He was moved up the other day..

Still in the d-league.

Friedman says it’s so he can get more playing time. So apparently the Rockets are more interested in him as prospect than as last guy off the bench, which is interesting.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

I know he's in the D-League.

He was moved up and then back down. I’m no expert at all with all the D-League players and such, all I know is that if they play in a Rocket’s uniform they better bring it.

Dallas and Houston fan making it work. Gig 'em!

by OJ ATM on Feb 9, 2012 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

He was moved up yesterday kinda.

He moved up in the sense that he signed an NBA contract and is thus on the roster, but not in the sense that he was ever with the team or anything. He’s just one of our two players who we can send down to the d-league.

See, RGV’s players (with the exception of Morris and now Smith) don’t have contracts with the Rockets or even the Vipers. They actually have a contract with the NBADL itself. They can get “called up” by signing an NBA regular contract or a 10-day contract.

The NBADL actually has a pretty informative FAQ available.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

Right, and with an NBA contract they're Rockets players

and can’t be signed like other Dleaguers by other teams.

yeah he sign a contract

physically, I dont think he actually joined the team on the road

Think of the D-league as more or less a practice squad, just now Greg Smith is no longer “available” to other teams, since he has a guaranteed contract with us

Viper players can be called up by anyone else

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 7:27 PM CST up reply actions

Viper players can be called up by anyone else

Exactly. That’s why the contract is so interesting, because evidently the Rockets like him enough to “waste” a roster spot on a guy who is currently in Hidalgo.

The way the NBADL is affiliated with their partner teams is really interesting to me. The Rockets use the Vipers, apparently, as some sort of incubator for both draft talent and their front office and coaching personnel. They don’t have any extra rights to sign any of the players on the RGV roster, but I guess they get a closer look at them.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

Well Morey kind of pulled a dick move last season

by calling up 2 of the better players of D-league in Cousin and Blakely, and leave Viper opponents without their best player.

We can give out 10 day contract just like anyone else. The Viper are more interesting in the past because Fitch was essentially handed Adelman’s playbook, and the team was model after the team up here. The vertical integration was something we implemented and have over teams that does share the same model, but this season, I dont think the Rockets and McHale actually had a chance to work with Nurse to install that kind of integration

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised if they were doing it by now.

It’s a good question.

Before this starts:

Lowry probably won’t make it, but that’s only because everyone is really overrating Westbrook. Nash deserves a spot. Nash/Parker would also be acceptable. Nash/Harden very acceptable, too.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 5:59 PM CST reply actions

It's always sort of interesting to me

that even though coaches talk about the importance of defense, rebounding, etc., when it comes down to actually making decisions all that seems to matter is points per game.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 6:08 PM CST reply actions

If you ask people

they seem to know, but it just doesn’t matter in decisions. Highlight plays stick out in your mind. Defense rarely creates highlight plays, and so that part of Lowry’s game gets ignored.

I’m serious, I’d take Lowry over both Nash and Parker. He’s a better defender, better rebounder, just as good of a passer as Parker and just as good of a shooter, too. It’s bullshit, but like I said, even the coaches have a fucked up judgement mechanism.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

If you're talking about the All Star Game selections, no one gives a shit about defense for that game.

So factoring in defense and rebounding is useless for exhibition games. For actual teams and games that mean something? They absolutely mean it.

Maireann croí éadrom i bhfad.

by BD34 on Feb 9, 2012 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

But the logic behind all-star selections is made in terms of who is "best," not who is most entertaining.

It extends to non-ASG situations, too, of course, but the ASG selections are one of the more visible examples.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

I'm strictly speaking to the ASG.

It’s an exhibition to entertain the fans. Fans want stars and flash, does Lowry bring any of that? No. Therefore, it doesn’t matter. When teams want to win a title, they compose a team with defense and offense. When teams want to entertain (Last two years of the Rockets, Phoenix Suns too!?) they acquire offensive players and run em’.

Maireann croí éadrom i bhfad.

by BD34 on Feb 9, 2012 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

In Lowry's defense and in my humble opinion

I think Lowry brings just as much flash as Tony Parker.

Parker scores more

That and the Spurs are 2nd in the West, you know, we’re only fourth.

by RiiseRockets on Feb 9, 2012 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

Parker has had a better season this year. No doubt.

But, watching them play, I just like the way Lowry plays and I’ve seen him play in exhibition games with no defense like The Allstar game. That’s just my personal opinion of who I like to watch more, not based on who’s better.

Dallas and Houston fan making it work. Gig 'em!

by OJ ATM on Feb 9, 2012 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

That's fine and dandy but let's get rid of the homerism.

How many F-U threes matter in the ASG when it’s more about dunks, slick passes, and ball handling?

Maireann croí éadrom i bhfad.

by BD34 on Feb 9, 2012 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

I'd argue the entirity of ASG doesnt matter at all

it’s almost regardless of skills. How many time have you seen Duncan and Dirk did any of the things you just mention?

You dont even have to be good at passing to do slick passes in the ASG, players just go for it since there’s no consequences. Mo William cant even really pass and he made it one year. David West is certainly not the flashest player nor is Chuancey Billups

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

No problem with the selections

They are all better players in my opinions. That slump hurt Kyle I think

by TheDream34 on Feb 9, 2012 6:09 PM CST reply actions

Fuck yes

Deng and Iggy made it in the East. Iggy should have started over Melo. Melo shouldn’t even be there.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 6:17 PM CST reply actions

OTOH

Rondo lost out to Williams, who has been playing like shit since he got injured last year.

It's a game that doesn't matter and a talent expose for the fans.

Every time Parsons gets the least bit open, Worrell and Bullard want him to shoot it.

And, with the exception of that one made three, he has driven to the basket and either scored or passed to a more open guy.

I’m sure there’s someone in the rising star game less deserving than Parsons, but Morris isn’t it.

oh, shit,

I haven’t read that since I was in Junior High…

Patterson is Ender, Dragic is Bean, Lee is Petra, and those are the only characters I remember.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Lee is a girl?

cant you go with Crazy Tom

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

From what I remember, Petra was the one who was the most experienced

and Lee is the one who has been to the Finals and kicked ass around the league…

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Ah, but reading the entries at the "Enderverse Wiki..."

I misremembered, and Petra was never part of Dragon Army. And Crazy Tom was traded all the time and very experienced, so that makes a lot of sense. Good call.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Actually he was the only other guy i remembered

and I remember him more from Ender’s shadow than Ender’s game

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

It's weird

I remember reading Ender’s Shadow, and I vaguely remember a lot of it, but it’s mostly empty to me. Whereas I remember a great deal of what happened in Ender’s Game, Speaker for the Dead, etc.

The “new” stuff largely sucked, I think. Just too silly most of the time.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Shadow and Game are the only 2 I've read

Card is very plot driven after a while, even though he created all these great characters. I like the parallel between game and shadow, but shadow is a story of a role player rather than a star

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

I've myself only read Enders Game.

But I can’t bring myself to read the others. Now that I think of it, I don’t even know where I put the books anymore.

A void? I see no void!

by gunsbound on Feb 9, 2012 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

I remember it was nice that we got to read sci-fi

and not some boring stuff that’s over our head half the time

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

The ones Card wrote back in the 80s have relatively little to do with Ender's Game

beyond reusing the character of Ender and using blowing up the bugs as a big lesson about guilt or something, but I think they’re pretty great. I think I’m in the minority on that opinion, though. Fans like Speaker for the Dead but tend to think Xenocide and Children of the Mind are too weird. I liked them, though. Good science fiction. A little heady, but still an easy read and not opaque like Herbert or something.

The newer stuff he wrote in the last decade mostly sucked, though people tend to like Shadow. It was certainly the best of the new stuff, but that doesn’t set the bar very high.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

It's just odd that ball ends up in Sam D's hand more than Martin

He took so many ill advise shot because he had no choice

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

Not really

he chooses to take weird fadeaways and shit on his own.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Right.

Like I’ve said before, Martin needs his teammates to set up his offense. His strength is movement off the ball to get away from his defender. When Scola is posting up instead of doing that, or when Parsons is hanging out at the perimeter instead of doing that, he doesn’t have enough space and so he doesn’t get the ball. What I’ve seen throughout the game is that Martin makes the sort of cuts and moves that would previously get him some space, but now there isn’t anyone blocking his guy, so he gets the ball and he doesn’t have anything.

Of course, he isn’t really shooting well, either, so that’s part of it, too. It’s not like he’s hyper-productive with the possessions he does get.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

by RiiseRockets on Feb 9, 2012 10:08 PM CST reply actions

Eww...

So basically he’s chucking free throws up like the second coming of Shaq…except worse…No excuse at ALL for being a poor free throw shooter. None.

My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.

by f22a4bandit on Feb 9, 2012 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe he's just not a good FT shooter.

Just like some guys just aren’t good shooters from three point range.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

He needs to fix that

At least be .600. This is what he shooted in Florida.
But you need to do something, maybe change his hands position on the ball when shooting.

by RiiseRockets on Feb 9, 2012 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, certainly no excuse for shooting sub-.300.

Doubt he becomes a good shooter, but just “poor” would be nice.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

Good win

now if only we can get out of this losing the lead in the 3rd quarter thing, we’d be great

No kidding

Nash had a ridiculous game

but you guy really need some depth

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

unfortunately for us, the guy we need had a good game and is wearing a red uni…I’m still pissed about that trade. we have good depth it’s just that when nash is out it’s a different game. Dragic is no Nash, but he was learning. just in this game I could see some of things he picked up.

by 2NASHTY on Feb 9, 2012 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

So was the Dragic trade just a salary dump?

Sarver getting rid of one of those pesky draft picks and getting a guy they could non-tender?

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 9, 2012 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

no

as NVP points out Dragic was struggling. Brooks was a hail marry pass and i understand the logic. Brooks brought more right away but Dragic ceiling is higher plus he idolized Nash and really picked a lot up from him. I think the idea was to give Nash a scoring back up so he could be conserved at the cost of a future PG. throwing in the 1st round pick was just dumb though.

by 2NASHTY on Feb 9, 2012 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

Dragic was realy struggling though

You guy should really get rid of Telfair and call up Blake Ahearn or Ben Uzoh, or anyone, because Telfair looks awful

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

yup...

believe it or not we’re REALLY wishing Brooks was back…although if I’m wishing i wish we still had Dragic. I know he can be a head case but that was a great pick up for the rockets.

by 2NASHTY on Feb 9, 2012 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

Dragic is awesome

unfortunately after this season he’ll probably go to the highest bidder and possibly a starter job, so we’re enjoying him now

by NVP on Feb 9, 2012 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah.

Sad to say, I don’t think we resign him.

I hope

he decides to take his awesome and bank roll into super mega Awesome, by returning to the master and ascending…I know it sounds homerish but I could see him coming back to play with Nash again. for YEARS phx tried to find an understudy to Nash, the Dragon was the only one who even approached that Ideal. not just cuz of his talent, but Nash really made effort to work with him.

This is good if you have league pass, too (and you get it free with LP)

You use realplayer (or any other client that lets you stream audio) to play the radio feed and sync it to the NBALP feed. Nice way to get around listening to the Spurs, Jazz commentators.

Not too worried about Martin but Dalembert is starting to worry me. The word out of Philadelphia was that Dalembert was inconsistent and not giving full effort at times.

looks like he gets benched when he doesn't want to play

maybe we are pretending that they’re getting saved for later in the road trip?

by BuckeyeBob on Feb 9, 2012 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

I think they get benched because the bench is doing very well.

McHale’s going with what’s working. No point in speculating whether or not someone “wants to play.”

Seemed tender on swing passes to the left. maybe tired shooting toward the end.

by BuckeyeBob on Feb 9, 2012 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

Lowry's elbow didnt seem to hurt his shot. Drain 2 deep treys

he also took a charge late in the game and worked in the paint for boards and the like. The Elbow didnt seem to hinder him much

by Camouflage14 on Feb 9, 2012 11:10 PM CST up reply actions

Needs to be more active.

Has backed off a bit. Not going for rebounds quite as hard, perhaps because he’s trying to get back on defense. Also hanging out at the perimeter too much.

very little

NBA seems to be committed to finding a buyer who will keep them in NOLA.

They’d probably be acceptable, too though.

Just take something without as much history as the Kings.

Unfortunately,

this is exactly what the NBA owners want: The small and middling markets battling amongst themselves to build the most expensive Xanadu. Only way this shit stops is if more cities say no.

At this point, I could care less.

When the Sonics left in 2008 that was the most unfair moment of my entire life. Howard Schultz and Clay Bennett are dead to me, I haven’t had Starbucks in 4 years, ect. I want the Sonics back. At any cost.

I think it was basically last night part 2.

Basically the same shit happened, it’s just that the starters were worse so the lead wasn’t as big, so it turned into a slight deficit in the final quarter rather than a small lead.

I really didn't think it was too weird.

I mean, I guess there could have been some calls, but for the most part the Suns just didn’t foul on shots.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 10, 2012 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

Alright that's ok.

It’s just odd to see no FT in a half. But Rockets moved the ball so well on PDX last night that they most shot open jumpers, so no chance of a foul.

I’d still like to see Rockets drive without charges called every damn time.
