Today, the Rockets officially announced that they have requested waivers on forward Akil Mitchell and signed guard Geron Johnson, while big man Josh Powell is on the way out as well, according to Shams Charania of RealGM.com.
Neither Mitchell nor Powell saw much of the floor during preseason, and obviously they didn't make much of an impression in practice either. No big shock in either player's case.
Geron Johnson did play on the Rockets' summer league squads in both Vegas and Orlando, so even though he hasn't been around in preseason, this isn't out of the blue. He played shooting guard for Memphis for the past two years, averaging nearly 9 points in 28 minutes a game. DraftExpress profiles him as an athletic project without refinement, but with intriguing passing skills, high defensive ceiling (he's 6'3" with a 6'8" wingspan) and the embryo of a jump shot. He'll presumably head to the D-League.
There are still a couple more roster moves to be made in the week leading up to the start of the regular season next Thursday(!), October 29th.
