They don't.

This is their team for the next few years. Even if the new CBA hadn’t penalized teams going over the cap, their owner has publicly said that they won’t go into the tax, so they can’t even improve by making MLE deals or something.

I don't want it to happen for several reasons.

Not the least is that taking a team from Sacramento is bullshit.

Contraction really only “necessary” so long as Stern holds onto this “I must keep the Hornets in NOLA” thing, but then it’s only necessary for the Hornets, and so there you go.

A little different for big men.

They reach their peak much later, age slower…

If Thabeet can just stay in the league he can follow the Kwame/Darko career path of being anything between terrible and almost bad in any single season. That at least guarantees you a peak in which you can be a half-decent backup.

Can Thabeet do that? I’m willing to bet that someone is willing to give him a contract to play center next year.

I always hear people talking about trading for Ellis

and on the Houston ESPN Radio they always talk about the “huge mistake” of trading Rudy Gay. Makes no sense

by twinkilling0303 on Feb 20, 2012 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

We never would have drafted Gay if we weren't trading him.

See, we know who was on the top of Morey’s draft board in ‘06 (and while he wasn’t GM yet, he was evidently the impetus behind the Battier trade) because he has basically said as much in interviews with Simmons: It was Rajon Rondo.

The Rockets only drafted Gay for the trade.

The Monta Ellis infatuation is just so baffling. Like, imagine Kevin Martin, but he isn’t good at shooting, either.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 20, 2012 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

It's suprising

When you watch the game, you’d think man Parsons is doing his best to guard his guy, and yet they still got like 20 pt, but if you look at stats, you’ll be like, wow, “that guy took 20 shots, good job Chandler”

by NVP on Feb 20, 2012 9:27 PM CST up reply actions

Efficiency is what matters.

Points totals matter much much much less than efficiency. Missed shots are too often bad shots. Bad shots could have been good shots.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 20, 2012 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

At some point, points scored does start to matter.

Because efficiency is relative to a teams system, a player can be very efficient in a small role and horribly inefficient in a larger role. A team needs players in big roles, and thus needs players that can score a lot of points. Ideally they’ll be at least somewhat efficient.

by ehburrus on Feb 20, 2012 9:35 PM CST up reply actions

Players tend to be so consistent in their shooting percentages from team to team and year to year

that I really doubt the system matters that much. Maybe in extreme cases, but for the most part it’s just a matter of getting a bunch of guys who shoot accurately and having enough guys who can move the ball well and who secure the ball after a missed shot.

Look at Martin. He’s the top guy on the team, but if the game isn’t coming to him he just doesn’t shoot. And the Rockets, despite not having one of those “high-usage” dudes people go on and on about, still have had a top-10 offense in the past two years.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 20, 2012 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

While I understand that this is true

The most efficient player in the league right now is Tyson Chandler. He’s a great asset to have. However, a team full of Tyson Chandlers would be horrible.

The point is, you need somebody on the team creating their own offense. In our case, it’s usually Lowry, although we frequently try to make it Scola.

Players creating their own offense are generally less efficient than guys like Tyson Chandler.

by ehburrus on Feb 20, 2012 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

That's taking effecieny to an extreme

we’re not really talking about having players that are the most efficient, rather it’ making the players have inefficient game. Scorers are going to score, rarely can one shutdown Kobe or Durant, but because they are such a large part of their offense and has a sense of responsibility to score for the team limiting him has the added effect of changing the dynamic of the rest of the players. Sometimes it helps the other team, because another player steps up, but most of the time it does.

by NVP on Feb 20, 2012 10:28 PM CST up reply actions

Well, not exactly. But it's the logical conclusion of what I said.

I was arguing with the position that only efficiency is important

by ehburrus on Feb 20, 2012 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

I think the kind efficiency we're talking about

strictly points/FGA, really has applies best on team’s leading scorers more than any other player. The efficiency of your primary scorer is a great reflection of how good the team is.

Because it really only matters that the person shoots the most also gets the most points out of their attempts, Tyson Chandle takes 6 shots a game, and 4 of those are dunks and lay ups if not all, it doesnt compare to Durant taking around 20 and it cant be all kinds of offense

take the leagues worst 4 teams, Bobcats, Washington, Toronto and New Orlean.

Gerald Henderson average 15pts on 13 shots and Kemba averaged 13 pts on12 shots. Nick Young, 17 on 15, and Wall 16 on 13(more respectable), Bargnani 24 on 18(the best among the group, unfortunately injured for a month now), Derozan 16 on 14(though much better after Bargnani is out). Jarret Jack 15 on 13 and Ariza 12 on 11(Eric Gordan out of consideration because he played 2 games).

Bargnani and Wall are the only 2 I’d consider efficient

in comparison, Lebron is averaging 28 on 18 and Wade is 22 on 17, Rose 22 on 17, Deng 16 on 14, Durant 28 on 20, Westbrook 23 on 19, Tony Parker 19 on 16 and Duncan 14 on 12.

Only Deng and Duncan would I consider less efficient and for the record, the both makes up a lot on the other side of the ball.

I’m not say there are no exceptions, but in general, you want your best 2 scorer to be efficient

and you can observe the same trend on teams that are exception. Philly and Hawkes dont have very efficient scorers, but they make up for it by allowing less point by the other team, While teams like GSW and Suns have efficient scorers, but also gives up a decent amount of points

efficiency of role players changes night to night simply because they are subject to a smaller sample size night to night , so it means very little to evaluate role player’s scoring efficiency, because they simply dont score enough or have enough attempt for their efficiency to mean much

by NVP on Feb 21, 2012 1:21 AM CST up reply actions

From a team perspective

If Kobe score 50 on 50 shot, it leaves about 30 shot for the rest of his teammate, and it boils down to 4 maybe 5 shot per other player, unless they are incredibly efficient not being in rythm, it can hardly win a basketball game

by NVP on Feb 20, 2012 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

It's actually ok to be an ineffecient player overall

If you can make your surrounding players much more efficient because of it

It’s not bad to be ineffecient, but you’re just counting on your surrounding player to be much more efficient because of it, so it’s a heavier burden and harder to pull off

by NVP on Feb 20, 2012 10:05 PM CST up reply actions

Or if you have great offensive rebounders

that’s why I don’t buy the whole “Kobe needs to stop shooting so much” thing. He should shoot more honestly, who else is gonna score? Gasol and Bynum can clean up on the boards.

by twinkilling0303 on Feb 20, 2012 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

Not really.

They should use Bynum in the post more.

by ehburrus on Feb 20, 2012 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

Right

but as far as taking shots, Kobe needs the bulk of it. When Kobe has the ball, the bigs know there’s a good chance he’s gonna shoot, which lets them know it’s time to get position down low.

by twinkilling0303 on Feb 20, 2012 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

well Bynum and Gasol can score

It’s not that Kobe is shooting too much, but Gasol and Bynum arent shooting enough. Post game is usually much more reliable than jump-shots and guard play and there are less good post defender than good wing defenders, and it opens up spacing for the other wings as well

It’s not to say Kobe cant beat them all, it’s just that Mike Brown is wearing down his greatest piece and not really using his other weapons more efficiently, the Knicks game for example, there is no reason Bynum and Gasol combine cant get Chandler in foul trouble, Kobe on there other hand has to work for his shots against Landry field, Iman Shrumpert and Jared Jefferies

Gasol and Bynum do need more shots

but that’s on the point guards a little bit, and they also need to demand the ball more. Nobody ever sees that kind of fire from Gasol and Bynum. They are more than happy to stand and watch, and everyone always wants Kobe to bail them out. Ultimately the other Lakers are the problem, the big 3 really have no help.

Ultimately I blame Mike Brown

Kobe is a good playmaker, but he’s not Lebron, Mike Brown is putting the burden of decision making on Kobe, like he did with Lebron and like Dantoni did with Melo, because they need to get the most touch. It worked great with Lebron because he fancies himself a point guard, and he does have great court awareness and passing ability. Kobe on the other is better at score than all those other thing, so naturally he’s going to shoot, because he is a better scorer than he is a facilitator.

But without constantly establishing the post, first, it only makes harder and harder for the wing players because the constant post threat that should be there are there, they have no pressure inside and no reason to collapse and leave the perimeter

I love OJ Mayo's stat line

11 shots, 6 points.

Oh, and 0-5 from 3. If you can’t make them, don’t shoot them.
