Here's the update on Calvin Murphy we were looking for, from the Houston Chronicle's David Barron:
Murphy, who was removed from the team's broadcasts 8 ½ years ago in the midst of legal issues that resulted in his eventual acquittal, will work as a studio analyst on Rockets pregame and postgame shows on CSN Houston. Bill Worrell, Clyde Drexler and Matt Bullard will return as game broadcasters.
As I said before, I think Murphy did a great job as a color commentator back when he partnered with Bill Worrell. Having him in-studio makes sense, but this could be part of a transition back to his old in-game broadcast job. I sure hope it is, at least.
It's tough to pinpoint exactly what went wrong with FSN's Rockets coverage (the ratings were terrible), but I think the Clyde Drexler/Worrell pairing has been an ugly one, and while I believe Matt Bullard does a good job, he's not the type of name that will keep bringing people back to a broadcast. Worrell may have worn out his welcome with some, but there are so many biased announcers in the NBA that for me, Worrell's superb homerism doesn't quite tune out his thoughtful candor and emotional investment in the team that we hear during his broadcasts. I grew up listening to that voice through the good and the bad, and I have to say, hearing Bill call a basketball game truly has its comforts.
That's all for now. We'll keep this stream updated for CSN news as it appears, or anything else Rockets coverage-related.
