Rockets Acquire Dwight Howard For A Sign & Trade?

Stay connected for news and updates

I was thinking today, amidst all of the (what were once) rumors, about the Rockets aggressively going after D12. It's fairly obvious what Houston is doing now with all of the draft pick stockpiling they are doing. It's also obvious that Dwight wants to be in Brooklyn. Being a player of his skill, he's the kind of talent that really dictates where he wants to play. Seeing as Houston is the farthest thing from his radar and that it's been said that there is no chance he would resign, what about the possibility of a sign and trade after next season?

There has been much talk of best and worst case scenarios. Best case? Dwight stays, the Rockets bring on additional talent and become a perennial Wester Conference power house. Worst case scenario is that he doesn't resign, leaves and now the Rockets are in full on rebuilding mode. What about if Morey's thought is that the worst case scenario is that we get some really good pieces back in a sign and trade deal? From my limited understanding of how it works, Dwight would get a larger contract in the city he wants and the Rockets would then get pieces and/or draft picks after a year. Imagine if Orlando had the role players Houston does and made the previously rumored trade with LA for Bynum. A Houston Rockets team with Andrew Bynum (like him as a person or not) would be a damn good team.

That doesn't sound like too bad of a deal as a worst case scenario. In fact, it really doesn't sound like we are missing out on anything. We take a run at the playoffs, and if we miss we end up with some potentially awesome pieces to rebuild with. I'm not even entirely sure that, if a sign and trade were to happen, that a 2013-2014 Rockets team would be a team in rebuilding mode with the potential haul from a Dwight Howard trade. It's not the "starting from scratch" business that has been so widely reported. Chances are we still have Dragic and a slew of solid role players. There may have to be another team involved in the trade at the end of next season, but I don't see Houston walking away empty handed if/when Dwight leaves. Thoughts?
