Game 68 Recap: Lowry's 18 Off The Bench Gives Rockets Enough For 116-112 Victory Over Knicks
This one got a little too close. Luckily, Aaron Brooks knows how to make shots that nearly hit the rafters before falling through the nets. And Kevin Martin is really, really good. So is Chase Budinger. And Jordan Hill. But, mostly, we can thank Kyle Lowry for being awesome.
Notice the pattern here? We're beginning to witness a return to balanced scoring. I liked our three-headed monster era while it lasted, but if one of those guys had a bad night, then the chances of snagging a win suddenly tanked. This growing distribution of points and minutes also bodes well for one Luis Scola. We like to see him on the court, but not for forty minutes per game every night.
This brings up an interesting debate under the long-term vs. short-term masthead: how much do the Rockets want show off Scola for potential free agent suitors? They're obviously trying to make a playoff run, and in this respect, playing Scola as often as possible is a no-brainer decision, end of story. But his numbers can get awfully inflated and (gasp!) attractive if he is getting star-level minutes on a nightly basis. Does this possibly affect our chances of re-signing him in the off-season? It's doubtful that the amount of money he is offered changes dramatically over one semester's worth of performances, but it's something to think about. The Rockets should and will continue to play blind to this scenario for the sake of, well, winning. But from a fan's perspective, you have to weigh the options, because on most days, there isn't a whole lot else to think about.
Also, I think Jordan Hill is quickly solving Scola's minutes issue quite aptly, by playing out of his mind. I'm hoping this keeps up.
Quickly, while the Knicks may have shot lights-out for most of the game, that was some pitiful defense. Yuck. Thank the lord that Bill Walker went 1-7 from behind the arc or else this could have been a tough L. As Jason Friedman tweeted, Danilo Gallnari wasn't this wide open during the three-point shootout.
(um... hey Tracy.)

Game 68 Preview: Rockets at Knicks
It's the Return of the Mack. T-Mac, that is. This game might be a little similar to the Kings game when Landry was with them. Except it's in New York. And Rockets fans don't really like T-Mac as much as Landry. And the Knicks didn't really like Jordan Hill. Other than that, the exact same situation.
That playoff spot seems to slip further and further away every day. These Rockets have been a surprise, but I don't see a big-time run to close out the season. But, I've been wrong about this team before. You never know.
The Knicks are all about LeBronapalooza. Or, at the very least, the summer of Joe Johnson/Amare. I'm not convinced LeBron will leave Cleveland, but don't tell the New York media. Unfortunately, the team is so focused on superstars they won't be getting their best player, David Lee, back next year. Guy's a stud.
Also, day games suck. Even in the City that Never Sleeps.

Game 67 Recap: Rockets Lose to Celtics 94-87
Pay no heed to the "Boston isn't a title contender" talk. All that ever matters in the playoffs is one's ability to make it to the next round, not whether or not you can beat the best team in the next conference, or even the best team in your own. The Celtics can beat great teams, they just haven't been pulling it off recently, and so the NBA sphere wants to write them off.
So it shouldn't be surprising that the Rockets lost last night. The Celtics can beat great teams, and the Rockets aren't a great team. They're a team with a high-scoring backcourt and some significant defensive issues. The Celtics, on the other hand, boast one of the best point guards in the game, a collection of aging-but-not-dead talent, and (most importantly) the strongest defense in the league, built on the contribution of guys like Rondo, Perkins, and Garnett.
And Boston matches up well against the current Rockets squad. Rondo and, surprisingly, Allen pulled off an excellent defensive game against Brooks and Martin, keeping both from getting off shots for most of the night. Their interior defense was just too strong for Scola and Co. to do much against, though their efforts were generally more effective than those of their backcourt counterparts.
Speaking of the frontcourt, I think this game showcased this team's need for Yao pretty spectacularly. On the offensive end, the Rockets needed someone to throw the ball to in the low post, and Scola and Hill were largely getting pushed out of the paint by Davis and Perkins.
The need for Yao on the defensive end is a little more glaring, I think. Sure, there's the rebounding issue - everyone gets pushed around while trying to box out, and while Yao was never the best rebounder, he took up a lot of space and that means a lot. Even this late into the season, the Rockets still get burned on pick-and-rolls. It's as if Brooks gets hit with a pick, looks at the ball handler streaking towards the basket, and says to himself, "Fuck it. It's the frontcourt's problem now." Screw fighting through the pick, because one of the big guys will handle it.
A year ago, that worked. Brooks could fail to fight through the play, and the giant Chinese guy would move towards the basket. It wasn't the best move to keep Yao out of foul trouble, but it helped create one of the best defensive teams in the game.
Okay, so that's the problem - 7'6" Center is no longer there. But it's freaking game 67, right? Everyone should have adjusted by now.
Well, the issue is twofold. First, I think that, to whatever degree, these are just the players we have. Brooks is probably never going to not get totally burned on defense. That's just who he is. I doubt the coaching staff has failed to adjust their schemes, and we know they've played some great defense at times, so it has to come down to the players.Second, Boston is just such a physical team, and I imagine that this upset the Rockets quite a bit, even on defense. Particularly when they pressure the ball enough to generate 16 turnovers and outscore the Rockets on the fastbreak.
In the end, the Rockets just weren't able to execute their offense, nor were they able to maintain any sort of defensive discipline. Boston was just too good on the defensive end for the Rockets to get anything done without a stronger low-post threat, and the bench simply wasn't able to make it up.

Game 67: Rockets vs. Celtics
Thank you, NBA Schedulers, for yet another oddity. The Rockets played all four of their games versus Dallas before January started, so their first game against Boston comes in late March. Good times.

Game 67 Preview: Celtics at Rockets
Oh, goodness. The Rockets have won four in a row. Crazy. The Celtics come into town riding a two game winning streak, picking up two quality homes wins against the Knicks and Pistons. The Rockets, on the other hand, have won two big games in a row, and as it has been for the last week and for the rest of the season, this is a must-win.
The Celtics are 43-24, but don't let that fool you. This team is not a championship contender anymore. Danny Ainge sold this team's soul to get Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, and the team is paying for it now. Injuries, especially to KG, have hurt them this season. But, they're perfectly healthy again and ready for the Rockets.
The last time these teams met, the Rockets won a thriller in Boston, and really propelled themselves out of a dark place. The team had been slumping and needed a signature win early in the season. At this point, every game for the Rockets needs to be a signature win. This game is like the largest size available at Cold Stone Creamery: Gotta Have It.

Carmelo Anthony Called For Traveling Back In Time
Clearly, the Onion's writers have been listening to Bill Worrell complain too much, or at least they've been reading our game threads.

Game 66 Recap: Rockets 107 - Grizzlies 94
As a special Dreamshake service to our loyal readers tonight's recap will be presented in a phony Irish accent in "honor" of St. Patricks Day. Since you can't hear it, you'll just have to imagine it. Or go here and choose "Caitlin" to read the recap to you. (You really should.)
Aaron Brooks certainly felt the luck of the Irish tonight. Anytime you score 31pts on 14 attempts and make 7-7 3pters you should kiss the Blarney stone, or something. Perhaps it's because he's a leprechaun? I have to say that unlike Dave, my one-way relationship with Aaron is pretty much Love/Love.
This was an odd game. The Rockets looked horrible at the start of the game, and progressively got better. They went from being abused in the paint, and looking as though the whole team was in competition to discover new and inventive ways to turn the ball over, to coasting along for an easy win. Memphis is a close match in record, and is assumed to be our equal or better in talent, but once again the Rockets seemed to somehow turn on the jets, from the end of the 2nd quarter until midway through the 4th, and break the will of the Grizzlies yet again.
