The Rockets look to win their sixth straight game in the nation’s capital

A little over two weeks ago, the Houston Rockets had five road wins are were nine games below .500. Since then, the Rockets have gone 7-1, winning four straight games on the road. A win tonight would double Houston total road wins in a span of 16 days.

Of course, the Rockets just played the Washington Wizards five days ago. In that game, every Rockets starter scored in double digits and shot 60% or better from the field. They were led by Jalen Green’s 37 points, which helped send him to Western Conference Player of the Week.

The Jalen discourse is heating up, and the long and the short of it is this: he’s playing for an extension, and a good showing down the stretch could ensure that he’s signed on to the Rockets for several years beyond 2024-25.

The Wizards have several players on their injury report. Either some of them will come off it in time for tip-off or the Rockets will be playing a full-on G-League team.

Jalen Green’s stellar play of late is rewarded as the NBA announced Green is the Western Conference Player of The Week.

The Houston Rockets have been one of the best teams the last couple of weeks, winning five in a row, seven of their last eight games and surprisingly making a push for a play-in spot. One of the biggest reasons for the Rockets' turnaround has been the play of Jalen Green.

On Monday, the NBA recognized Green's stellar play by awarding the Houston Rockets shooting guard the Western Conference Player of the Week award. The Rockets went 3-0 last week, including a dominating performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers this past Saturday.

Green averaged 26.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game last week. It wasn't just his offense that stood out. His defense has improved from his first two seasons and was on full display vs. the Cavs.

Green's improved play couldn't have come at a better time with the injuries to Alperen Sengun and Cam Whitmore. Green has been the catalyst for the Rocket's turnaround, and now the NBA is taking notice as this is Green's first-ever Player of the Week award.

The Rockets will be back in action Tuesday vs the Washington Wizards as they continue their improbable run to a possible play-in spot.

How much will change without the big man in the middle?

With the good news being that Alperen Sengun has avoided a catastrophic fracture or tear, we can now pivot to what we should observe over the Houston Rockets’ final 15 games of the regular season. In all likelihood, the severe ankle sprain and bone bruise to the knee have ended Sengun’s season.

I will only touch on Sengun’s replacement options briefly as Charles has already outlined that for the readers of TDS.

Had this injury occurred later on or lingered into the start of next season, it’s likely that we would have got an extended view of Steven Adams, as he himself will be returning from two straight injury-riddled seasons. For now, we’ll get to see how much Jabari Smith Jr. can handle as he anchors the paint.

Although he’s proven to be a more polished one-on-one defender, this offers a great opportunity to see Jabari’s capacity to handle larger tasks, literally. If this final stretch of the season goes well with Bari at the five, it will open up so many doors for the Rockets in terms of small-ball lineups and stretching the floor.

What’s also worth monitoring is how Jock Landale closes out this season with more playing time up for grabs. He’s played much better over the past month considering that the beginning of his Rockets tenure started off rocky due to injuries. He may be able to carve out a spot on next year’s roster as the third center on the roster as Steven Adams will need time to acclimate back to the grind of the frantic NBA season.

As for what to monitor that isn’t specific to filling the minutes that were occupied by Sengun, how about the flow of offense for one? Who takes charge now with the team’s leading scorer out of commission? It has to be one of the guards, right?

The playmaking decisions that were once handled by Sengun will primarily fall into the hands of Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green. This will likely be Green’s best opportunity to showcase that he’s still an integral part of the Rockets’ future.

In fairness to Green, he's been showing it as of late.

Now of course the tandem of Sengun and Green will need to complement each other while on the court together to fully deem this as a success, but in the short term, Green can take the spotlight and exhibit himself as an individual capable of carrying his team.

No stranger to carrying a heavy load, VanVleet will also have to shoulder more responsibility as not only a setup man, but also as a scorer. He’ll be earning every penny he made this past offseason should he be up to the task. It appears that he understands that too given his play during the Rockets win streak.

If there has been one benefit to going Alpi-less for an extended period, it’s that Amen Thompson has received a full runway towards valuable minutes. Even prior to Sengun’s injury, I think we all have loved Amen’s role in the dunker spot.

Although he was projected as the point guard of the future, he’s been more of a wing and now thrusted into a power forward role in part to his limited shooting ability and VanVleet’s presence. Thankfully, that hasn’t been an issue as he’s embraced his role early on his career and has flourished around the rim.

I’m not sure I’ve seen a player this young with his physical attributes that excels on the offensive board the way that he does, especially considering that he is once again, supposed to be a guard.

Swinging back to Smith Jr., this will probably be his best chance to display the offensive repertoire he showed at Auburn. With more shots suddenly available, he can make a legitimate case that he shouldn’t have been passed up so quick on the priority list. It wouldn’t sit right with me that the third pick of a draft has already been relegated to a fourth option at best.

Of the highest-ranking interests to me, I wonder how significant the difference with and without Sengun is for all of the people that highlight his defensive limitations. As mentioned before, the small-ball possibilities that exist with Bari at the five are now up for display. With Bari, Amen and Dillon Brooks on the court, the Rockets will have as versatile of a defensive trio as you can get.

VanVleet is no slouch, despite his stature, and Green has made enough strides on that end to suggest that a co-mutual existence between him and Udoka’s desired level of defense can’t be ruled out.

It’s unfortunate that we aren’t able to get some combination of the players listed above with Tari Eason in the lineup during this stretch without Alpi. The range of strength, speed and hoops IQ could have made for some nightmarish evenings for opponents. Alas, we’ll have to wait until next season to see what that combination looks like.

For now, we’ll see if there’s any sort of slippage, or a glaring improvement on the defensive side. Either way, it’s safe to say that Sengun has already proven himself to be indispensable. Regardless of whatever limitations he may have, you live with them, because the good he provides outweighs those constraints.

The Rockets look to extend their winning streak to 5 against the visiting Cavs

Remember how over the past two seasons, this was the “Did the Rockets mess up by not taking Evan Mobley” game? Never mind that Mobley didn’t work out for the Rockets, or that the Rockets didn’t have the guard talent to allow Mobley to thrive. If Mobley had a good game or Jalen Green had a poor one, it was PROOF that Rafael Stone had screwed up.

We always think that the top picks will be the ones duking it out. Cade Cunningham vs. Green. Mobley vs. Scottie Barnes. Jalen Suggs vs. Josh Giddey.

Except, a funny thing happened. The best player in the 2021 NBA Draft wasn’t taken in the top 3 picks. Or the top 10. He lasted all the way to 16. And the team famed for its genius draft evaluation traded that pick away to a new GM trying to prove himself.

Of course, Alperen Sengun won’t be playing tonight. Neither will Evan Mobley, who’s recovering from an ankle injury of his own. The Cavs are in third place in the Eastern Conference, just one down in the win column compared to the Milwaukee Bucks. It’s a testament to J.B. Bickerstaff, who finally seems to have an outright hold of a head coaching job after two interim stints (one with Houston and another with Memphis that turned into a full-time job for a single season).

But of All The Thompson Gunners, Amen Was The Best | Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Not Playing The Odds

There’s something I’d like to get clear. The Rockets aren’t tanking. At all. That’s over. This is, after all, Phase Two. Phase Two has some lovely scenery, but is still definitely under construction. What is not in the plan for the build out of Phase Two is a tank. Military, water, gas, fish, air, or otherwise, no tanks are currently in the Rockets plans.

On the ESPN podcast “The Hoop Collective” earlier this week Brian Windhorst suggested, at windy length, that the Rockets might consider optimizing their lottery odds by basically packing it in for the rest of the season.

The idea being that since the Rockets could, might, possibly, improve their NBA Draft Lottery odds, and thus, perhaps, conceivably, maybe, retain their pick at #1-4. If the Rockets pick 1-4 they don’t send their pick to OKC as part of the ongoing radioactive fallout of the Russell Westbrook trade that killed the Harden era Rockets dream of contention stone dead.

(Daryl Morey has perhaps learned that sometimes management has to manage, rather than simply enable, even if you have commissioned a large oil painting of the enabled subject in question. Does Daryl still have that painting? If so, where is it? Is he still going to take a gap year and hike the Appalachian Trail? We may never know. )

This is, of course, entirely my opinion, but in answer to Mr. Windhorst: No.

The Rockets are not going to tank. Of course losing Alperen Sengun was a big blow to the team’s competitiveness. He’s unquestionably their best player right now. But Alperen Sengun, as good as he is, isn’t totally essential to the Rockets chances of winning games the same way a player like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Nikola Jokic is to their respective teams. Without those players I’d submit that neither team is a playoff team, let alone a contender.

The Rockets, due to youth, due to their system and philosophy, simply aren’t built that way. People complain about the number of shots certain players take, but it’s rare than any Rockets breaks twenty attempts. This isn’t the Harden Rockets. The Rockets offense is an ensemble effort, even if it looks like that ensemble isn’t especially empowered to play what they like most, at times. Success will bring happiness, too.

There are downsides to this proposition, and the system may well change if a clear #1 emerges for the team (or it may not), but the Rockets are also built to survive injury better than a heliocentric team. (Even though Jokic is one of the most willing passers in the NBA, Denver orbits their Serbian sun like no other team.)

So, no, I do not believe the Rockets intend to pack it in, increase their odds, and take on another draft prospect in a draft filled with projects, rather than polished, players. I think mostly what the Rockets tanking the rest of the season could do is simply give McDuck of Oklahoma City a better pick. Why on earth would anyone do that?

The Rockets are still getting a very nice Brooklyn pick, and that’s plenty, I think.

Though this is simply my personal opinion, the direction of the Rockets for the remaining 17 games is not “Tankwards”.
