Full disclaimer: I am a Boston Celtics fan.
I appreciate what the Rockets have done recently as the Celtics now find themselves in a very similar situation. There have been a few ideas tossed around Celtics sites about facilitating a trade for Asik, and I'm wondering what package the average Rockets fan would be happy or comfortable with to get a deal done.
From Celtics perspective, Asik is a stud, but so is Dwight Howard. Having both is a huge luxury, especially when you have Camby, Smith and Henriquez off the bench. There was talk about a Ryan Anderson trade, but seemed to not have any legs.
In Boston, we have a glut of PFs and SGs and no true Center. It seems like Asik is looking to continue to grow in a starting Center role on an NBA team and feels like he may not be a good fit next to Dwight. With a player option, Asik will command a serious contract as an unrestricted free agent, one that the Rockets surely won't look to outbid.
So, how about:
Brandon Bass (6M)
Courtney Lee (5M)
2014 Nets 1st round pick
Brandon Bass gives you that stretch 4 guy. He can start or come off the bench. He can knock down the mid-range jump-shot and shoots a +.800 career free throw. If you saw the playoff series against the Knicks, he shut down Carmelo Anthony better than anyone could have expected. He is strong and knows his role. He is a hard worker.
I'm sure you are aware of Courtney Lee. Lee didn't quite fit into the rebuilding plans in Houston, but now as a back-up to Harden he comes off the bench as a defensive specialist. His three point shot suffered last year, but you can see that the struggles came mostly from the early season. I think he's poised to rebound back to the + .400 from behind the arc.
If Rocket fans are not keen on seeing a Courtney return, would you prefer Jordan Crawford or Marshon Brooks?
I'm curious to see what package would get a deal done, at least from a fan perspective.
