Rockets assign Amen Thompson to Rio Grande Valley

The Rockets are getting their first-round pick back soon.

The Houston Rockets received some good news today. Amen Thompson is one step closer to making his return to an NBA court when the team announced this morning that they are assigning him to the Rockets’ G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Thompson last played in a game for the Rockets on November 1, missing the past month with a grade 2 ankle sprain, but his return is imminent, as the Rockets are allowing him to get his conditioning up with the Vipers.

Houston really needs Thompson back in the fold, as the second unit continues to struggle with consistency, though Aaron Holiday has played relatively well as the backup point guard in Thompson’s stead.

Amen currently holds modest stats of 6.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in 16.8 minutes per night over just four contests, but expect those minutes and numbers to rise as he gets healthy and back on the court.

I wouldn’t expect the stay in Rio Grande Valley to be too long — maybe a week or two — and as you can see by Lachard’s tweet, Cam Whitmore is heading back too, so the duo will have a chance to build some chemistry with minutes alongside one another. All good stuff for the future of this season and beyond.

Welcome back, Amen! Can’t wait to see you with the varisty again!
