The Rockets are back at the Toyota Center tonight for a home-and-home against the shiny, gold Nuggets of Denver. As coincidental as it is for a team named the Nuggets to be associated with possibly the biggest pot tourism city in the country, the name actually comes from the 19th-century gold rush in the state of Colorado and the gold nuggets that were panned from local rivers, streams and creeks.
The team was actually originally named the Larks, and then were known as the Rockets in the ABA until 1974, when they were forced to change their name in favor of our favorite squad with the merger on it’s way, so there’s a little bit of a historical connection between these two teams. Most of you probably already knew that, but I’m sure there’s some fans out there who didn’t. I’ve been an NBA fan since I was 10, but had no idea about the history of their nickname until I was in college (that was a long time ago).
Anyway, I’ll be looking for a second Houston victory over Denver tonight. Don’t forget to check out AK’s preview, and be certain to shame him if the Rockets lose. He’ll be at the game and they lost once already with AK in the house.
Hopefully, it won’t come to that.
