It’s Houston or bust for Carmelo Anthony. Cleveland is no longer in the running.

Well, after another week when it appeared we may be close to a Carmelo Anthony trade, only to have it not materialize, things have slowed down a bit.

We know what the Rockets are thinking: get Carmelo, give up Ryan Anderson, likely to a third team, hopefully throw in draft picks and some other minor pieces, and then proceed trying to hunt down the Golden State Warriors out West.

We don’t really know what the Knicks are thinking, other than trying not to get torched by Rockets GM Daryl Morey. They were hoping to reincorporate ‘Melo once GM Scott Perry was hired, in the hopes of remaking the troubled relationship between star and front office, but it appears for now, at least from Anthony’s standpoint, that bridge has been burned. Though the Knicks certainly are trying.

But we do know what Anthony is thinking, and it appears to be: Houston or bust.

According to Mark Berman of the New York Post, Carmelo will now only waive his no-trade clause for the Rockets. Originally, Anthony was also willing to go to Cleveland, but with the recent developments there with Kyrie Irving, he’s changed his mind on going to the Cavaliers. Per Berman:

A stalemate has ensued as sources indicate Anthony only wishes to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Rockets. Not even Cleveland, which is in turmoil, is good enough for Anthony as the Cavaliers are dealing with Kyrie Irving’s trade demand.

The Knicks haven’t completely give up hope, however, as The Post is also reporting that the recent signing of point guard Ramon Sessions was done specifically with Anthony in mind. New Knicks management is holding out for the moment on moving Melo, with the hopes of keeping him around, or at the very least, regaining some of the leverage lost in these very public trade demands:

The Knicks’ management tandem of Steve Mills-Scott Perry claim it won’t trade Anthony to Houston unless it cobbles together a solid deal that makes sense for the Knicks’ future. Nothing has materialized.

In fact, a source told The Post the signing of veteran point guard Ramon Sessions partly was due to him connecting better with Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis than did Derrick Rose, who left for Cleveland via free agency.

So for now, at least, it appears we’re not any closer to a resolution in the Melo matter, but with Anthony stripping down the teams he’s willing to waive his no-trade clause for to just one — the Rockets — it looks like it’s Houston or bust for Carmelo.

Just in case you need clarification, “bust” is staying with the Knicks.

After a brief quiet period, Melo to H-town again sounds like it’s going to happen.

Just yesterday, our own Max Croes laid out some reasoning why the New York Knicks, for their own benefit, shouldn’t wait any longer on dealing Carmelo to the Houston Rockets. Well, it appears the Knicks were listening, because the rumors have once again picked up recently, starting off with this report from the L.A. Daily News.

Very solid source close to HOU tells me that Carmelo Anthony is likely to be a Rocket by early this coming week. Stay tuned..
— Tarek Fattal (@Tarek_Fattal) July 23, 2017

This saga’s already been dragging on a lot longer than expected, with several various stops and starts in the rumors from a multitude of sources. So the tendency would be to look at the return of the rumors with a little bit of hesitancy. But then things got even more interesting last night.

If one tweet wasn’t evidence enough, that was followed up by this one coming out of Portland:

It looks like blazers will be part of Knicks 3team trade of Carmelo. No they won't get Carmelo. Stay tuned
— Mike Rice (@mikerice6) July 25, 2017

So connecting the dots together, it’s starting to look some of the things we’ve all been speculating on are going to come to fruition.

The Knicks are realizing they have absolutely no leverage and have figured out it’s best to deal Melo now before they get into the season and formulate a serious rebuild around Kristaps Porzingis. The Portland Trail Blazers have realized that Anthony is never going to waive his no trade clause to head out out to the Pacific Northwest. And Rockets GM Daryl Morey continues to hold all the cards in getting what he wants due to that clause.

When the players have the power -- which is obviously the case here with Carmelo — they are the ones who essentially dictate the front office moves. Anthony wants to go to Houston, and it appears that’s exactly what’s in the works.

So after weeks of rumors, followed by setbacks, it may actually be coming to a close. And while all the individual moving parts of the deal have yet to be disclosed, they likely include Ryan Anderson, Meyers Leonard, draft picks and some other pieces.

Keep your eyes peeled, Houston. It appears that Carmelo Anthony joining James Harden and Chris Paul on the Rockets is closer than ever.

Carmelo Anthony is going to have to back down the Knicks front office to find his way to Houston. | Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

Subterfuge, media leaks or a quality public tantrum may be what it takes for Carmelo to find his way to the Rockets.

Trade talks between the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets for 10-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony stalled out on Friday after Knicks owner James Dolan finally hired a new general manager.

Before the new general manager and stall in negotiations rumors had a three team trade structure built out which included Anthony, Rockets power forward Ryan Anderson and the Portland Trail Blazers.

Since New York announced talks were on hold there's been several differing stories of where trade talks stand:

First we had reports New York wants to try and convince Melo to stay:

Unsatisfied w/ current Melo trade offers, Knicks new regime wants to talk to him about staying.

Quickly followed by reports Melo still wants to be traded to Houston:

Carmelo Anthony still expects the Knicks to resume trade talks with the Rockets, sources told @wojespn. https://t.co/imkZ1sWL6z
— ESPN (@espn) July 16, 2017

And lastly now that Portland believes they will be able to acquire Carmelo:

CJ McCollum's not-so-subtle Instagram post indicates he wants Melo in Portland https://t.co/i8PeJJszaw #Knicks pic.twitter.com/UljSGTLa8e
— ESPN New York (@ESPNNewYork) July 16, 2017

Behind the scenes there's several dynamics working against the deal:

New York's new general manager wants to get value for Melo. He doesn't want to take the job to immediately be a laughing stock or get undermined by a deal negotiated by James Dolan.

Houston doesn't have the assets to work one-on-one with New York. Daryl Morey doesn't want to give up Ariza, Gordon or Capela. He wants to unload Ryan Anderson, at three years and $60 million, but someone has to be willing to take him.

Portland appears to be covering their tracks after getting caught talking trade with the Rockets. Rip City has never come up as a city Carmelo would be willing to waive his no trade clause for, but here they are claiming to be in the running. The assets they have to move are slightly better than Ryan Anderson, but mostly three year deals well over eight figures.

When trade talks appear to have reached their apex the Trail Blazers and Rockets were unable to find a destination to land Meyers Leonard. The main problem being his contract and play are so bad the Knicks didn't want him.

With all this going against the trade there's one surefire way for Carmelo to end up in Houston... Pull a Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabber, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Steve Francis, Vince Carter, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony and force your way out of town.

It's a pretty illustrious list of All-Stars, which includes both Paul and Anthony, and they all forced their way out of a town through sheer displeasure and pouting.

Carmelo has done it once before and it's time to do it again. Force your way out of town, Melo.

Foment discontent now. Make sure New York knows that even after shedding Phil Jackson they're preparing for a full season of discontent. Winter is here, if you may.

In the end the Knicks are not exploring trades for Melo because they want to. Paul George and DeMarcus Cousins each fetched dimes on the dollar for their services and this trade will be no different. They're trading him because his contract is too hefty for a rebuild and because there's little chance a copacetic relationship can be rebuilt.

Carmelo and his team should do what they must to force this trade. They have to be sitting on tomes of information about the New York Knicks persistent dysfunction. Why not leak a few stories to send a message to James Dolan that the stories will keep coming out unless Melo is moved?

Bust out all the pout emojis or even a #OnceAKnick hashtag to anger the team and fans. Hell, say something about how Kristaps Porzingas doesn't have the work ethic to become an All-Star. Rock the boat hard.

The best way for Melo to get to Houston at this point is going to be to force his way here. He controls all the cards because of the ironclad no-trade clause the Knicks gave him. Why not let it get messy?

NBA rumors painted the picture of a Houston-New York-Portland trade stalled because of Meyers Leonard.

Carmelo Anthony's move to the Houston Rockets is stalled and possibly off-the-table after a new general manager showed up in New York and launched a staymelo plot.

Woj and Ramona Shelburne broke the news yesterday evening that trade talks have been put on hold while the Knicks pitch the 10-time All-Star on staying.

This is a blow for Houston, perhaps only a temporary one, but one which would have been avoided if not for Meyers Leonard. This week the Portland center has appeared untradeable and may be the reason Carmelo isn’t in red and yellow yet.

From all the rumors and Tweets we've seen over the last week we've culled together the outline of the heavily hinted trade for Carmelo:

Houston gets: Carmelo Anthony

New York gets: Maurice Harkless, pick(s)

Portland gets: Ryan Anderson

This framework is missing a lot. There's very likely draft picks, role players and potential other considerations included in any final trade for Carmelo, but this is the outline of what has been heavily hinted over the last week.

A big sticking point appears to be New York's unwillingness to take center Meyers Leonard in the deal. The big man is owed $9.9 million next year and $32 million total over the next three years.

Looking at Portland's roster shows there's two sets of contracts you can pair with Harkless, $10.1 million, to get the deal done and keep the outgoing salary right with the incoming money. It's either Leonard or Al-Farouq Aminu, $7.3 million, and Ed Davis, $6.3 million.

Pairing the two of them would save Portland more money, but Leonard is the real financial albatross they want off the roster. At the end of the day Portland doesn't need the trade as badly as Houston, they're not going to play ball if they're not getting rid of a toxic asset at while taking on Anderson's 3 years and $60 million.

Harkless isn't playing up to his contract, but he's a serviceable player with qualities on both ends. Aminu and Davis are not worth their contracts, but in two years they'll both be off the books, unlike Harkless, Leonard and Anderson.

Leonard is the price of Portland playing ball and taking Anderson, without considering draft picks. But New York appears to have balked hard in the past week at taking the $32 million three-year contract of Leonard on a once-promising but recently unusable player: 16.5 mpg, 5.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 38.6% fgpct, 34.7% 3pct.

New York's disinterest in Leonard would mean the three teams need a fourth team to absorb this contract. That’s where the trade appears to have stalled entirely.

A fourth team would need cap space to swallow the deal or be willing to send a player to New York on the level of Leonard. That would necessitate a team that wants Leonard or who has an asset New York would actually want with financials which match. And those pickings are slim.

Houston's attempts to acquire Carmelo are likely not over. Anthony will end up where he wants to end up because of his no trade clause. It's possible that is New York, but it seems more likely he'll chase a ring rather than miss the playoffs on a struggling franchise.

Also there's every possibility the pause button has been hit by New York to try and scrounge better trade options or let pressure build on the Rockets to try and pry free Clint Capela or other Houston assets. Or just for the sake of the new general manager not looking entirely powerless right out of the gate.

However, if this is the end of the deal and Carmelo never lands in Houston, then this may be the biggest and most consequential moment of Meyers Leonard's career. And he didn't even have to step on the court.

So much for that.

Rockets fans, we just got Knicks'd.

The New York Knickerbocker basketball club has been among the league leaders in team dysfunction going on close to two decades now. After months of openly discussing their desire to trade future Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks have changed their mind, according to ESPN.

The Rockets were "on the two-yard line" of a deal less than 24 hours ago, and now this. The buzz around the league has been pretty unanimous that a deal was close. Nene even Instagrammed a photoshop of Melo in a Rockets jersey in a hilarious, probably accidental callback.

So here we are again, where we thought we'd be two weeks ago when we thought what the Knicks front office probably found out for themselves. The Rockets would want Melo, but not if it meant giving up Clint Capela or Eric Gordon. Either one probably takes a deal across the finish line, but neither one would have been worth it.

Where is that? A team that has seriously improved on both ends from last year, one with two Hall of Famers in their prime, a recently signed defensive stopper in P.J. Tucker, a rapidly improving young center in Clint Capela, the reigning sixth man and coach of the year and a stretch four that bends NBA defenses until they break.

Do they have enough firepower to beat the Warriors? Probably not. There's no team in the NBA right now that can say to themselves they are every bit as good as Golden State. But Daryl Morey already has done enough to position the Rockets this year for a deep run, and a shot at something special, 'Melo or not.

The Portland Trail Blazers could be the most likely team to help bring Carmelo to Houston. | Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Anderson could head west to bring Melo to Texas.

Carmelo Anthony appears destined to become a Houston Rocket in a yet-to-be-announced trade between Houston, the New York Knicks and one or two unknown teams.

The 10-time All-Star has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to come to Houston, but any deal is going to be complicated and require at least three teams. Anthony is earning $26 million, and the outgoing salary required to meet NBA rules will necessitate Houston to trade Ryan Anderson, $20 million.

Eric Gordon, Clint Capela and Trevor Ariza could all be used in varying combinations to make the trade happen, but Daryl Morey seems unwilling to move any of these players and dead set on unloading the Rockets starting power forward. Anderson is owed approximately $60 million over the next three years and his contract is commonly viewed as an albatross just a season after being inked.

We asked Dream Shake Twitter followers to send us your best trade machine creations yesterday following Woj’s report of an ongoing search for a fourth team to complete the trade.

Hit the trade machine and send us your four team deals for Memo. We’ll give them a rating.
— The Dream Shake (@DreamShakeSBN) July 12, 2017

More than 50 trade proposal came in from cubicles, classrooms and smoke breaks across the city. And the most common third or fourth team in the proposals we received was the Portland Trail Blazers (yes spellcheck changed Melo to Memo in the Tweet).

And Portland being involved makes lots of sense.

Portland has contracts they want to unload

Portland has the NBA’s second-highest payroll. Yes. Portland is spending more money on players next season than the Golden State Warriors, $39 million over the cap to be exact.

Only the Cavaliers have more money locked up next year. Worse than the pile of committed money is the lack of contribution or utility of several players under contract. Portland should want to unload the following contracts:

Allen Crabbe, 25, SG - $56 million total, $19.3 million next year, three remaining years
Evan Turner, 28, SG - $53 million total, $17.1 million next year, three remaining years
Mo Harkless, 25, SF - $31 million total, $10 million next year, three remaining years
Meyers Leonard, 25, C - $32 million total, $9.9 million next year, three remaining years

First off, many of these assets overlap with roles Portland already has filled. Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum fill both of the guards slots, often pushing Crabbe and Turner to the three and limited the amount of minutes they get on the court. Certainly making their utility disproportionate for the amount they’re paid.

All of these assets make Portland the most capable of matching salary and providing options for the Knicks, or the ability to split salary using Harkless and Leonard.

Portland could use Anderson

Ryan Anderson is paid too much money, but that’s a product of his really, really, really good three-point shooting, which he did at an elite 40.3 percent on 7 attempts a game in last year’s regular season.

This would be an enormous upgrade for Portland’s offense. Leonard is considered a stretch four/five, but he shot much worse than Anderson at 34.7 percent on 2.9 attempts a game last year.

Anderson immediately opens the floor for a Trail Blazers team with an offensive motor that will continue to run through its two outstanding guards. The presence of a healthy Jusuf Nurkic increases the need for the spacing as the big Bosnian will eat as much interior space as he’s given.

Defense is too mainstream. It’s been around for years and the Lillard-McCollum duo has decided it is too maninstream for hipster Portland. So why not add another leaky sink to the collection and adopt the expectation that they’ll outscore opponents.

Conclusion

Portland is a great partner for an Anthony-to-Houston deal because they’ve got several of their own Ryan Andersons already. They have roughly $56 million locked in to players who they don’t make the most of, so moving that salary to another team and taking on a player who at least fits their goals makes sense.
