To start this post off: I like Carlos Delfino. I liked him a lot when we signed him, because I thought he would be a valuable veteran presence off the bench who could keep some of our young players moving during the many down parts of the year. Then, we traded for James Harden, and Delfino became, well, less needed.
There are a few reasons why I don't want this team to retain Carlos Delfino for next year, but the main one is that he's just really not earning the major minutes he's getting as a backup wing. Delfino is a guy who off-ball basically hangs out at the perimeter and either waits for a pass or cuts to get open for a pass. The problem is, he's not really playing well enough to earn a position doing that.
We need a player to fill the backup wing role who can make good decisions and do at least one of these things (and hopefully two of them):
- Be a threat to pump fake and drive to the hoop, either finishing at the rim or passing off to a bigman.
- Be a good defender.
- Shoot 42%+ from beyond the arc.
Carlos Delfino is a pretty good decision maker, but unfortunately he really cannot do any of those other things. He's too slow to get around defenders with a pump fake, he's too slow and not active enough on the defensive end, and he doesn't convert quite enough of his 3pt shots, mainly because he bricks way too many wide open 3s.
A player I'd really like to get is Brandon Rush. He's got a player option with the Warriors, but they're already stacked with shooters, and he's coming off an ACL tear so he should be pretty cheap. He's a solid defender and 3pt shooter who was top ten in the league in TS% in the 2012 season.
The following is a list of players who are free agents this offseason whom I would rather have in a backup wing role than Delfino:
