Although the NBA offseason is currently in full swing, interest in the NBA does not seem to be waning. Oddsmakers have already placed their predictions for the 2022-23 season wins and bettors are placing their wagers on their favorite teams. If you haven’t, you can do so at Ignition Ignition Casino. That said, NBA teams have been known to perform unexpectedly in the last few months and there is no reason this season should be different.
The Suns scored 64-18 last season – eight games better than all NBA teams. Sadly, they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the playoffs, ending the season at a particularly low point. There was also some back and forth surrounding center Deandre Ayton’s free agency but the Suns signed a four-year contract with him, improving the team’s odds once again. Moreover, the team has beefed up its lineup with additions like Damion Lee, the former Warriors reserve and defensive ace Josh Okogie. The frontcourt rotation will be completed by reserve big man Dario Saric, who has recovered from his injury. Point guard Chris Paul, who although is 37 was one of the best players in the league last season, will also be playing. Add this to the fact that the Suns places among the top five in offense and defense last season and they could easily take eth league this year.
The Denver Nuggets are currently ranked as the 10th most likely team to win the championship this year. However, they could easily catapult to the top five. Two seasons ago, the Nuggets were top title contenders until they lost point guard Jamal Murray to an injury. He is back now and could significantly boost their chances. The Nuggets were dismissed by the Golden State Warriors in the 2021-2022 season but had actually had a good run until then, entering the playoffs in sixth place. They played without Murray and Michael Porter Jr., who is also back this season. Moreover, the team has replaced Will Barton with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on the wing, who is by far a better defender and shooter. These and more changes in the lineup promise to improve for the Nuggets.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Trail Blazers had a disappointing run last season. Damian Lillard, their star point guard, suffered an injury and had his worst career season yet, with the team finishing 27-55. Even worse, they traded veterans like Robert Covington, the nifty wing defender, and shooting guard Norman Powell. This season, the Blazers have arranged the team around Lillard, who remained on the bench the season’s entire second half, so he should be fine. They have also traded for some impressive names, including the skilled forward Jerami Grant and Gary Payton II, who is one of basketball’s best perimeter defenders, while locking up combo guard Anfernee Simons and center Jusuf Nurkic. Consequently, the Blazers could have one of the best starting lineups this season and do way better than they did last year.
The Cleveland Cavaliers went 44-38 last season, going 3-7 in their last 10 games and missing the playoffs by losing two straight play-in matches. These numbers spell disaster for the Cavs, which explains their low ratings. However, they were 35-23 this season despite their very young lineup and many injuries. nba.com stats show that they finished fifth in defense and twentieth in offense last season, which shows that its defense has some potential. In fact, in more than a thousand minutes with Evan Mobley at power forward and Allen at center, the team gave up less than 104 points for every 100 possessions. These stats are a few points better than the best defense for the Celtics last season. The offense might cost them a little but if Mobley and Allen remain in top shape, the Cavs could reach the top five.
The Pacers are somewhat of a wild card and oddsmakers have ranked them as one of the season’s worst teams. This is probably due to their 25-57 score last season, one of the NBA's worst defenses, and an average offense. Moreover, the team traded away Domantas Sabonis, their best player, and Malcolm Brogdon who was also a solid point guard. Still, there are some reasons to hold out hope. Rick Carlisle is an excellent coach and might improve the Pacers’ play enough for it to matter and Tyrese Haliburton just joined the team. Haliburton has a strange shooting form but his rare ability to run an offense without dominating the ball is highly efficient and allows his game to combine seamlessly with other players. He is also a great shooter from all positions and is a good passer. Since joining the Pacers, he has averaged 10 assists per game in 26 matches.
There is still some time left in this NBA season, which means that any one of these teams could pull a roundabout and perform beyond our expectations.
