Let's play a fun game of hypotheticals. Assuming the Rockets could have one player NOT in the preseason top 20 according to ESPN (LeBron, KD, Chris Paul, Westbrook, Curry, Irving, Marc Gasol, Kevin Love, Tony Parker, Paul George, Blake Griffin, Melo, Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldrige, DWayde, Al Horford, and Deron Williams), who would most improve the current team and why?
I'll start. The whole team is strong but the biggest upgrades could be made at PG (where our team is strong but the NBA is incredibly deep right now) and PF (where we only have one PF who can guard big guys). Given that, we could have John Wall, Chris Bosh, Rondo, Lillard, Andre Igudala (who plays SF but is so good this year, injury notwithstanding) and Anthony Davis, among others. There's some other good names like Josh Smith and Serge Ibaka in the 30-50 range of the ESPN rankings too.
Thinking about who I'd take, I think you have to combine skill and upside with how well the player would fit with our team as constructed. Anthony Davis is a complete beast right now statistically (28 PER?? really??) but could he and Dwight work together on offense? Terrence Jones is almost the perfect running mate for Dwight based on his style.
Therefore, I think my pick would have to be Bosh. He can rebound, he can defend, he's got a great midrange game, and he knows how to play at an elite level. Davis may be the better player in the long run, but right now I think the player that would most improve the Rockets would be Bosh.
Because of the embarrassment of richest that is the Rockets roster, Morey's thought process when deciding what to trade Asik for has to be along these lines - what player/players actually makes the Rockets better? Of course we aren't going to get Bosh (although how awesome would an Asik+Brooks+one other for Bosh trade be?) but the general idea is to not make a trade just for the sake of making a trade.
Thoughts? Who is your dream addition to the roster?
