My wedding featured a surprise statement from Daryl Morey

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey sent a joke statement on plus-minus which was read during my wedding ceremony this weekend.

On Saturday I got married. My friends made a perfect day both hilarious and authentic by securing and reading a statement from Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey during the wedding ceremony.

I grew up going to Houston Rockets games at the Summit, then the Toyota Center. I listened to the 1994 championship on the radio from a Boy Scout summer camp. The 1995 title I watched while standing on a coffee table.

During college I once looked up from a card table in a less-than-licensed Houston poker house and recognized Matt Maloney taking a seat at the table.

At the age of 33, I can still wear the Clyde Drexler blue jersey I got for my birthday in middle school. I’m the monster who owns a Rockets jersey for their cat and for the past five years I’ve been an erratic writer for The Dream Shake.

By reasonable metrics I qualify as a lifelong Rockets fan.

Life takes some fun turns. I left Houston 11 years ago and have lived in 7 states since then. I’m elated to have fallen in love with my wife and her home state of Montana, where we live.

Imagine my surprise when standing in a field on a Montana mountain top, a friend I’ve had since elementary school breaks out a tongue-in-cheek congratulatory wedding statement from Daryl Morey during the ceremony.

My dad and I loved it.

I have to thank Dr. Sam Cook who secured the statement and is the pride of Edinburg, Texas, and Michael Jaynes, a lifelong friend who owned the Dreamcast we played countless matches of NBA 2K on. Not NBA 2K the series, the original NBA 2K with Allen Iverson on the cover.

Oh yes, and Daryl Morey. Not only is he the NBA’s best general manager, but someone who is clearly willing to embrace his strange celebrity and allow others to have a good time with it.

The best part of it all... I was wearing my Hakeem Olajuwon socks.
