Woj has recently written that the Grizzlies are fully intent on unloading Rudy Gay, and that the Raptors are the most likely destination for the highly-paid forward. The lone major hang-up on completing a deal, he reports, is a 3rd team to take back the contract of PG Jose Calderon, which expires this summer. I've given this some thought, and feel like DM could and should be the facilitator in this deal. After tinkering with the trade machine, this is what I've come up with:
TOR receives: Rudy Gay, Patrick Patterson
HOU receives: Jose Calderon
MEM receives: Demar Derozan, Cole Aldrich, Alan Anderson, Toney Douglas, and a future draft consideration from TOR
For our beloved Rockets, this provides the team with immediate and long-term help in a variety of ways. Firstly, Calderon is a major upgrade from Douglas when considering 3-point shooting and passing, while only being a minor step back defensively (Toney is pesky and that's admirable, but he picks up lots of foul calls and is undersized) - these are key skills that will be integral to a playoff push this season. Secondly, this kind of deal clears some more cap space for us this summer. While Aldrich and Douglas are expiring deals anyway, Patterson has another year or so left on his contract. The 2.1M dollar difference in cap space can be fairly significant come FA time. Thirdly, this gives us bird rights for a guy who has proven to be a valuable, ableit currently overpaid, combo guard. This is something I think the Rockets desperately need - a guy that's a good enough passer to give you PG insurance (something Lin will need as he develops), and a player big enough to play SG in a small ball set alongside Lin and Harden. Furthermore, our bench lacks a play creator, and Calderon adds that element to the team.
The Memphis part of the deal is pretty straight-forward. They want to shed salary, and they definitely get that in this kind of deal. Furthermore, DeRozan's deal is 'hefty,' but he will be paid less than 2/3 of what Gay will get next season, and is significantly younger and has yet to realize his full potential. He also upgrades Memphis perimeter shooting. Douglas gives Memphis another option at the backup point, and Alan Anderson has shown flashes of competence and even skill this season in Toronto.
For Toronto, they get their guy in Gay, and are forced to take back Patterson so that we can save a little cash this summer in exchange for our shouldering the acquisition of Calderon.
So what do you guys think? Is this an attractive idea, or one that DM should let fall by the wayside?
