With the recent departures of Goran Dragic and Kyle Lowry the Rockets are in need of a Point Gaurd (Although I recently discovered we have just acquired Toney Douglas in a sign and trade for Camby, I still think we need a Point Gaurd hehe).
I put to you, the good people of The Dream Shake, the proposal of signing Australian and San Antonio Spurs gaurd Patrick Mills. Mills is young (23 years old) which makes him ideal for a rebuilding team. Secondly, although restricted, he has decided to test the free agent waters (http://www.smh.com.au/sport/basketball/mills-turns-down-spurs-chases-better-offer-20120628-214e9.html). As the article states, Mills stood to make a measly $900k last year making him a low risk buy in my opinion.
Thirdly, dude can score. Although his season average from last year was 10.3ppg from just 16 games, he had a couple of monster games towards the end of the season once given the opportunity to start for the Spurs. This included the incredible numbers of 34 points and 12 assists against the Golden State Warriors on April 26.
In a rebuilding team such as the Rockets, who will be testing out the skills and abilities of their young players and recruits, Mills could prove to be a serviceable back up or even starting point guard. In my opinion he should be at least able to share minutes fairly equally with Livingston and/or Douglas and should hardly be making a dent in the Rockets cap. I would liken Mills to Aaron Brooks in his quickness and quality jump shot. Add to that some decent passing skills and ability to get to the rack.
Mills is an NBA ready player just waiting to boom given good minutes and greater responsibility. As an Australian, I may be am biased towards Patty (I would be putting my order in for a Mills Rockets jersey IMMEDIATELY), but I do honestly think he would be a good fit at the Rockets, and really, what have we got to lose?
Please share your thoughts guys,
John
