In a few weeks we'll see the very colorful Calvin Murphy, in his signature suits, again on the Rockets broadcast. This time he'll be in a new role and he couldn't be more excited. Murphy will host the pregame, halftime and postgame shows. He looks forward to talking basketball and adding his flavor to the new broadcasts. But that first time back will definitely be emotional.
"I feel like my rookie year, getting ready to go, and my first day into rookie camp," Murphy says. "I'm nervous. I'm apprehensive. I'm excited. I can't wait for this to happen."
This wonderful news is according to CultureMap Houston (which looks like it has a fancy new layout of its own).
I think it's safe to say that the Rockets' TV color commentary has taken a dip ever since Murphy departed. I like Matt Bullard and I respect the job that he does. I like Clyde Drexler and I think there are many, many more qualified and talented candidates than he to do the job that he does. But Murphy was a fantastic mix of lively color and smart commentary, which basically describes the position.
Where does this leave Kevin Eschenfelder, who presumably will wind up at Comcast as well? We'll see. I think they'd pair Murphy and Eschenfelder together, since Murphy doesn't seem like the one-man host type. But at least we'll get to see Murphy back in some form, so this is a welcome decision. Welcome back, Calvin!
