Former Rockets executive Gersson Rosas and Mavericks part ways

Gersson Rosas left the Rockets this summer to join the Mavericks. His tenure didn't last long.

Well, that was quick. Just three months after the Mavericks hired Gersson Rosas away from the Rockets, the two parties have split, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. Rosas spent nine years with the Rockets, helping rebuild the roster from the McGrady-Yao era to the Harden and Howard-led roster we see today, and was hired as the General Manager of the Mavericks this summer to help start a similar rebuilding effort there.

Apparently, things did not go as planned. According to Marc Stein, there were questions of "fit" almost immediately after Rosas came on board in Dallas. Given that he was going from a fairly relaxed ownership situation in Houston to one in Dallas with one of the most involved owners in the league, that difficulty might have been expected for Rosas. Looking back through old articles about Rosas, however, I read something that I found particularly funny in light of today's split.

This, from Adrian Wojnarowski of Y! Sports:

For Mavs owner Mark Cuban and president Donnie Nelson, the hiring of Rosas is a coup for an organization that has been committed to finding a way to strengthen its basketball operations. Rosas will be given significant latitude to shape the direction of the franchise's pro and college personnel departments, free agency and scouting.

Apparently, that latitude that Wojnarowski spoke of never came to fruition. Neither Rosas nor the Mavericks were willing to make significant changes to their philosophies, and thus it didn't work out.

With Rosas out in Dallas, the question remains whether the Rockets or Rosas would be open to a reunion. The Rockets have already filled his position with promotions from within, and Rosas might not want to take a step down after reaching the highest position an NBA executive can have, so it may be unlikely. Still, until Rosas joins another front office, many will speculate on his potential to return to the Rockets.
