Hello all, so far this season has gone far rougher then expected. Our boys in red have yet to put together an entire game that looks like we know what we are doing. We have talent, dont get me wrong, I am a huge fan of our guys in clutch city, but the games are downright sloppy. One of the biggest issues, in my opinion, is that we do not have a true point guard. Lin has been playing very very well, but the role he is filling is more of a scoring guard. Harden is also a scoring guard. Parsons started off cold but he is also, a scoring guard. notice a trend? I am not in any means against having guys who can fill it up from every position, but we do need a point guard to run the show. Harden is a deft passer but I do not think he is the right guy to be running things because when he has the ball, and we are down, or the game is close, he is like any scorer and he wants to score especially when the guys around him might be cold or he might think he can do it better. Additionally, we have seen what he can do when he gets the ball in the half court with a dribble, but automatically defaulting to giving him the ball because our other guards have such issues getting the ball into the post essentially eliminates the point guard position (we still need a small quick guard out there to play defense on small quick guards). As sports fans are wont to do, a couple friends and I sat down to talk over what we would do to fix the team over a few cold ones. Of course, almost instantly the 'trade asik' talks came up along with the ideal targets. LMA. Love. In the age of smartphones, we realized that we actually cant straight trade Love for Asik like so many people we know seem to think. So we actually broke it down and tried to figure out a solution (we actually had a t-wolves fan in the room) and we did it along with an extra move I thought of that tied the whole thing together in a nice little bow. Obviously, this is all conjecture, but I wanted to get the people at TDS to share their thoughts, on our thoughts.
Asik + Lin for Rubio + Love: Losing Rubio was met with an absolute ton of derision from the timberwolves fan (Lets call him TW for this) at first. We then showed him stat lines for both guys, and based on what Lin has done so far, he got on board very quickly. Why would we even want Rubio though? He cant score, if we are making a title run, we need a guy who can score (back to that all 5 positions thing). One of the guys brought up a good point though, if we have that many scorers on the floor, it would definitely be better to have a pass first guy who can get them all the ball, we dont even need a scorer with Love. Right, but if we are playing a good defensive team, like the Heat or Bulls or Pacers (You can tell we all have high title aspirations) they possess the ability to guard all 4 of those positions if they dont have to worry about our point guard scoring. This also works financially as long as we dump any contract of more then 800k (Gsmith, Caspi, TJones, Dmo, I believe ABZ was on this list as well but we still need him for the surprise move). Obviously we like their potential, but we are building a contender here and Love is still young enough to be considered the future.
Rubio + ABZ for Kemba Walker: After I brought this up, TW wanted us to try and package this as a part of the earlier deal at first in order to get Biz in Minny, we shoved him by the wayside as swiftly as possible. Kemba is definitely a scoring point guard, and he does not fit into the 'Morey Mold' of 3pt or rim or bust. He takes and makes a ton of midrange shots, is very fast, has good vision and is not only a deft passer but a good young leader. I like this team on paper with him at point, that might just be me though, I remember his days in college and he has looked fantastic this year so far. Not to mention he is a great young defensive point guard, as good as Beverly on defense but with a very good offensive arsenal thrown in. Again, this works from the financial side of things, not sure if they would go for it in charlotte.
So there it is, another thought thrown out into the mist of speculation. One that I like a little more personally, but I would definitely like to hear what people think. I have not given up on the twin towers, or Jeremy Lin, as long as they are still on the floor and suiting up in red and white they have my full support (actually, I like both Asik and Lin enough as players I would probably continue to root for them anytime we are not playing them), This was just a bit of conjecture based on the unrest following the opening set of games. If no moves are made, I completely trust that we will figure this out down the road, teams ran offenses with two huge bigs before, usually one could score more easily, but never have they had the athlete that is D12. Go Rockets!
