Leftovers and basketball thoughts: Reflections on the Rockets after Thanksgiving

New, comments

There is lots to be thankful for in Rockets land.

NBA: Houston Rockets at Memphis Grizzlies Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

As I sit preparing to deliver the food baby inside me, here are some thoughts on what to be thankful for in Rockets world right now:

  • The Rockets are in first place in the Western Conference roughly a quarter of the way through the season, and they have a win over the Warriors.
  • James Harden and Chris Paul remain undefeated in games they’ve played together
  • Clint Capela has taken a leap to become one of the best young centers in the league, a bona fide double-double machine capable of dominating the rim on both ends.
  • Luc Richard Mbah a Moute is maybe, possibly, the Rockets’ fifth-best player.
  • Eric Gordon is finally living up to his potential as a two-way beast of a player.
  • P.J. Tucker being a tough SOB and the perfect replacement for Patrick Beverley (get well soon, Bev!)
  • Trevor Ariza kicking his early-season shooting woes and returning to his perch as one of the most solid role players in the league
  • Houston Astros, World Series Champions.
  • My mom made key lime pie for dessert yesterday, shoutout to moms.
  • This dribbling wizardry:
  • James Harden cookin’ folks
  • James Harden casual behind-the-back passes to Ryan Anderson three-pointers
  • Ryno, defending
  • Brothers who make me laugh basically every second we’re around each other, even though all growing up we were readying to kill each other.
  • Parents who are far too generous with their sons, and grateful for every moment without nagging about not having enough.
  • Being three months away from fully paying off my car.
  • The Mavericks are garbage.
  • The Jazz are falling apart.
  • The Spurs seems like less of a threat than they have in a long time (until Kawhi comes back).
  • We live in an age where if I miss a Rockets game, I can watch it the next morning on any screen, without commercials.
  • My beautiful girlfriend/life partner and our life in D.C.
  • Zhou Qi, my large, adult son who will soon rule over the NBA.
  • Bobby Brown, Professional Best Friend.
  • Daryl Morey, He Who Shall Never Be Fired.
  • Hakeem Olajuwon, forever and forever.
