As most of you know, the rockets start camp in a week and will be taking 19 warm bodies with them. They get to keep 15 of them. There will be 4 guys looking for work when the season starts. In a somewhat different twist, all these guys will get paid to some extent so the usual suspects without contracts are not in play. Les is going to have to pay all these guys some cash which makes the level of competition a bit more intense. Also, assets are no longer a prime concern, win now is the mantra.
All these things considered, how do we get to 15 players? The most precarious two spots likely belong to BJ Young and Jordan Henriquez. Both are undrafted rookies on partially guaranteed deals and both play positions we are deep at. To say they will be under pressure to play well is a huge understatement.
Reggie Williams, Robert Covington, Aaron Brooks and Ronnie Brewer make up the next group. Isaiah Canaan would make this group if not for getting drafted and having a slightly more secure deal, if only slightly. Covington seems to have some fans on our staff and if Canaan plays well it could be hard for ABZ to stick. Williams seems a good fit to give Harden some needed rest off the bench but there are several folks looking to fill that spot.
One wild card in this is Greg Smith. He is on the last year of his contract so a trade is not out of the question. On the other hand, word is he has outworked his fellow players in the offseason and might come to camp and make someone else expendable.
The one certain thing in all this is the level of competition for roster spots will be intense. That said, who do you think will surprise and why? With a week till the fun begins, lets see who can identify the next roster. Also, how many of the 4 guys that we cut will end up on another NBA roster?
