Rockets release Dexter Pittman, may sign Josh Powell

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Rockets cut Greg Smith on Thursday to sign Dexter Pittman. Before the center appeared for the Rockets, the team cut him.

Well, that was quick. About 72 hours after the Rockets signed him, Dexter Pittman has been cut. The move was made today, potentially to sign Josh Powell, who has been playing in the Philippines this season, writes Jonathan Feigen. Pittman signed his contract, but did not travel with the team or appear on the bench in any games, making his signing something of a mystery.

Now, Josh Powell appears to be coming into the fold. Powell has bounced around quite a bit, last appearing for the Hawks in 2011, and has been playing internationally since then. He is a big man that seems likely to sit at the end of the bench in the playoffs and collect dust, but he may be called upon for some minutes in the last two games, especially if the Rockets clinch home court advantage before the season finale.

Regardless, this carousel of big men is a bit odd. Greg Smith cleared waivers after being cut on Thursday, but his replacement didn't even get a jersey or locker before being sent away. I'm sure Daryl Morey has a plan, but I don't know exactly what it is.
