this summer?

If yes, as a Rocket fan I would do the deal, cause we would have the money to sign a max contract this summer.
Pau would help us attract this elite player (I’m not going to say the name even if we all know I’m talking about Dwight) by simply being a legimitate star to play with.
I like Martin but with Lee to replace him, he wouldn’t be to missed and Pau is far better than Scola (one word : Defense).
Lowry-Lee-Parsons-Pau-Dalembert with Dragic-Barnes-Bud-Patterson-Diaw on the bench would be at least as good as our current roster (what we loose in O, we get it more than back on D) and it would be a more attractive place for FA.

Yes, Barnes contract is expiring this summer

I have updated the changes, good call.

i would do it

scola is dropping off so gasol’s potential drop off wouldn’t make things much worse. his contract is shorter, too, right?

as long as we keep lowry, i’m good with most trades, though.

by sohum on Feb 13, 2012 2:01 PM CST reply actions

Meh.

I don’t think the Rockets are going to want to go two deep at PG with Lowry hurting. Also, who would be SG2?

by AMD on Feb 13, 2012 6:54 PM CST reply actions

We'll have Lee starting, Bud could also slide in at the SG position for some minutes.

perhaps we can finally free up T-Will and Morris for some minutes.

Another avenue we could explore is Deron Williams

He isn’t exactly happy with the Nets and he is from Texas so if he’s willing to resign with us. Would we be willing to participate in a trade that might consist of:

Kyle Lowry, Luis Scola, Jordan Hill, and a 1st round pick for Deron Williams

Li Zheng

by 111 on Feb 13, 2012 7:22 PM CST reply actions

hey guys I just joins TDS!

I don’t think Deron is worth that much. Then again I don’t know much about BB seeing as I’m just getting back into it! I also don’t like the Pau trade either. He’s old and this team is on a youth movement from what I’ve seen. If the owner would actually let Morey be a GM then might be able to land a Super Star.
I was also wondering if we still had the amnesty to use and if so Scola should be gone in the offseason. I hope we can get a trade out of him but who knows at this point.

welcome

and I am also hopping on the don’t-trade-lowry-unless-you-get-a-championship-for-it bandwagon. I feel like the Rockets are about to trade all the players I love in this roster.

And I absolutely do not want Deron Williams to play for the Rockets.

by galicae on Feb 14, 2012 2:31 AM CST up reply actions

No thanks.

Not really interested in going after Gasol now that Nene is gone.

The reason why the trade that was vetoed was so perfect for the Rockets was because Nene was all but guaranteed to sign with us after we acquired Gasol.

Now we can only get Gasol by himself, and as much as I want a star, I don’t want Pau. He and Nene would have easily formed the best frontcourt in the NBA, but now that Nene’s signed with Denver, I think we should focus on FA in July.

If this was Bynum instead of Gasol for Houston, this trade would be a bit more interesting.

As it stands, we probably shouldn’t do it. While we would be trading non-contributors and players who aren’t going to get any better, Gasol is getting worse, and fast.

by Roxbybirth on Feb 14, 2012 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

I would do it

I dont know if Augustin is good enough for LA to drop from Gasol to Scola though. Also Charlotte would probably want a big like Hill if they’re giving up Diaw.

We’re going to hate ourselves if we’re paying Scola $11m in ‘14/15. I love the guy, but he’s getting old and I don’t want to pay $11m for him to come off the bench in his mid-30s for 12pt/4reb. Pau’s getting older too, but his contract is a year shorter and his height will help him stay effective longer. Everyone knows how bad Martin is on D and that Lee is ready to start.

We’ll have even more cap space and a big name to hopefully make a big move this summer. At worst, Gasol is a big expiring contract after next year.

by modobrofo on Feb 14, 2012 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Augustine is pretty damn good.

He has nothing but shit for teammates to pass to. The second best player just might be his back up, Kemba Walker (who looks like he is going to be a big time player in the future). Put Augustine in a better situation and you will see an even better version of himself.

I hate david stern!

What do you guys think of this possibility on ESPN Insider

To Los Angeles: Dwight Howard, Luis Scola, Jameer Nelson
To Houston: Pau Gasol, Matt Barnes, LAL first-round pick
To Orlando: Andrew Bynum, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic, Chandler Parsons

We pick up another 1st round pick in a loaded class and get rid of some hefty contracts.

Li Zheng

by 111 on Feb 15, 2012 12:48 AM CST reply actions

I'd do that in a heatbeat.....

obviously I’m not sold on Flynn being the back up, perhaps we could send cash, a player to be named, or a future second round pick to Orlando and get Ish Smith back.
Another thing about this deal is that it would open up a roster spot, so we could sign Adrien to one of those bullshit 750k per type deals. I think his value is definitely worth that.

This season the Rockets need to sink or swim. Instead, they are just floating. This is the product of an indecisive GM.

Let me get this right

Scola, Martin, Dragic, Parsons for a draft choice #20 or higher? I don’t think so. For a top 15 probably. For both of their picks yes. Neither of the Lakers picks will be that low though.

The Bobcats are gonna want a pick from Both teams

for this….their whole thing is picks and young players. They are looking for a first for DJ…

I say (only based on Morey’s fascination with Gasol:

Lakers Recieve: Lowry and Scola…
Rockets Recieve: Augustin and Gasol and Najera (expiring)
Bobcats Recieve: TWill and Flynn {Laker’s first: Rockets first}

Lakers finally get what they want…A PG. And I personally think Scola isnt a huge downgrade from Gasol…

Rockets get what they want. Gasol. They get a PG that is similar to Lowry. A small downgrade,

Bobcats get a backup PG (that could easily take over) and a SF that is an upgrade over Derrick Brown. And two first rd pick…albeit late firsts…

STATS:
Gasol: 17ppg 11rebs, 1.3blks (this will go up bc he’ll get more touches with HOU)
Scola: 15 and 6. This will probably be it for Scola in LA. May go down slightly
Lowry: 15pts 8assts and 5rebs. Probably stays the same with LAL…
DJ A : 14pts 7assts and 3rebs. Increases…He actually has weapons in HOU
Najera: No need for stats…Gets Flynn and TWill off the Books
Flynn: Stats rise for CHA…just a backup for Kemba. With Starter qualities…
TWILL: Better than D. Brown and Makes the Salaries Work.

Giving up Lowry and a first...

no thanks.

yeah, not Lowry and a 1st

unless that 1st is coming from the Lakers

Bobcats say no to this

They give up a starting PG for a back up, a player going on his 3rd team in as many years, and two draft choices one is great but LA’s is not going to be that great.
Also not ready to give up Lowry. Our draft choice will be a decent pick in a deep draft.
How about a trade Scola and Parsons for Gerald Wallace. The salaries almost match and they have a quality back up for Aldridge and we get a good 3 who can play D.
Then we go for Howard for Martin, Hill Dragic and Bud and our draft choice. All the players in this trade have contracts that expire in two years or less.
Or am I just crazy?

Lakers say no to that.

Augustin is decent, but he’s not good enough to justify the drop from Gasol to Scola. Either need more pieces coming back or a better point guard.

What kind of deal would you propose?

I ask because I want to get a Laker fan perspective on what they are willing to trade for.
