While many argued that having Asik is a luxury, i think Darryl Morey has 2014 in his mind (Bosh, KLove, and Alridge). . I personally prefer Klove, simply because he is still 24 therefore he can carry the team when Howard oneday retires.Ryan Anderson and Paul Milsap may be a good fit for this team, but they can't carry the offensive burden when Howard is down. Rockets can still win the championship with Howard and Asik
Giving Asik a training with the dream is a good a form of compensation and a safe bet.First, If asik comes out of the training with only a hook shot, Rocket can still use his service for a year and then flip him.Even if he spend most of his time backing up Howard, can any GM in NBA say no to Omer Asik with a competent hook shot? Asik's offensive development dictates whether it's going to be for exmple, Asik+DMO or Asik+DMO+Garcia/Tjones for any of the above mentioned power forward.
Second,I think Howard will change defense culture of the team, which means Asik finally will earn his rightful spot in All NBA defensive team. Even a spot in 3rd defenseve team will raise his stock. Lastly , i might be wrong here, but because Rockets will have already paid him 16 million , in the third year any NBA team would only have to pay him 9 million.
Of course if twin towers work out, there will be no reason to trade Asik, Morey has put himself in a comfortable position
As for Asik, this won't hurt his value, when he hits free agency in 2015. His value will be judged from his performance in 2014-2015 season. A competent hook shoot can earn him an extra 3 million per year.
Do you think a chance to develop his offense and become two way players worth a season of uncertainty? weight in
