Houston Rockets vs. Memphis Grizzlies game preview

The Houston Rockets head to Memphis to complete the home-and-home series against the Grizzlies

NBA: Playoffs-Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Lakers Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

It’s always tough playing the same twice in a row.

The Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks got into a bit of a fracas Wednesday night over a game ball (that Giannis Antetokounmpo said was for Damian Lillard but now Giannis has it?). Afterwards, Rick Carlisle said that the teams had played each other three times in fewer than three weeks. So the familiarity bred tension that spilled into the tunnel after the game. Real ones remember the Staples Center tunnel that Chris Paul famously took to confront his former team while he was a member of the Houston Rockets.

Further compounding the issue tonight will be the return of Dillon Brooks to Memphis, where he spent his first six seasons. As a mid-second round pick, Brooks was a welcome surprise for the upstart Grizzlies, but his antics on and off the court clearly rubbed the organization wrongly enough that he wasn’t really pursued by the Grizz during free agency. I’m sure Memphis fans don’t blame Brooks alone for Memphis’s playoff no-show last year, and I’m sure they’ll be classy and respectful towards him tonight.

Yeah, I doubt it too.

So expect some fireworks tonight between the Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies. Maybe not to the same extent, but there’s always a chance. Houston is riding a four-game winning streak and looking to grab their second road victory of the season. Before Houston knocked off the Nuggets in Denver, this game was the one that looked the most gettable for the Rockets in 2023. After tonight, they only have three road games left this month, and all three involve a back-to-back. So, you know, tough.

I’m sure some player(s) will be out with this nasty bug that’s going around. Hopefully everyone can get healthy soon.
