Dwight Howard and James Harden? The Free Throw Fest?

Free throws are a great weapon in almost all game situations. James Harden was a beast this past season in terms of both drawing fouls and making free throws (NBA best 10.2 attempts/game and 8.6 makes/game). The second most attempts per game this past season belonged to one Dwight Howard. Assuming Dwight Howard comes to Houston, I have a very interesting theory about our offense next season.

First, here are some stats from this past season:

James Harden {Field goal: 7.5makes/17.1attempts 43.8%} {Free throw: 8.6makes/10.2attempts 85.1%}

Dwight Howard {Field goal: 6.2makes/10.7attempts 57.8%} {Free throw: 4.7makes/9.5attempts 49.2%}

That is a combined 19.7 attempts per game from the duo. Even TMac and Yao didn't have that in their days. Of course, Howard's percentage is atrocious, but that is still an interesting stat (that I am sure Morey is drooling over).

I assume there will be some kind of drop off in the free throw attempts for both Howard and Harden (most likely Harden's attempts, because Dwight is surely getting more touches in Houston than he did in L.A.), but I believe there will be a net increase in the total number of free throw attempts for the whole team. One, obviously Howard is bringing 9 free throw attempts a game (underestimating a little most likely). Two, since the Rockets will more than likely be able to put opposing teams in the penalty often and early, if the offense stays aggressive, we are going to get free throws from all our players. This scenario will mean that Harden and Howard can make their teammates (as well as each other) better just by playing their games. There will be high percentage possessions simply because we are going to shoot free throws. Even at Howard's measly 49% free throw shooting, we are still getting a high point return on each possession.

That is an insane revelation to me, and I think you should be excited about that too. Of course, whether this signing materializes is another story. I just wanted to remind you all what Dwight could mean to us. This offense will be even more high-octane, and we're not even talking about the offensive sets that will incorporate Howard (I'll leave that to more knowledgeable fans).
