Why Renting Dwight Howard Would Be Perfect

Over the past couple of days, there have been non-HOOPSWORLD-related rumors about the Rockets trying to acquire Dwight Howard. The only name mentioned has been Kyle Lowry, so far. Otis Smith apparently really likes him, and would consider trading Howard for Lowry and a number of other pieces. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Patrick Patterson would be involved in the package, as I'm sure a team in rebuilding like Orlando would want a young player like P2.

Now, onto why this would be a win-win situation for the Rockets, as it honestly doesn't matter who is involved in the trade. There are two reasons why, if we rent D12, we could not lose.

1) I'm assuming we're going to trade quite a bit in order to get D12, but if we could somehow lure a star FA like a Deron Williams to come play in Houston with D12, that would instantly make us contenders.

2) Unfortunately for us, Houston isn't that attractive of a place to play in, even if we would have a superstar like Dwight Howard. So, there's a good chance that we would fail in trying to sign Deron Williams or any other available star FA. In the event that we don't sign a star FA, D12 would likely bolt elsewhere. Why is this a good thing? Because we would be forced to commit to rebuilding. We traded away all of our quality players in order to get Howard, therefore we wouldn't be left with much. Enter Donatas Motiejunas and Sergio Llull. Motiejunas is very likely to come over next year, and I'm pretty sure that the starting PG job being completely up for grabs would attract Llull over here as well. So, on top of those two, we would have Marcus Morris (doubt he would be in the D12 trade) and our 2012 1st round pick acquired from New York (by trading for Howard, I'm assuming that we would make the playoffs, therefore we'd lose our 1st round pick to NJ). Also throw in Courtney Lee, who will likely be re-signed in the off-season (he's a RFA). There's a good chance that Parsons would be in the trade, but he may not. Too hard to predict. Same can be said for Dalembert.

Now, the main point of doing this, is that we'll avoid mediocrity next season. We'll either be contenders with 2 stars, or we'll be a team fully committed to rebuilding. It's a win-win situation, IMO.

EDIT: Just saw that Lowry's out for 2-4 weeks with a bacterial infection, so now there's not a possibility that we could rent D12, which sucks.
